The 1972 Crystalite Crystal City High School Crystal City, Missouri Volume 21 Dedication The Senior Class of 1972 proudly dedicates their yearbook to Mr. Donald Hosutt, who for the past 18 years has helped to teach us about albino corn and frogs, and yet while doing so, taught many sophomores about growing up and life itself. We hope in this small way we can thank Mr. Hosutt for his valuable contribution. 2 Editor’s Message Dear Friends It’s been the year of “Super 72”, regional basketball champs, 2nd place in state stage band contest, first place debaters, and Disneyland. This year was very important to us because it marked the end of high school, and the beginning of something new for all of us. But next year will be as important to ‘73’ as will the next year to ‘74’ and then to ‘75’. Every senior year is as impor- tant to its class as the years before and the years to come. And like this, every year has had its bad points and good ones, and in the future it will be hard to remember all of the good times, and even a few of the bad times that we thought that we could never forget. An anonymous writer once said “Everything has been thought of once, the difficulty is to think of it again.” I hope that this yearbook will help you remember some of the bad times; when you had to run extra laps in P.E., got back late from r?Tn 3 mi!d urcu' 3nd d'dnt qU‘te make an imP°rtant ‘ouchdown. But more! than this I hope it helps to recall all of you?ha d HS; H°meC0ming'the Prom' f,nalIy 8et,in8 your senior ring, and feeling that diploma being placed in On a whole its been a great year. Good luck to ‘73’, ‘74’, and ‘75’; Sincerely, (ACboqjsttb'c Janet Bins, 1972 Editor In Memory of Mrs. Harriet Vineyard Secretary to the Superintendent December 10, 1925 August 1, 1971 Table of Contents Administration and Faculty.....................6 Seniors.......................................18 Juniors.......................................32 Sophomores ...................................36 Freshmen......................................42 Sports .......................................50 Organizations ................................72 Activities....................................92 Advertising .................................108 6 L Top left: Clinton Pope, Superintendent Top right: Edward Rapp, Principal Bottom: Seated around table from left to right: Clinton Pope, Mrs. Florence Bond, Elmo Blum, Richard DeMent, Louie Church, Jack Turk, Mrs. Grace Trautwein, Secretary, and Robert Graham. In this year’s competition, the FHA submitted “What Ever Happened to Baby St. James”, Dramatics Club, “Tora, Tora, Tora, Tigers”, C Club “St. James Day Massacre”, Honor Society “CC and Company”, Library Club “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, COE “The Deadly Game”, and the Pep Club “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’. 52 “Catch 22” was submitted by the Freshman Class, while the Sophomore Class built the winning float, “The Greatest Show on Earth”. The Junior Class came in second place with their tank entitled “Gimme Shelter”, and the Senior Class came in third place with their version of “Mash”. The Pon Pom Girls and the Marching Band also added to the festivities of the parade. 53 u At top: Queen and her court. Below: Queen's dance. Due to multiple injuries of starting players the Hornets season was a disappointment, dropping 3 games by a total of 6 points, the result of inexperienc- ed players competing against seasoned teams. All district fullback Steve Dinolfo was the one bright spot of the season leading the Hornets offense (which was 1 Oth in scoring in the St. Louis area), in scoring and rushing. With the experience that this year’s sopho- mores and juniors gained we hope that next year they bring the JCC Championship back to Crystal City. Hornets Race to Conference And Regional Titles The 1971-72 Hornet Basketball Team had a highly successful season under the guidance of Coach Arvel Popp. Hornet highlights included: first-place in the Festus Tournament, capturing the Jefferson County Conference Title in undefeated fashion, and taking the Class “M” Regional Championship at Ironton, Missouri. The Hornets finished a fine season, posting a record of twenty victories and six defeats. The Hornets were led by 5’-l 1” All-Conference Guard Steve Biehle, who averaged 18.6 points per game, and 6’-3” All-Conference Forward Greg Wolk, who averaged 17 points per game and pulled down an average of 13 rebounds a game. 6’-5” Dave Pilliard hauled in an average of 10 rebounds a game and he along with 5’-9” guard Steve Dinolfo were standouts on the Hornet’s stingy defense. These four seniors will be greatly missed on next year’s squad. Juniors Scott DeMent, Dick Donnell, and Tim Wolk saw much action this past season and will be counted heavily upon next year.
