Last minute orders are given; relief is only minutes away. Sweat, exhaus¬ tion and dirty practice jerseys follow ominous click¬ ing of spikes into the Barn . Relieved sighs of the day’s training are drowned out by the splattering of showers against the hard cement floor, and throughout the vacant building is heard the closing of lockers as the Bulldogs of CPHS call it a day. The Bulldogs of CPHS were on their way. To what? The next several encounters proved disastrous, as the GRIDDERS fell victim to the remainder of their opponents, with the exception of Lake Central which resulted in a scoreless tie. Changes told the story, and at one time, the gridders slumped into a 16 quarter scoreless streak. Strong defense prevailed as the Bulldogs often held their opponents to a limited number of points, failing, how¬ ever, to capitalize on numerous errors by the opposi¬ tion. English With great imaginations, students got down to the brain-racking job of writing compositions in English classes. Minds pondered, pencils scratched away, and interesting thoughts found their way onto paper. Liter¬ ature books managed to inch their way open to Milton, Chaucer, and Wordsworth. Shakespeare and other famous poets were also freed from the annals of literature and entered the minds of inquisitive students. The Song of Roland, The Dialogues of Plato, and Faust were just a few of the epics read in world liter¬ ature classes in their second year at CPHS. Students were taught the philosophy of great poets and the con¬ cepts of the founding of European countries. Across the hall, grammar students were intent on identifying infinitives or picking out participles. Rules concerning the use of commas, colons, and dashes still provoked seniors in addition to underclassmen. These principles were put into operation when bibliog¬ raphies and footnotes confronted those who tackled term papers at the end of the year. Foreign Lang uage Foreign language courses offered chances for students to become proficient in the language 6f their choice. Speaking the language as well as learning grammar was the new approach taught to beginning Latin students. Advanced students read the works of Cicero, while the Latin Banquet and a trip to see the movie “Ben Hur” highlighted the year for all. Beginning French students presented oral dialogues, while advanced classes studied the geography and economy of France. Classes often had the opportunity to sing or learn a poem. In all levels of Spanish, oral work was stressed. Dia¬ logues and basic pattern drills demanded a complete under¬ standing of the language from beginning students. Adv- vanced students worked to perfect their skills while they expanded their knowledge by studying the literature, geography, history and art of Spain. 7th hour French class. Formulas, circles and special angles had to be fully understood. Puzzled looks, raised hands, and students diligently laboring over a proof of theorem constituted the common class¬ room scene. The more meticulous study of advanced algebra proved to be the application of previously learned knowledge. Binomials and quadratics posed problems for the third year student who was kept con¬ stantly busy with pop quizzes, the famous element of surprise. Seniors were faced with the last level of high school math, tackling the many challenges of ana¬ lytical geometry, trigonometry, and advanced studies of sequences and series in senior math. And if one listens carefully, chances are you would have been able to hear “Pythagorean what?” echoing somewhere down the hall. Lester Easto, Cheryl Trueblood 109 Science Dissecting frogs, worms, and crayfish proved challenging for sophomore biology classes. Students became acquainted with correct lab techniques for using microscopes and developing bacteria cultures. Numerous films dealing with everything from the role of DNA in genetics to Dar¬ win’s theory of evolution were shown throughout the year. Elements, compounds, and mixtures were terms used by chemistry students in performing and writing up exper¬ iments. Instructions on weighing solids and computing metric measurements filled the young chemists’ thoughts. Members of physics classes spent most of their time work¬ ing on various problems and performing lab work. Students dealt with power, light, sound, and electricity. Economics classes, along with history classes, attended the Legislature in Indianapolis and toured political offices. Seniors focused their studies on human behavior and re¬ ligions throughout the world in Sociology and Psychology. One field studied in depth by the seniors was conditioned reflexes. World Geography classes studied varying climates, coun¬ tries and land surfaces of the world. At the completion of the course the foreign exchange student, Warner ten Kate, showed films and lectured about the Netherlands. 