Mrs. Gruber has been the Business Education teacher here at CCHS since 1961. Before coming to Crystal, Mrs. Gruber worked at a number of jobs. After graduat- ing from Brilliant High School in Brilliant, Alabama, Mrs. Gruber worked as a beautician for a year. Dur- ing World War II Mrs. Gruber served as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy for two years. She was stationed at San Diego and she worked as an aircraft instrument technician. At the age of 27, Mrs. Gruber enrolled in college under the G.l. Bill. She graduated from Arkan- sas State University in 1953. She received her Mas- ter's degree from the University of Missouri, Colum- bia in 1969. Mrs. Gruber has been teaching school ever since college, except for one year as a secretary to the president of a cotton company in Memphis. She taught 9th grade English and typing at Herculanean High School for two years. She then taught at Hillsboro High School for five years. Mrs. Gruber then came to CCHS in 1961. Mrs. Gruber lives in Mapaville with her husband, Bill Gruber. Mrs. Gruber's plans for the future after retiring are to move closer to her son, Bob, his wife Brenda, and their daughter, Ashley Heather. Mrs. Gruber looks forward to seeing her son and his fam- ily more often and enjoying her granddaughter as she grows up. Mrs. Gruber feels there is nothing else she would rather have spent the last 26 years doing than teach- ing. The students at Crystal City High School during the past 19 years have been privileged having Mrs. Pauline Gruber as their teacher. The Crystal City Football team had a 3-7 record overall with a 3-5 conference record. The only ex- citement in the season was provided by a double- overtime win over DeSoto, and a game early in the season against St. Pius in which victory was snatched away from the Lancers, on a 27 yard field goal with nine seconds left to give the Hor- nets the 13-12 victory. Split up and head'em off at the pass! Dive, Red! 31 Varsity Volleyball Row One: Denise Hayes, Nannette Null, Vicke Visnovske, Kim Linderer, Rosie Kinder, Mary Cook, Tina Whaley, Row Two: Coach Cindy Rugraff, Barb Greer, Robin Duren, Carla Pfotenhauer, Kelley Wilson, Missy Bequette, Managers Kim Wilson and Michele Riney The 1979 Volleyball Hornettes had their ups and downs. The team had plenty of tal- ent and were considered a tough team, even though their record didn't show the ability of this fine team. It was the last year for the six seniors: Carla, Barb, Kim, Kelley, Rosie, and Denise, to play together as a team The Team in action 32 Teamwork Where did the ball go? The 1979 Junior Varsity Volleyball Hornettes had a fine season. Like the Varsity team, the J.V. team had an up and down sea- son, but they show promise for a tough Varsity team next year. The |.V. team is made up of seven freshmen and five sophomores. Coach Cindy Rugraff did a fine job in her first year of coaching. 34 The ball passes by the block Kris and Trina play defense Donna takes care of the ball Kelly spikes while Donna and Robin back her up J.V. With only two players returning from the previous team, hailed as the greatest this county has ever seen, the young Hor- nets pulled their belts tight for a lean 8-18 season under coach Rolla Herbert. De- spite the disappointing record. Crystal did not finish last in the Conference with a 3- 5 record and did take third place in the Festus Invitational. They ended the season with a flurry winning 5 out of 8 games and just missing the State AA playoffs by bringing home the 2nd place District plaque. Nothing I don't care! up here! They won first place in the Fox Tournament and kept going strong as they came in second overall in Conference (7-1). The team went on to take first place in their District Regionals, which is the first time in the history of Girls' Basketball at Crystal City that it has been done. They won their sectional battle and went into the Quarterfinals of the State Tournament, which is another first for the Girls' Basketball team at Crystal. Here they were finally defeated in a close game by Scott County Central by only six points. Congratulations on a great season! Thoughts of future plans are on every- one's mind. There is the thought of not seeing each other for years to come. Memories of the past twelve years are continually being recalled by the graduates. These students will long remember graduation night 1980. They will re- member the last minute jitters, the traditional Pomp and Circumstance , and speeches by fellow students. Sandy Greenfield THE YEAR 1980 As we began a new decade with the year 1980, we were confront- ed with many new changes. For Freshmen, it was their first year of high school life; a year to become familiar with their new surroundings. For the Seniors, it was the last year; a year to think about the future, the past, and to say goodbye. For everyone in our school it was a year to think about what is happening in the world-the changes that affect each one of us. World issues became im- portant to us especially when the reinstatement of the draft was dis- cussed. All of us were concerned about our Hostages being held in Iran, the possibility of war, the Olympic boy- cott, the presidential election, the ever-rising price of gas, and infla- tion. Through every crisis and every failure to change the world, life went on at Crystal City High School . . . INTER COLLEGIATE PRESS SHAWNEE MISSION. KANSAS WINNIPEG MANITOBA
