He is also a bus chaperone for pep club and the debate coach. Mr. G. met with groups of Freshmen this year to discuss their future plans and to help them line out their classes for their remaining years in high school. He gave Sophomores an interest test. This test helped to match up student interest and personality with different fields in the job market. Early in the fall Mr. Gagnepain gave the Juniors a P. S. A. T. test. This enables the Juniors to compare themselves with other high school juniors who plan on attending college. The test also qualified them for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The Seniors this year looked to Mr. Gagnepain for his help and in their search for the right college or university. He tried to meet with each senior and find out what their plans were and do what he could to help them. Mr. G. also does numerous other things throughout the year to aid the students with their problems. Mr. F. J. Gagnepain. Counselor. 10 Mr. Gagnepain scheduling students for next year. At the District meet the team placed second, which qualified them to go to State. At the State Meet in Jefferson City the team placed fourth overall but was number one 2A-school in the state. The medal winners at State were Jim Jennings with a second place, and Greg Reecht who finished in the eighth spot. Jim and Greg were also named to the all-state cross country team. 22 LOSING STREAK IS BROKEN Perhaps the way to describe the highlight of the football season can best be done by Brent Vaughn’s ’’Most Memorable Event of 1981.” My most memorable moment was the Crystal vs. Herky football game. In this game we shed the loser” image. After leading throughout the entire game we dropped behind 21-39. With a little over 2 minutes left in the game we got in the huddle and said This is it.” We drove 80 yards in 3 plays with Pat Linderer taking it in from 3 yards out to win 2501. This is the most memorable moment for me because of what happened after the game. When the clock ran out. the field filled with our” fans! The fans that didn’t believe in us anymore finally knew we could win. You had to be in this situation to know what I mean. Anybody there will tell you that the ”bus scene”afterwards was fantastic. So I would like to thank the fans of our football team this year for my most memorable moment. Overall, the team's record was 3-5. Their wins were over Herculaneum, St. Pius, and DeSoto. In conference they were fourth. Next year the team loses their quarterback, Brent Vaughn, and their receiver, Alan Caldwell. But they have gained the Tri-Captain ! Darryl Jackson. Randy Rhyneer. Brent Vaughn confidence that makes them losers no more. Row One: Pat Kinder, Tim Almany. Brett Eggemeyer. Richie Cook, Robbie Rainwater, Pat Linderer. Dwayne Labruyere. Robbie Bradshaw. The junior varsity basketball team ended their season with a 14-4 record. They had a very successful season. They won the Jefferson County Conference on the junior varsity level. They worked well as a team. Even though they were small in numbers, they were very big on the court and proved this to the teams they played. The outlook for the varsity level looks very good with these girls coming up. Keep 29 up the good work, you're doing well, girls. SECOND IN DISTRICT The Varsity Volleyball Team finished their season with a record of 11-12. They received 4th place in the Meramac Tournament. 3rd in the DeSoto Tournament, and 2nd place in their District. Their season was not one of consistency but one of playing hard and working well together as a team. The girls learned and worked together as a team throughout the entire season, which is a sign of a good team. When the All-Conference Team was picked, the Hornets were represented by junior. Faith Zimmerman and senior. Robin Duren. They were both elected as all around players. The team was managed this year by Kimberly Seabaugh helping her was statistician. Linda Zimmerman. The team also had two traveling linesmen that did a very good job: they were Craig Wilson and Jeff Raines. The 1982 baseball team ended their season with a record of six wins and fifteen losses. Many of the Hornet losses were closer than they appear to bel In the District Tournament, the Hornet team advanced to the semifinals and were defeated by Brentwood. The Hornets are planning to fight a lot harder next yearl 34 TENNIS Kneeling: Jo Ellen Wrighti manager, Kim Seabaugh, Brenda Roesch, Kathy Brown. Chris Pratt. Leslie Oberlatz. Mike Oberlatz. Standing: Roger Biggs. Jeff Raines. Kevin Dallas. Jeff Church. Marty Elbl. Jeff Elbl. Skip Raines. The 1981-82 tennis team performed exquisitely throughout the tennis season. They ended their season with a record of thirteen wins and no losses. Also, they attained the conference title by defeating DeSoto who had been undefeated until challenging the powerful Hornets. Furthermore, the Hornets went on to attain the district championship. In the District Tournament. Jeff Elbl contributed to the Hornet win by his victory in the first two rounds of play. Skip and Jeff Raines won third place in doubles competition and Marty Elbl won his third district singles championship which made him eligible to advance to the 1982 State Playoffs. At the State Tournament. Marty won his first round of play and was defeated in the second round. Congratulations to the tennis team for such a great season!! 36 Above left: Kevin Dallas concentrates on his backhand. Above right: Jeff Elbl is pleased with his performance. THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY This year the Girls Varsity Basketball Team ended their season with a record of 200. They have achieved the titles of Jefferson County Conference Champs. District Champs. Regional Champs, and State quarter finalists. The Girls were defeated by three teams this year: Oakville. Cleveland, and Scott County Central. Due to an ineligible player. Cleveland was forced to forfeit their wins to the Hornets, upping our record. Scott County Central defeated the Hornets by three points in the State Quarterfinals and went on to win the Girls State 2A Championship. Though the girls were defeated and did not make it to State playoffs, they were ranked 2nd behind Scott County Central in the final state coaches' poll. Captain for the team this year was Faith Zimmerman who was assisted by Co-Captain Trina Johnson in leading the team. Leading in the statistics for the team this year was Trina Johnson for rebounding. Kris