Gentleman's Quarterly still soars above all other trend magazines. The 1986-87 school year was a big year for Crowley Fashion. With the in- creased enrollment came a big up- swing in the number and variety of students who really cared about how they looked. As it became harder to label people into set groups or categories, these 'igroupsw became even more extreme. Preppy girls chose to hide their con- ventional haircuts with massive bows - often glorified bandanas, emblazoned with rhinestones and silver clasps -to achieve new heights in Preppydom. Last year's new wavers became this year's punks. They were surprisingly daring in their quest for an alternative lifestyle. Ropers struggled to become more noticeable. Their sense of style includ- ed not only cowboy hats and boots, but dusters, spurs, and huge rodeo belt buckles. Generra, Outback, Red, Forenza, Guess?, Sperry, and Vuarnet, which were all relatively new clothing labels, enjoyed increased popularity as well as a huge following: Coca.Cola clothing, Swatch Paraphernalia, Paisley prints, and Corona Beachwear all led quickly after school began in the fall. Ms. Kay Newberry has directed eleven plays at Crowley High School, and she has made them plays that we can all be proud of. This talented lady has been acting since grade school and she feels it's an art she has been dedicated to FOREVER This has been obvious to all through her power- ful direction on stage and her acting ability outside of school. Of course Ms. Newberry couldn't direct without hardworking and devoted cast members. She felt she had that type of person in her last play, Bad Seed, and she was very excited by the group result. l'm certain everyone agrees that we owe this success to a woman who has taught and directed at Crowley for 5 years and acted in 40 plays on her own, Ms. Kay Newberry. They are able to keep the spirit flowing in pep rallies that could be mistaken for a morgue, but by the end of the pep rallies, the cheerleaders have the Crowley spirit pushing the tip of the scale. Their busy summer schedule consisted of spend- ing a week at cheerleader camps at San Marcos in Texas for the Varsity squad and at Texas Christian Universi- ty in Fort Worth for the Junior Varsity squad. The cheerleaders help pro- mote Crowley spirit throughout the school by creating booster posters, decorating halls and lockers, appear- ing in parades and, of course, in Crowley High School pep rallies. The ranks of the cheerleading squadscon- sist for the Varsity twelve and for the Junior Varsity seven. The varsity cheerleaders consist of from left to right S. Bruton, D. Anderson, C. Haynie, S. This year the Eagles entered the State Tournament for the first time in Crowley history. Crowley ended their season plac- ing second in District behind Cleburne, who went to state finals losing to Hillcrest for the 4-A Championship. In their first playoff game, Crowley nipped Northside 78 to 76 in a very emotional game. The fans ran out on the court after the game to support the team. Crowley's se- cond game was against Wichita Falls, Hirsci, losing to them 96 to 72 ending their great season. The Eagles were an exciting team to watch in the 87 season. They won 20 games and lost only 10. The fans enjoyed watching this first class team as they followed them everywhere. Lance Cook, Junior, found that the first playoff game against Northside was the most exciting because of the fans - they ran out on the court after the game. The fans helped us play better. The best game played, according to Lance, had to be the Northside game. We were told we were going to have to play our best and we did. Next year Lance hopes for playoffs again. Our Varsity Basketball Girls have done it again. The season was off to a great start. The varsity team practiced long, hard hours. Their games were filled with concentration and intensity, despite the roar of the crowd. But the team wasn't always hard at workg this close-knit group of friends - almost a family - knew how to relax and have fun. From the outside, anyone could see how they felt about themselves and about each other. It was this unity that turned their talents into victoriesg thus making the 1986-87 basketball season the most fun they've ever had. As everyone knew, the Mighty Eagle Band worked very hard during marching season to bring high honors to Crowley High School. Not only did the band support the football team at every game, but they also competed in many marching competitions in which they won several honors, in- cluding District Co-Champs, Region Champs, and seventh in state mar- ching competition. But the band didn't quit when football season was over. Several band students attended the solofensemble competition held at Richland Hills where there were many high placements, including several first division ratings. The directors, who are Mr. Ed Martinez, Mr. John Martinez fMr. Mari, Mr. Weyland Rapp, and Miss Davis, held high ex- pectations for both bands. Those ex- pectations were met on April 1 1 when both bands received top honors at concert contest. They received one's in concert and in sightreading. That made the Mighty Eagle Band a Sweepstakes band - the only one in the region. The Crowley Symphonic Band, with the help of directors Mr. Ed Martinez and Mr. John Mar- tinez, bring the unspoken words of their musical poetry to life. 74 Academics Q Left Exit Stage ,, -'-X '.:L iff' . . A strong, hard beat, a jazzy feel, and a great ability to relax and get into it are just a few of the many characteristics of these jazz bands. Miss Denise Davis, director of both stage bands, provides the members with an excellent learning opportunity. The learning stage band offers not only an op- portunity to get the feel of jazz, but also the experience needed to perform. The importance of leaf and insect collections in Biology was overwhelming, but didn't even compare with the dissection techniques that were learned by working on cats, frogs, crayfish, and worms. The physical science students learned the periodic table of elements and the chemistry students studied the basics of organic chemical pro- cesses. Lastly, physics classes studied the essentials of energy and motion. The best thing of all about science classes are the labs where you learn many things about the insects, animals and chemicals that ,V you studied about in class. 90 Academics my st 4lssusQ.S 1'-iff i , W, Climbing on the lab table for a closer look, Author Price watches as Kelly Witt performs an important experiment. How could life as we know it exist without the delicate art of creation found in these subjects? Many people believe that classes such as shop and drafting do not provide a practical use for knowledge. Contrary to this belief, it takes a lot of in- telligence to even keep up in such a class. These subjects take not only knowledge, but coordination, perseverance, and hard work as well. There were many times when she wanted to give up, but a good' grade on an impossible assign- ment or a hard laugh with friends gave her the energy to continue. Jennifer has attended Crowley schools since the second grade. She spent anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours on homework. Homework became more intense dur- ing high school and sometimes she spent four or five hours on one assign- ment. She found that Honors World History during her Junior year was the most challenging and the most enjoyable. Jennifer also participated in extra- curricular activities. She played the oboe in band for four years. For three years, she was on the Flag Corps. She was in Spanish Club and Youth For Christ all during her high school years and was in National Honor Society her Junior and Senior years. Jennifer plans to attend Texas A8aM. She received two scholarships - one from A8aM and one from Junior Academic Scholarship - which will help her achieve her next goal - to go into medicine. 1 14 Valedictorian Charlotte Salutat0rlan Jones Charlotte Jones received the honor of being the Salutatorian of her class by having a 98.52 grade point average. I feel proud to be the Salutatorian of my class. I never studied extensively like many people might think. I just always made sure my homework was completed and that l paid attention in class. Charlotte has attended Crowley schools since kindergarten and she really enjoyed high school - especial- ly playing sports. She played volleyball, basketball, and ran track. She was in Fellowship of Christian Athletes for two years, Spanish Club, and National Honor Society. The most enjoyable as well as difficult class Charlotte took was Advanced Biology. It was a small class which made it less formal. They did la lot of fun activities like seeing open-heart surgery and making a film on ecology. Math has always been easy for Charlotte. She enjoyed Algebra ll. Charlotte plans to attend North Texas State University and major in business computer information systems. Charlotte personally doesn't think that it takes hours of hard work to do well in high school. She at- tributes her success to her complete dedication to always do her best at everything. For instance, in lockers, a person could find pictures, mirrors, hair spray, cologne, personal notes, and an oc- casional forbidden snack or drink.
