Band, choral concerts obtain appreciation of school, community patrons Developing the comprehensive stu¬ dent was the aim of the music depart¬ ment. Appreciation was stressed through careful selection of material and techniques used in presentation. A rigorous summer schedule aug¬ mented the band’s school year activi¬ ties. Winter brought concentrated ef¬ fort in concert entertainment as the band prepared for concerts, assem¬ blies and the NISBOVA contests. The vocal department grew through the development of several specialized groups. The folk singing group, “The Live and in Color,” performed for community civic groups. The A Cap- pella presented its first Guest Artist Concert in the spring. Art enthusiasts apply imagination; business teaches fundamenta ls of office work Due to the increased number of student artists and their ability to flexibly work with various mediums, the project of hosting the first art show was successfully undertaken. Projects about the elements of composition, Oriental and Renais¬ sance art were emphasized. Bookkeeping classes put the stu¬ dent in the position of a bookkeeper of a small firm, where he was asked to take care of the books as if the situation were authentic. Timed writings and typing to music kept typing students on their toes, while shorthand students learned the Gregg Theory. Commercial law and salesmanship classes chose products and sold them to the class. Above: Advanced art student Karen Pirtle, mixes chalk to get the desired colors for her art as¬ signment. Right: After reading instructions carefully, beginning typist Kelly Teamey types a business letter. Basketweaving, an age old art, is a new unit in art classes.
