Drury, Jr., Vice-President, Mr. H. H. Hanna, President, Mr. David P. Max, Superintendent. BOARD OF EDUCATION Acting within the framework of state law, it is the duty of the Board of Education to see that schools are operated in the school district. The members of the Board are elected by the people for three year terms and serve without PaY- The Board of Education selects the superintendent, and with his help selects the teachers. The Board decides the amount of money to be spent for salaries of teachers and for all other school expenses. The Board may levy a tax rate of 51.00 on the 5100.00 assessed valuation of the property in the district to secure funds to operate the schools. If a higher tax rate is needed, the Board must ask the voters to approve an additional tax rate. The Board constantly considers the needs of the schools and how to improve them. Much of the continued progress of Crystal's schools is due to the high type of men who have served on its Board of Education. 3 Mr. David P. His orchestra, band, and choruses were small at first, but in some four or five years the orchestra and band grew to symphonic proportions and the choruses likewise. The band tries to keep its membership up to seventy and the orchestra to sixty or more. The orchestra and band both have won first ratings for fourteen consecutive years at the Interscholastic Music Contests in the Cape Girardeau district. Though eligible each year for the State Contests at Columbia, Missouri, we have not attended but a few years. In 1946 Crystal City won nine first ratings in the State which included band, orchestra, and chorus along with other solos and ensembles. In the district at Cape Girardeau in 1952, Crystal City won thirteen first ratings. jwirdrd Shelba Sheets, Rita Picarella, , Q Nancy Musgraves, Shirley Smith. IJ l XW1 ' Beverly DeClue, Diana Quiros, -----0 . 1 vr Although Mrs. Howard Edmonds is new at Crystal City High School this year, she has already contributed much to making the year a successful one. One of the main high lights of the year was the Christmas Cantata, On Wings of Christmas Song, given by the Hired 0501135 on December Il. Before coming to Crystal City, Mrs. Edmonds taught choral groups at DeSoto, Festus, and Hillsboro. She is also the Dir- ector of the Sonateers, which is recognized as the best choral group in Jefferson County . She has studied at Missouri University,Wash- ington University, Kansas University, Univer- sity of California, and the University of Colo- rado. This last summer she studied at the Music and Arts University in St. Louis. Mrs. Edmonds, we are very happy to have you with us at Crystal City High School this year and hope you will be with us for many years to come. Hi, Dave, she said, How are you ? Why Kathryn...Kathryn Lednick or should I say Kathy? Do you realize that this is the first time I've seen you, except on magazine covers, since Graduation Day ten years ago. You've done all right for yourself, kid. You haven't done so badly yourself, Dave, but from what I hear all the members of the class of 1953 have done fairly well. Take Mike Albano, for instance, better known as Cowboy Mike. He's making his final appearance this week before he retires as the greatest bronc-buster East of the Mississippi. Mrs. Jerry Decker, the former Margaret Ann Blake, and her husband have just redecorated and reopened their place of business and Chase Club is doing a booming business. Of course, what could you expect with a cigarette girl like Luscious Lila, the former Miss Lila Nelson, working there. I noticed in the New Arrivals column that Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Boyd were just blessed with a bouncing baby boy. That makes an even ten now. By the way, Miss Rose Albano was right there assisting the doctor. She has been a nurse at St. J ohn's Hospital for several years. Here in New York I saw Donna Hardin enrolling for a course at S.C.S., Schmidt Charm School, owned and operated by none other than our own Doris Schmidt. Right next door to Doris's establishment is one of the James Anderson Dance Studios. As I conversed with one of his instructors, Samuel Noce, I found that James is vacationing in Florida with his wife, the former Erline Oberle. Pres. Baker, first woman president, better known to us as Gail, presented a medal for Service Beyond the Call of Duty to Capt. James Doza, U.S.N., who is already famous the world over for his bravery. Thomas Craig, inventor of the new king-sized-king-size mild cigarette--CRAIG'S FAGS is doing all right. Besides all the money he's raking in with his new cigarette. The former Miss Edith Wininger is living in Germany with her husband and eight year old son. Her husband Jake is a Major and is stationed there. Three members of the class of 1953 are now teaching school. George Bequette is teaching history at Notre Dame, Dixie Conardy is teaching basket-weaving HI at William Jewel College, and Donna Taff is an Instructor in a brand new course at M.U. Miss Sharon Gentle's engagement to Louis Otto has just been announced. Louis finally got up enough nerve to ask her. Ace Cardinal pitcher, Dean Linderer, has been seen dating the famous comedian and movie actress Miss Anne Speidel, Stanley Robertson, owner of Robertson's Hooch Factory, and Vincent Marino, president of Alcoholic Anonymous Association are engaged in a few days pheasant hunt in Minnesota. While looking through the entertainment ads section of the paper we couldn't decide whether to go to the Palace Theater to see Miss Ann Charleville, famous comedienneg Miss Jackie Holt, Organist now known as Jacqueline , or Miss Lois Cross, well known concert violinist. Ellis and Robert Havard have purchased a strip of land near the golf course and have opened up a parking lot. They are doing quite well with their new business. 