Led by a number of outstanding seniors which included Rick Squires, Mike Nelson, Bruce Malcolm, jerry Jacobson, Mike Maley, Harold Brockelsby, Noel Reece, and Mitch Waggener. The Cougars started off the season by downing Yoncalla 46-13, Powers 21-12, Oakland 20-0, Monroe 14-0 before bowing to McKenzie 21-7 on the Victors home field. After this stunning upset the fighting Cougars came back to down Lowell 13-0 in a hard fought contest. The next game against Harris- burg, defending State Champions, was one of the highlights of the year as Mike Maley took the first play from scrimmage 67 yards for the opening touchdown. Crow went on to completely dominate the game and win 31-7. sit .--H5 Elf J ' 3-3 G ' uv. - ig: AV . f 9 , at ' s Zlgq' Rick drops Harrisburg behind the line. The next game was disappointing as the Cougars were edged out 13-6 by an inspired Glendale team. The last game of the season was against Elkton who had not lost a game but had three ties. This game meant the league championship. The Cougars, playing without services of starting tackle Rick Squires, rose to the occasion and powered Elkton 20-7 to gain the league championship and the chance to meet Colton in the State Semi-finals. The semi-final game was played at Crow. The Cougars without starters Noel Reece who had done an excellent job against Elkton, and Rick Squires, con- sidered by many as the best tackle in the league, started off well and controlled the game during the early part and scored first. Colton came back late in the 2nd period and went ahead 7-6 at half-time on the passing of Colton. Although the Cougars played well they had 3 scoring drives stopped on costly fumbles. Colton scored once more and the score ended 13-6 Colton. Although the loss was dis- appointing it is generally conceded that the 1967 Crow team was one of the best the Cougars have fielded. x 5, 15, J Mike scores on first play. F... we begin with the log Logs like these, ready to roll to our Vaughn Mills, are the basic raw material for high-q ual- ity Long-Bell wood products. And logs are a backbone of the area's economy. At Vaughn we convert Douglas fir, hemlock, and western red cedar logs to their highest possible potential with maximum utilization. Many factors are considered and evaluated in properly allocating each log either to the sawmill or the plywood plant, including log diameter, length, amount of decay, knots, splits, and shake. In addition to the variety of plywood and lumber products produced at Vaughn, chips are made from manufac- turing leftovers and railed to mills in the area for paper making. Our harvest of timber in the Vaughn woodlands and conversion of logs to wood products employs approximate- ly 640 people with annual payroll of nearly S4 million. Another million dollars are spent locally through purchases of materials, equipment, and supplies. It all starts with the log. We are dependent on it . . . on its perfection orimperfection . . . on its availabil- ity and its adaptability.
