CRYSTAL CITY HIGH SCHOOL CRYSTAL CITY, MO. VOLUME 25 Editor—Janie Love o-Editor—Coke Albano Lay-out Editor—Jo-Ann Greer Copy-Editor—Marilyn Madison DEDICATION The 1976 Crystalite Yearbook has been dedicated to Mrs. Delores Ann Dixon. Mrs. Dixon and her husband, Paul, reside at 403 Tenth Street, Crystal City. Before working here, Mrs. Dixon was employed in the grade school for several years. Later, she became a secretary at the high school Mrs. Dixon has three main interests—Jenny, Sara, and Jamey-her grandchildren. We are all appreciative of the hard work and interest Mrs. Dixon has shown in our school and in the students. EDITOR’S MESSAGE Dear Friends: The past four years at Crystal City High School have been only a small part of my life. Now that I’ve graduated and have received my diploma, I’m no longer and never will again be a high school student. When I was a freshman I never imagined that the years would go by so fast. All that I’ve been through .. . friends, school functions, sports activi- ties, and daily class hours, have all been worth it. I know I’m going to miss the school and all my friends, but the feel- ing of a diploma in your hand is a great feeling. I wouldn’t trade that now for anything. As a word of advice, (I always was know for giving ad- vice, and usually when it wasn’t needed) I hope that every one of the underclassmen will begin now to make the best of their remaining years in high school. Sure, have fun, but don’t be afraid of becoming overeducated because there is al- ways room for more. It is my right to be uncommon, if I can. I seek opportunity—not security. I do not wish to be kept citizen, humbled and dulled by hav- ing the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incen- tive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. 1 will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and un- afraid; to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creations and to face the world boldly and say—“With God’s help, this I have done.” All this is what it means to be an American. Coleman. 77 PUBLICATIONS The 1976 Publications class, under the direction of Rodney Mills, is responsible for producing the school yearbook, The Crystalite, and to publish a monthly school newspaper, The Mirror. The Pub- lications class also functions as a public relation between the school and the com- munity. Members of the Publications class are: Marilyn Madison, Marissa Greenfield, Coke Albano, (asst, yearbook editor), Rhonda Duren, Debby Vessell, Melinda Swingle, Donna Steppleman, (newspaper editor), Karen Gregory, (asst, news- paper editor), Linda LaBrier, Sharon Roesch, Debbie Williams, Janie Love, (yearbook editor), Nancy Hayden, (photographer), Jo-Ann Greer, (lay-out editor), Phil Hess, Greg Ferguson, John Siracusa, and Greg Stites. 78 SENIOR PLAY A play seems so much better when you are acquainted with the people involved. You might even find an idol among these amateur, yet de- lightful actors. The 1976 Senior play was “Here Come the Brides,” under the direction of Mrs. Pat Smith and student director Phil Hess. The cast in- cluded the following: The happenings occur on a sunny summer afternoon. To express the plot briefly, “One young man takes advantage of one rich uncle.” Jimmy Took, a young bachelor, is receiving checks from his rich uncle. These checks sup- port his non-existent bride and himself. Uncle Dan arrives to meet this “bride” and present her with a check. Through crossed wires, three imitation brides appear-two of them—men dressed as women and the other Jimmy’s sweet- heart, Madge. Clark Reber Greg McCreary Linda LaBrier Liz Glasgow Russell Haley Marilyn Madison Don Sweet Coke Albano Karen Loesch Debbie Williams Donna Steppleman Jimmy Took Bill Thompson Aunt Ellen Thompson Madge Burns Uncle Dan Peggy Westfield Mr. Oswald McDaniel Mrs. Duvalle Smythe Bubbles Duvalle Lady Macbeth 82 THE LAND OF OZ 83 The 1976 Junior-Senior Prom, Land of Oz, was the end result of hard work by the Juniors. The hopes of the Ju- nior class were to construct a Prom in honor of the grad- uating Seniors. Freshmen serving food at the Prom depicted charac- ters from Oz. They are pictured below from left to right. Farmer Steve Kozal, Munch kin Sandy Becker, Cowardly Lion Christy Jackson, another munchkin Nancy Perry, Farmhand Steve Dyer Tin Man Sandy Montgomery, Scarecrow Cathy Hagan, and Farmhand Shane Adams. Pictured at the right is Janie Love receiving her crown from Retiring Queen Linda Graham. 84 AND JANIE IS QUEEN . . . The highlight of the 1976 Junior- Senior Prom was the crowning of the queen. Janie Love became queen of the Land of Oz. She was escorted by Tim Blum. Janie was presented with ruby slippers from Oz by Tina Vance, the Good Witch. Other candidates and their escorts in the court were Melinda Swingle and Rick Smock, Liz Glasgow and Eugene Buckner, Tammy Adams and Terry Stewart, and Retiring Queen Linda Graham and Ronnie Rayburn. The annual Honors Day Program was held on Friday, May 21, 1976. Michele Anderson, captur- ing sixteen awards, led a host of honorees. This day is set aside to honor the outstanding students of Crystal City High School. The awards included such things as academic awards, scholar- ships, and athletic awards. Parents and friends were invited to attend. Pictured above (top) are Michele Anderson, Vale dictorian, and Jo-Ann Greer, Salutatorian, re- ceiving their respective awards from Mr. Foushee. Presentation of the Class of 76 was made by Mr. Kenneth Foushec and dip- lomas were received from Mr. James Graham. Michele Anderson, Valedictorian, gave a very inspiring speech on the re- sponsibility of each person to accept learning and education and to pass our knowledge on to others. Jo-Ann Greer, Salutatorian, Spoke on personal and individual goals that each of us should set for ourselves and strive to attain. The completion of our high school years indicates to us all that the world is a big and wonderful place and just waiting for each of us to challenge it. 90 TIME RUNS OUT . . . Putting a yearbook together is quite an experience. Over the years I have shared this experience with some great kids. Since this probably the last CRYSTALITE that I will sponsor, I am taking this space to pay tribute to the 1976 staff. You should know that there would be no yearbook without the hard work and dedication of Jo Ann Greer, Coke Albano, Linda LaBrier, Nancy Hayden, Donna Steppleman, and Janie Love. A special tribute to the Mirror editor, the magnificent Donna Steppleman. GOOD LUCK 76. Nancy says farewell to a friend. 9? CRYSTAL CITY DRIVE-IN BANK TRUMAN BLVD. MOTOR BANK Crystal City, Mo.
