Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1948 volume:

Along with Spring come the last days of chool and, with it the sudden realization for eniors, that their lives as high school students [re nearing an end. As the long-awaited day of graduation approaches, memories well up from i le experiences of the past years and we find our seniors turning back for — The Last Qlimpse The 1948 Excalibur Crown Point High School Crown Point , Indiana Page 3 Last Qlimpse of . . . Qood ' bye Mr. Eve and Mr. Erwin The problems of Mr. Eve and Mr. Erwin are manifold, but no matter how busy, they are seldom too occupied with their duties to see a student desiring access to their offices. These two men combine a vast store of knowledge along with good common sense to settle the many aca¬ demic and social problems which arise in the course of a school year. They respond with as equal readiness to student plans for a class trip as to a G. I. ' s need for guidance in finishing his high school requirements. Because of their ever willingness to extend a help¬ ing hand, there are no two school officials better loved by the student body of any school. (1. to r.) Lowell C. Held, Treasurer, Julius J. Griesel, Secretary; Walter A. McLean, President; Trustees To this group we can well attribute the progressiveness of our school. Through the fore¬ sight, careful planning of these men, and their genuine interest in the welfare of the future citi¬ zens of Crown Point we can be proud to call Crown Point High School our Alma Mater. Lee E. Eve, Superintendent. Miss Blackstone and Mary Ellen Kretschmar. Office Staff These industrious women ar® the backbone of our school of¬ fice. A glance at the always ac¬ curate files, the well-kept desks, and the personages behind them, shows that our school of¬ fice shines with efficiency. Page 18 A Last Qlimpse Of C.P.H.S. Citizens Many are the memories of our school city - - its halls, ,its teachers, its students. Remember the noise as you went downstairs to shop?-The clatter of the typing room? . . . The trips to the assemblies or to the art class? . . . The plans of athletic strategy explained to the non-play¬ ing students as well as the varsity? Not to be forgotten, let us refresh our memories with a free torn- down the traditional Olde School Hall ... It is homeroom period now so let us pause to look in through the portholes and identify familiar faces. S P Page 19 MR. Armed with equipment suitable for attack on the school menu , the Class of ' 48 en¬ tered C. P. High rarin ' to go, way back in the good ol ' days of 1944. Quickly subdued by Yesterday ' s Seniors , the ' 48er ' s got into the spirit of festivities by initiating the Frosh Hop, a hugh success. Several returning war vets joined the class in its Sophomore year, adding their know¬ ledge of the world to their already aging classmates. The ordering of the ' 48 sweaters and rings was the big issue in that year. In their third year the Junior Play and the Junior-Senior Prom shared the top events. These activities were financed by management of various athletic events, especially the Holi¬ day Tourney. In the last round of their school life they made good use of their dwindling time with the Little Five Hop, the Senior Play, and the annual Holiday Tourney. With a few gray hairs, they emerged triumphantly on Graduation Day fully equipped with the requirements neces¬ sary to contribute their best to their country and their fellow citizens. Co-sponsored by Mrs. King and Miss Rickenbaugh during the first semester, the S.S.S. distributed fourteen Thanks¬ giving baskets to needy families in the com¬ munity. At Christmas time the society collected books and games which they distributed at the Detention Home. On January 10th the Society held a dance with the Hi-Y featuring Bud Isley ' s orchestra. The S.S.S. held its initiation for the first time at an assembly. This ceremony was very impressive and served to illustrate the S.S.S. ideals and goals. Upon Mrs. King ' s resignation from the staff, Miss Rickenbaugh competently assumed full sponsorship of the Sunshine Club, and watched the Society complete their first 1948 project: mailing Easter Seals for the Easter Seal Com¬ mittee of our community. Events such as the Rose Dance and the May Breakfast completed the Year ' s activities. Crown Point High School has been, is, and always will be proud of such an organiza¬ tion for the girls as the Sunshine Society. (Front row) C. Stiener, B. Bosel, J. Vance, P. Laney, R. Sylvie, V. This chorus has become an outstanding representative function of our fine school. Under Mrs. Thomas ' s leadership, it has risen to very high levels. This has been proved in two annual concerts, the Christmas Concert on December 14th and the Spring Concert on May 7th, which were generously praised by the townspeople. This department has four other groups which contributed greatly to its achievements: the A Cap- pella was lauded at various convocations, at their March 5th concert, and at the concert presented at Griffith High School Assembly: the A Cappellettes and Boy ' s Ensemble demonstrated the contrasting qualities of male and female voices; and the Triple Trio demonstrated their musidal ability in perform¬ ing before various Women ' s clubs and other meetings in addition to singing for assemblies, convoca¬ tions, and concerts. Another important part of our music department is the Band. Although it it his first year at C.P.H.S. Mr. Ewing has successfully directed two concerts: the Winter Concert on December 16th and a Spring Concert on April 2nd. The Band also participated in the state solo and ensemble contest at Valparaiso on February 21st. and the State Band Contest at South Bend on April 17th. The Band deserves a great deal of credit for helping in developing school spirit by playing at the home basketball and football games. This year for the first time the band elected officers. Those elected were: Don Larson, President; Bill Frederick, Vice-President, and Sue Claussen, Secretary and Treasurer. Page 61 H ■ Percussion (Back row) J. Larson, B. Wessman, E. Armitage. Stuhlmacher; (seated) V. Fcgen, M. Eisenhutt, D. Eisenhutt, The girls of the Girls ' Athletic Association participate in two classifications of active sports - Major and Minor. The major sports are. -soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and track; while the minor sports are tennis, swimming, hiking, bicycling, riding and many others. By participating in these sports and earning the proper amount of points a girl may attain her three awards: the shield, the minor letter, and the major letter. Each year the club selects two girls as outstanding members. The qualifications for this honor are ability, good sportsmanship, leadership, and dependability. The outstanding mem¬ bers of 1947 were Betty Lowe and Dolores Eisenhutt. To complete the year the girls sponsor the one main event of the year, the G.A.A. Car¬ nival, which features everything from minuets to mass drills. Page 70 Football Captains and Coach: Coach Carnahan, J. Bullock, D. Steuer. Our Football Season This year under the direction of Carl Carnahan, Crown Point enjoyed the first winning season for three years, winning seven games while losing only three. On August 15, sixty-five football prospects reported for practice with fifty-seven of this number competing on the varsity and reserve team. Coach Carnahan molded a twenty-two man varsity squad and schooled them in the fundamentals of blocking and tackling which were important factors in our suc¬ cessful season. Coach Ruby coached the reserve squad to s ' x wins, cne defeat, and one tie. For these splendid achievements, we the class of ' 43 say thanks ' ' C. P. OPP. Thus, under Mr. Ruby ' s able leadership the boys of C. P. H. S. learned that success on a team ties in directly with personal achievement in the line of character building.