1st hour Sociology class. MR. Music Many hours of practice and all around hard work contrib¬ uted to the success of the Crown Point Band in marching and concert performances. In the summer of 1968, the Bulldogs received second place in the National Cherry Festival and went on to win top honors in the Chicagoland Music Festival. The symphonic band performed in the Fall and Christmas concerts, in addition to participating in the NISBOVA State Concert Band Contest. The stage band competed in a number of contests and performed in the Guest Artist concert with Clark Terry. For the first time a Music Theory class was offered. Students studied the basic theories of music in addition to composing their own arrangements and learning to harmonize a melody. Another music class. Folk Singing, offered an unconventional approach to music by allowing students to discuss contemporary music informally. CPHS hosted a number of choral groups. A Cappella joined with the band in presenting the Fall and Christ¬ mas concerts and also sponsored the Spring Concert. Swing Choir and Madrigals, both consisting of A Cappella members, added variation to performances. Nancy Baily, Sharon McEntire 2nd hour A Cappella John Forsythe, Jim Duncan Hi MR. Art, Business Mastering speed as well as accuracy was a goal for stu¬ dents in typing classes. Manuscripts, term papers, and typing designs for Christmas were only part of the year’s accomplishments. Keeping a systematic record of business transactions was taught in bookkeeping classes. Many machines for every dealing were also studied. Creative talent went into the art of painting. “What is still life painting?” and “How do you put up an easel?” were the satisfactorily answered questions of puzzled students at the beginning of the year. Painting and drawing, basket weaving, pottery making and learning art appreciation were undertaken, while the distinction between the different painting styles of famous artists was also studied. The art classes pro¬ vided creative drawings in display showcases throughout the school, and many students gained recognition in area art shows and exhibitions. Many hours were spent with the beginner to acquaint him with the mechanical monster. For the first time in CPHS driver education history, a truck was added to driving experiences in addition to the regular passenger cars used by the department. Agriculture was one of the many vocational classes offer¬ ed. Through active participation, students learned about parliamentary procedure for meetings, cooperative buying and selling, livestock selection, crop and land management, conservation, livestock and crop production, and other activities related to agriculture. Home Ec, Shop Refinishing furniture and studying styles of furniture was a main interest of housing classes in addition to traveling to Chicago to tour the Merchandise Mart and Marina Towers. A style show in May provided the sewing classes with an opportunity to show their outfits made during the year in class and as home projects. Modern living, in co-operation with the girls’ family living class, was opened to boys this year. Great concentration and precision were involved in drafting. Many of the students enrolled in indus¬ trial arts were offered an opportunity to explore the many facets of industry. 120 Kathy Parker MR. Among the many phases of the program were track, basket¬ ball, gymnastics, tennis, and dancing. Girls found gymnastics to be trying and challenging. The balance beam, trampoline, and uneven bars called for great coordination. Dancing was required of both boys and girls. Rhythm and exact timing were necessary throughout the dances. After students finished two years of P.E., juniors and seniors were eligible to participate as student instruc¬ tors. Qualified students were awarded the President’s Physical Fitness Award. Health classes were also conducted which enabled the students to study the functions of the body. Janet Ross, Miss Patterson MR. Also located in the main office were the secretaries. Mrs. Vivian Spencer acted as the school bookkeeper and treasurer, while Mrs. Marie Olson served as executive secretary and records clerk. Maintaining discipline was only one of the jobs of the administration. Mr. Roger Childress had the overall responsiblity for the entire school program, and Mr. Georgas sponsored Student Council, handled locker problems and directed summer school. Preparation of the school budget and employment of staff members were taken care of by Mr. Robert Brannock and his administrative assistant, Mr. Ray Rogers. Working directly with the students was the nurse administering first aid in case of sud¬ den illness or accident, and the speech and hearing therapist correcting defects in students’ speech. Daily routines included managing the buying and selling of books and supplies in the bookstore, keeping the library quiet in addition to signing out books, and supplying audio-visual equipment to aid the teachers. The at¬ tendance directors called home when pupils were sick, and took charge of preparing absent and tardy slips. Other staffs worked for the students by keeping the school and its grounds in top shape and serving daily lunches during noon hours. Mrs. Rita McFadden, nurse.
