Despite these variations, Americans knew well the values that have made our country great. The threat of AIDS (Ac¬ quired Immune Deficiency Syn¬ drome) has touched many lives. The fatal disease is no longer restricted to the males of our society. More than 1870 women now carry the virus. By 1988 experts predict that the total number of AIDS carriers will reach nearly 150,000 peo¬ ple. The America’s Cup may well be the most prestigious trophy in all of sporting. Busi¬ nessmen and large corpora¬ tions spend millions of dollars supporting sailors to bring home the silver pitcher current¬ ly worth a mere $700. San Diego Skipper Dennis Conner recaptured the cup with a vic¬ tory over Kookaburra, aveng¬ ing the 132-year winning streak that the Aussie broke in 1983.