39 CLASS PROPHECY fcon'tj Ellis and Robert Havard have purchased a strip of land near the golf course and have opened up a parking lot. They are 'doing quite well with their new business. Miss Rita Picarella, star basketball player for the world champion girls team--THE BASKETETTES--has just returned home from a world wide tour with the team and their coach Kenneth Laburay. In Chicago Dan Richardson, big business man, is entering Wright's gym. Harold Wright started out as a muscle building instructor and now has a gym of his own. Tin-ee former members of the class of 53 have become well known in the sports world-- Mr. Rolla Herbert is playing basketball for the Boston Hurricanes, and Tony Robino, now known as Tony The Terror, is heavy weight boxing champion, and Eugene Buckner is now a hard hitting tackle for the Los Angeles Goats. Miss Audrey Carter has been engaged in selling used cars for the past several years. She deals mostly in Nashs, but quite frequently in Mercurys also. Raymond Roubidoux, now has a business of his own. He is manufacturing No-Nod Stay Awake Pills. Bill Palmer is also in business for himself--he prints absentee slips for schools. Miss Gail Drury, authoress of Gone With the Amber is now visiting her home tovm of Crystal City and is going to be at Festus Book Store to personally autograph her books. Lorene Dunker, of MGM is playing opposite Tom Fallert, The Great Lover in THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. This picture is destined to be on the IO Best list of 1963. Mrs, Quincy Guidicy, the former Letitia Henderson, is co-owner of the Guidicy Limestone Quarry. 6 Two of the former members of the class of 1953 are now singing for The Horneteers. Thes are none other than our own Mercedes Gerber and Shirley Smith. Mercedes sings when Shirley's got a date with Billy Dean. There are rumors that Shirley and Bill will be married sometime in the near future. Tom Hewitt and Paul Holdinghausen are both driving stock cars now. They are very skillful in this art as they have been practicing for a great number of years. Senator Gladys Krodinger and her rival for her office, Robert Huskey, have been seen quite frequently together lately. Mrs, Everett Potter, the former Jeannette Gendron, just walked into The Hess Bros. Dept. Store where Glenda Phillips is now manager. Mrs. Potter is going to buy a gift for Roseanne Weidenbenner who is to be married next week to James Rhoden, very prosperous farmer. We were all very happy to hear that Mr. Richard Portell has finally reached the top-- Head Delivery Boy for Pagano's Market. John Wininger owns The Ostrich Club, a night club here in New York and Thelma Noll is singing for the band there. Don Neposchlon has really hit the jack pot--He has invented a spaghetti with a famous first imprinted on each noodle. Gee, Dave, I guess that takes care of every one in our class and here comes my date. It sure has been interesting talking to you again. Bye, Kathryn, be seeing you around town. 40 ACTIVITIES x L Hu EEN! , 'Q Wafiona! .Honor .gzciefy Officers President: Gail Baker Vice-President: Ann Speidel Secretary: Carolyn Terry I N L. 1, , 1 Treasurer: Bill Jennings Sponsor: Mr. Berry The National Honor Society of Secondary Schools Charter was issued to the Crystal City Chapter on April 15, 1949, by the National Council. During the sophomore year one is eligible for probation. If one's qualifications continue to meet the requirements he becomes eligible for permanent membership. The Honor Society is under the supervision of an advisory committee composed of the following faculty members: Mr. Berry, chair- man, Miss Holdinghaus, Miss Reinbold, Mrs. Hamrick, Mr. Pogue, Mr. Rapp, and Mr. Christy. Richard Berry .gzwlenf Counci The Student Council was a very successful organization this year under the leadership of Tom Fallert, who was elected by the student body as president. The organization, being new this year in Crystal City High School, has several objectives which have been quite successfully accomplished. Among these objectives are: to stimulate participation in extra-curricular affairsg to develop student responsibility, initiative, leadership, and school prideg and to promote the welfare of school through proper student faculty relation- ships. The over -all objective, which has been an asset to the school, is the working model of government brought about by a well organized constitution. Los Locos, the Spanish Club of the Crystal City High School, was formed early in the year by the students of the Spanish II class for two main purposes. First of all, the club was formed to bring about an informal situation for the use of Span- ish. This informal atmosphere is found in the evening meetings of the club. The Club hopes to improve its use of spoken Spanish in this manner. Second, the club members hope to better understand the people of the Spanish-speaking countries through the activities of the Club. Ideas of the culture and history of each of these countries may be brought out more effectively in the club. Highlighting the year was the Christmas party and the caroling by the club members in Spanish. Q-.-4 Standing--Ann Charleville, J ay Rosenthal, Margaret Blake. 