Two wins and one loss in the AA state play-offs, advancing to the semi-finals before losing to Denver Christian. Including the state playoffs, the 1975-76 Chargers compiled an over-all record of ten wins and two losses for the finest season in Charger football history. The Chargers ranked number four in the state final ranking polls, their highest ever. To compile their record the Chargers relied on a bone crunching defense and an explosive triple-option offensive attack. There were many high-lights in the season, a tough-physical win over Rocky Ford, a three goal line stand win at Abbey, a tough loss to Las Animas in front of three thousand fans, a win over Meeker in the first play-off game ever at Ordway, and many other exciting moments. In summary the 1975-76 season provided players, coaches, and fans with many fine memories. The girls track program started out fast and hectic this year with 2 track meets per week. We started out with 13 girls and only lost one on the way. Everyone that stayed out did a fine job in working hard and trying new events. This team was a young team as we did not have any seniors. Hope- fully next year all these girls that were out will return. With encourage- ment from the returning girls we hope we can get more out for next year. At the state qualifying track meet everyone did a good job. We had 3 district champions, Tracy Grantham in the 220, Nancy Hallmark with a new district record in the shot put, and Melyn Grantham in the discus. The following girls also qualified for the state track meet-Dianna Reeves, Cathy Meyers, Kim Thayer, and Terry Grantham. Although these girls did not place in the state track meet, they turned in their best performances for the entire year. We were all very proud of the team for the season and the state track meet. 58 Coach Tom Brubaker GIRLS TRACK ,X ,i 'ist Q ,l 'Qmr H fi.. ,,.,. Il, ui M ' K ' 'W Q. .... 3? :. Further, the organiza- tion produced five people who became eligible for the new Speech Club letter. These people were Diana Montanez, Shayne Lane, Russell Jordan, Steve Fosdick, and Bill Woodruff. Speech Club did quite a bit of travelling this year, going to 12 competitions around the state, including two over- night trips. At these competitions, Speech Society members pitted their skills against literally hundreds of other students from as many as 55 schools in the Rocky Mountain Region. Thus, the meets not only provided quality compe- tition, but they also provided an environment where Speech Club mem- bers could meet and talk with students from all over the state. She was a loyal supporter of all our activities - from our high school sports to just being someone you could talk to about anything. She always had time to listen, to sympathize, to understand, to be a friend. We, the high school students, will never forget the extra boost she gave us and we will always appreciate what she did - from buying candles and stationery to yelling an extra loud Go Chargers! at a game. Thanks, Virginia. We will never forget you. BICENTENNIAL SALUTE TO '76 CROWLEY COUNTY SCHOOLS PAST El- PRESENT WSW' !'I'I x In District ff31 there were four schools, North Fowler, New Hope, Grand View, and Prairie View. Prairie View was up towards the Lincoln County border and six miles south was Grand View. Six miles south of Grand View was New Hope. Six miles south of New Hope was North Fowler. The top left picture is of New Hope and the top right picture is the North Fowler school in the background. The North Fowler picture was taken in 1944 or 1945. DISTRICT 32 DISTRICT 31 I3 Bill Broadbent taught in New Hope his first year of teaching, 1933-34. Ida Spencer taught at Grand View from 1940-45. Geoa Petrie taught at Grand View 1944-45. Audrey Wilson taught at Grand View her first year of teaching, 1922-23, with a salary of S900 that year. District 531 had 91 students in its census in 1916, when the district was first formed. In 1961 the census had 16 students listed. The four schools in District 532 were Star Valley, Bluff Springs, Antelope Mesa, and Pleasant Hill. The southern most school was Star Valley. Six miles north of Star Valley was Bluff Springs. In 1919 there were 2 acres given by Jack Ragsdale to build the school. In 1924 the old school torn down and a new one built. This school cost 52,000 to build, including a basement which many of the teachers used a living quarters. This is the school in the picture to the left. Ragsdales are now living in the school building. lust six miles north of the Bluff Springs school was the Antelope Mesa school. This school was built in 1915 and ran for 8 years and then torn down and a new school errected in 1923. The last year school was taught at Antelope Mesa was 1953. The northern most school was Pleasant View. In 1922 District 632 had 127 students listed on its census. Then in 1961 there were 18 students listed. CRDWAY The first Ordway school is shown in the bottom far left picture. The school shown at the near left was built and then destroyed by fire in 1917. After the fire, the present school was built. This school is pictured at the top left. An advanced architectural design was used for the new school, using a one story design instead of the usual two and three story designs. All three schools stood on the same grounds. 6' .' 1 I .U 2:-if I T I V . Lfx ' 'EL X 1 1 gf 2 . . J F., , V' Q.. TV? w.y+,,,,, ' -. NUMA There were two Numa schools, Numa and North Numa. The picture above, taken this year, shows Numa, two mile west of Ordway. Many residents of Crowley County attended some school here. This school is still standing. Not much is known of North Numa except that it had closed some time before 1917. The Numa District, District 19416, was once part of the Manzanola District. The census of District 16 in the year of 1913, listed 143 students and in 1961 listed 78 students. 103 CROWLEY CCNSCLIDATED K s f , 53 15 , , 5, ,' .ws 14- fi ,f ff'-A af.. In 1913 the census had the Lolita District listed with 51 students and in 1961 it listed 5 students including, John Bowers, Steve Hagans, Dennis Mar- kus, Susan Hagans, and Judy Markus. This was the last school in its district to hold class. The school house was torn down. HORSE CREEK NORTH AND SOUTH The Horse Creek school was holding class in 1914, says Mrs. Brian Carter, but she doesn't know exactly when it started. It is believed that the school house was moved to Karval in 1926 or 1927. BRECKENRIDGE The Breckenridge school was west of Windmill Lake, north of Crowley. The school probably opened around 1900 and closed around 1915. BOX SPRINGS There were two Box Springs schools, North Box Springs and South Box Springs. The North Box Springs, located north of Ordway, across the road from the Dale Rusher residence, was built somewhere around 1900. The school closed in approxi- mately 1930. There were several Crowley County residents who went to school here, includ- ing, I oe Corum, Elona Kroph, Afton Harmon, and Kenneth Carter. The South Box Springs school was east of the Breckenridge Bridge, north of Ordway. The students of South Box Springs attended school in a home until 1911, when a building was built. Ray Peterson attended school at South Box Springs. The school closed in 1916. LINCOLN COUNTY SCHOCLS Several Crowley County Residents at- tended schools in Lincoln County. The Peak View school was right on the Lincoln County - Crowley County border, east of the Gano Ranch.
