BOARD of EDUCATION Acting within the framework of state law, it is the duty of the Board of Education to see that schools are operated in the school district. The members of the Board are elected by the people for three year terms and serve without pay. The Board of Education selects the superintendent, and with his help selects the teachers. The Board decides the amount of money to be spent for salaries of teachers and for other school expenses. Individual board members exercise their authority only when the board is actually in session and not individually outside of a meeting. The Board constantly considers the needs of the schools and how to improve them. Much of the continued progress of Crystal’s schools is due to the high type of men who have served on it. E. J. Crystal suffered de- feat only one time being defeated in basketball in the State Tournament. Special honors have gone to Jim Carter and Bill Jennings of the CCHS Basketball Team. This club has two main purposes. One of these is to become more fluent in the use of the Spanish language. Secondly, the members of the club hope to gain a better understanding of the people of the Spanish-speaking countries through the club. Highlights of the year's activities were the Christmas party and caroling, at which time the new members were initiated, and the all-school party in January. PLANNED PROGRESS Sponsored by the Student Council, the above group served as the Planned Progress Committee in the second phase of the Union Electric Community Improvements Project. It is organized to further the students' interest in teaching and to prepare them for teaching responsibilities. Goals of the club are to encourage young people to culti- vate good qualities of personality and character, to acquaint them with the inspiring history of schools and teaching, and to provide them with specific information about opportunities in the field of education. Merit points are awarded to the members for their work on projects which are helpful to the school, community, or which help spread the FTA ideas. Each hour's work on a FTA project earns one merit point. Upon graduation a certificate representing the merit points earned by a member is awarded to him. The FTA movement grew out of the Horace Mann Centennial in 1937 and was established by the NEA assembly. Throughout the year there were several one act plays given in assemblies and for the public. Four regular meetings are held a year. An Oscarette is given to the best actor or actress of the year and presented at the last meeting, which is a banquet. It is equipped to serve 350 people adequately but has served 370 in a forty-five minute period. Three full time cooks are employed. This year they are Mrs. Juanita Bradshaw, Mrs. Edna Papin, and Mrs. Helma Evans. Seven students are given one hour’s work each, during the rush hour from 11:30 to 12:30. Mrs. Maggie Ayers is cashier and helps with the serving tasks. Mr. JesseMyers is maintenance man, Miss Mary Lee Schulte is secretary- treasurer, and Mrs. Golah DeWitt is supervisor.