5 2 Q A ,X j t I S Q. It was a delightful serious-comedy displaying the trials, troubles, and joys of the life of a Methodist minister. The play opened when Reverand William Spence's family moved into the old broken down parsonage in an unfamiliar town. Immediately upon their arrival, the parsonage was filled with curiosity seekers and trouble makers. It wasn't long before sweet Mrs. Spence had turned the old dusty house into a cheerful home, and the Reverand was deep in his work. Despite the troubles that come with a minister's work, the family grew to love their new home. The play ended in a mood of deep reverence and good cheer. Truly One Foot In Heaven proved to be a successful production for the class of '53. 49 LATE COMERS Three girls who joined our student body late this year are Jane Dashen, a junior from Douglas, Arizona, Esther Schrader, a sophomore from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Pat Hodge, a freshman from St. Louis, Missouri. The Leaders were Bess Hughes, Matilda Forgey, and Ethel Holdinghaus. The first Brownie Troop was organized in 1929 with Miss Estella Bailey and Mrs. Oakes. Within a few years, Mrs. Kemp resigned and Mrs. Dixon took her place on the Committee. Today there are 2 Senior, 4 Intermediate, and 3 Brownie Troops. Each of the troops has two or more leaders and a Troop Committee of three to five members . Each troop plans and carries out its own program. However, common interests and traditions have been maintained through a Leaders' Club and a Central Committee. Perhaps one of the strongest bonds of unity is a common meeting place, the Scouts very own Little House , located back of Mississippi Avenue near the football field. In May of 1931, the Girl Scouts put on display a model of their Dream House as part of Better Homes Week featured at the P. T. A. meeting. Not long after this, Mrs. Oakes inquired of her husband what was going to be done with a building which had been used during some reconstruction work at the plant. Learning that it was going to be torn down, Mrs. Oakes said, Why not let the Girl Scouts have it for their Little House and so it was that this conversation resulted in an ar- rangement with the General Office of the P.P.G. Co. and work was soon begun. Many individuals and organizations became interested in the project and had a part in the construction and equip- ment of the House. In October of 1932, during Girl Scout Week, the Little House 'was dedicated and the first fire built in the fireplace with an impressive ceremony. It is of interest that the siding of the building is from Belgium. It was material used in crating the glass shipped from Belgium to the local plant. After several years of dreaming and planning, a Girl Scout Association has been organized. It includes all the adults, men and women, connected with the Crystal City Girl Scout Program. When Girl Scouts enter High School they carry on the Senior Scout Program. They continue to take an active part in the program planned for the local organization including Girl Scout Week and the Festival of Giving. Their own program includes a variety of projects. Each sum- mer they sponsor the Day Camp for the Brownies and always go caroling on Christmas Eve. Since service is an important part of the Girl Scout Program, the Senior Scouts haye carried on a number of interesting service projects. During World War II they knitted scarfs and sweat- ers under the supervision of Mrs. R. J. Parkins, and made khaki bags under the leadership ci Mrs. Ed Holt. When the age limit was lowered, they met at the hospital building and made bandages under the direction of Mrs. Joe Banes, Mrs. J. M. Hagan, and Mrs. Doan Noce. Since that period, they have participated in the World Friendship Projects proposed by the National Girl Scout Organization. They have sent Friendship Bags, Layettes, and School bags to various European countries. Senior Scouts were responsible for the Float, with depected old-fashioned Carolers. Their service project is connected with the Veterans Hospitals in Missouri, and is being carried on in cooperation with the local War Mothers Organization. At present there are two senior troops including the following girls and leaders: Gwen Auzat Leta Gibbs Nancy Musgraves Sandra Shoults Margaret Ann Blake Nancy Graham Carol .Toe Mussler Carla Spain Carol Brasket Martha James Carol Noce Sue Ellen Stewart Kay Commerford Pat Large Janice Perry Mrs, Robert Ayers Shirley Crowe Nancy LaRose Gail Resinger Mrs. Leo Resinger Betty DeBasio Kathryn Lednick Martha Rutledge .Tanet Lednick Harriett Drury Ann McCutchen Ieamile Sheets Ethel Holdinghaus 6-I Crystal City School Cafeteria The Crystal City Cafeteria is located on the grade school grounds in the same building with the high school gymnasium. It is equipped to serve 350 people adequately but has served 370 in a forty-five minute period. Three full time cooks are employed. This year they are Mrs. Juanita Bradshaw, Mrs. Edna Papin, and Mrs. Helma Evans. Seven students are given one hour's work each, during the rush hour from 11:30 to 12:30. Mrs. Maggie Ayers is cashier and helps with serving tasks. Mr. Jesse Myers is maintenance man, Miss Mary Lee Schulte is secretary-treasurer, and Mrs. Golah DeWitt is supervisor. The lunch room has been in operation for five years, having started in the spring of 1948. It operates according to government regulations for such programs, receiving a small allowance in proportion to the number of meals served. Commodities are receive and these foods are worked into the menus to make it possible to give a more nutritious meal to the student at the low cost of twenty-five cents per meal. I , a 4.