Pratte for scoring, and Monique Ravellette for steals and assists. This season we had four girls elected to the Jefferson County All-Conference Team. Trina Johnson and Kris Pratte were elected to the First Team, and Faith Zimmerman and Monique Ravellette were elected to the second team. All the girls this year worked very hard and played well as a team. Along with the excellent playing by the team members, the team was managed very successfully by Kathy Bhat. She helped the girls to prepare for the games and did all the necessary preparations concerning equipment, statistics, and scorekeeping. A Trina 1st row: Robin Duren, Trina Johnson. Faith Zimmerman. Senior band participates in many activities during the year. In the fall, marching season occupies the band s time and it marches in all home football games, and in the Homecoming, and Christmas parades. The end of the 1981-82 marching season brought a close to a long era of 19 years when new marching uniforms were ordered and the traditional C. C. H. S. uniforms were worn for the last time. The C. C. H. S. senior band also has a busy concert schedule. It gives a Christmas and a Spring Concert. Crystal also participates in the District Contest both as a band and with soloists with great success. Opportunities such as clinics and all county band selections also add to the quality of the C. C. H. S. senior band. Another year ends with the band playing at the commencement exercises. Officers.- Sitting: Kristi McDaniel. Robin Wilson. Kathy Herbert, Mary Henson. Standing: Linda Lucas. The Concert Choir again overwhelmed the judges at the Worlds of Fun Festival and returned to Crystal City with the Class A Division Championship trophy and also the Sweepstakes trophy. The choir also performed at the Baccalaureate Service and at the Commencement Ceremony. This year their performances were outstanding and enjoyable. 64 Concert Choir Officers: President. The Girls Ensemble this year had one of its finest years ever because of their acceptance to the State Convention at Tan-Tar-A Resort. The Girls Ensemble was chosen as the only girls choir in the state of Missouri to sing for the Missouri Music Educators Association. It was an exciting, if not a fun trip for the girls. It meant a lot of extra work rehearsals, but in the end it was well worth the effort that the girls and Mr. Egbert put into it. Along with singing at the convention, the girls also sang their annual Christmas concert and spring concert. They also sang at Robinhood Restaurant in Pevely for the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association in March. Congratulations Girls on a fine yearl One of the many Girls Ensemble rehearsals. The Pep Club for this year was an organization that got alot of participation. Because of our new principal the pep club really got things going. The organization has a new constitution with a new set of rules, which helped in getting alot of people who were very enthusiastic to join and organize the whole club. At many of the games the pep club sat in a roped off section together and most of the members wore red shirts to indicate that they were part of this club. The club really cheered and were a great help to the cheerleaders. Hopefully this will continue and grow into a larger and better organization in the years to come. First Row: Dana Hampton. During the week of Homecom- ing the Freshmen worked on their float at the home of Courtney Anderson; the theme of their float was YOU ASKED FOR IT YOU GOT IT. Throughout the year small groups of Freshmen met with Mr. Gagnepain to discuss Missouri View. This a program which helps them to better understand the opportunities that are available to them after high school. It also gives them an idea of the high school curriculum they should take to prepare them for the careers they are interested in. At the end of the year each Freshman met individually with Mr. Gagnepain to plan a tenative schedule for their remaining years in high school. J.A.W. During the week of Homecoming the Sophomores worked on their float THE FEW. THE PROUD. THE HORNETS, at the home of Jim Ellison. Their class sponsors this year were Mr. Bowden and Mr. Dodson. This year Mr. Gagnepain gave them an interest test, which helped to match up students’ interests and personalities with different fields in the job market. This test enables the Juniors to compare themselves with other high school Juniors that plan on attending college. This also qualifies them for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Throughout the year the Junior class did many activities to raise money. Some examples of these are car washes, concession stands at the athletic events, and bake sales. The money raised from these activities was used to buy decorations, refreshments, and aid in paying for the band for Prom. The Junior class was aided by their class sponsors. On the clothing scene, knickers began to reappear, designer jeans were at their peak, and the popularity of Izods increased and the Preppie” image became something to cultivate. For entertainment, we solved (or tried to solve) the mind-boggling Rubic's Cube and tested our skill at Pac-Man and other video games. Rick Springfield and Joan Jet and the Black Hearts were among the new musical groups that appeared during this year. Other favorites were Journey. Sammy Hagar. and REO Speedwagon. plus many, many more. Our local pastime was still ‘'cruising ’ Main Street on Friday and Saturday nights. But it was also a year marked by turmoil in the world: we watched helplessly when, in early October. President Anwar Sadat of Egypt was mercilessly gunned down while reviewing a military paradei when a would-be assassin shot down Pope John Paul in Vatican Squarei as the Solidarity Union made a valiant stand for human rights against a communist government in Poland. As the school year ended and the yearbook went to press. British troops fought to retake the Falkland Islands from Argentina and violence erupted in the Middle East as Israeli forces invaded Lebanon ... conflicts that are still unresolved. Other events of the year included the largest snowstorm in nearly a century, some thirty or so inches of the white stuff being dumped on the area. We missed over a week of school due to the weather, and in the spring of 1983 we began a policy of coming to school earlier and leaving later — this to make up for the snow days so that the school year would not have to be extended.
