Text from Pages 1 - 122 of the 1972 volume:

“Happy T” Frantic-Together The week before Homecoming is filled with imagina- tion, competition, preparation, and sometimes a little frus- tration too. Preparing a float takes a lot of cooperation and hard work, not to mention the fun. The reward comes at the end of the week when the floats are displayed and judged. 6 Decorating the halls is each classes way of show- ing their creative ability in making their halls corre- spond with their floats theme. This year the Artictic Juniors walked away with first place “Congratulations Juniors! You did a fine job.” 7 The “1971 Homecoming Court was led by Sally Brad- shaw and Rod Adams. Queen Sally has been very active in high school. Lvery marching season she was seen up front as a talented and pretty majorette in the Senior Band. Sally has been a cheer- leader her Freshman and Sophomore years. This year she is busy with Student Council. Participating in the Student Council Exchange day is one of the responsibilities Sally has as a representative. Kint Rod has been active in almost every sport. He has been a varsity basketball player for 2 years, football player for 3 years and captain of the football team his se- nior year. He was a varsity baseball player for 3 years and president of this year’s varsity club. In Rod’s senior year, while he was away from sports, he generously gave his time being the school milkman. The other senior candidates were: Linda Penticost Lindsey Rankin Karen Fisher Dennis Hawk- Class Representatives were: Juniors Terry Babcock Steve O'Connor Sophomores Cheryl Konen Ed Matthews Freshman Linda O’Connor Doug Wurmlinger Me and You and You and Me “You’ve got a Friend” was the 1971 Homecoming Theme. The dance was held in the Cafeteria featuring the, “Comstock Load”. Most couples enjoyed listening rather than dancing. Queen Sally and King Rod 10 Juniors: “Victory is our Porpoise S e c 0 n d P 1 a c e Seniors: Chugg'n for a Victory freshmen: Skunk Km Tonight is the night guys and if you do your best you can ride on the firetruck again. The ever-rollicking, frolicking cheer- leaders and their sponsor added much pep to the homecoming parade. The marching 100 Band had another great year start- ing out with a band camp that cannot be described in words. For the second straight year the band took first place in the State Fair competition. This honor was fol- lowed by a call from action line inviting the One Hun- dred to play in a special parade. No other group at school seemed as “Happy Together as the band led by senior Dennis Hawk. 12 Truly another great year for the Cross-Country team. Congratulations! The team wasco-captained by Lyle Farraghi and Courtney Nicholson. They boasted a over-all record of 5-2. They placed third in regionals and sent two members to the state finals; Lyle Par- raghi and Jeff Varty. TheCros-Lex Cross Country Team consists of: Lyle Parraghi Courtney Nicholson Jeff Sutton Bill Wichert Stan Munseli Frank Lambert Gordie Shell Jim Todd Jeff Varty Gregg Bartow The team was coached by Mr. Zielinski. Whatever We Did, We Did Together The 1971 Freshman Football team consists of: Joseph Bahnweg. Guy Bennett. Brian Brown. Jeff Durccka, Ruben Garcia, Terry Gaw.Bucky Goldschmidt, Kevin Hartzell, George Kcgloviu, Julius R. UFave, Wallace. Mencavage, Scott Phillips, Robert Rotkcfeller. Cary Sasinow- ski, Terry Smith, Cary Suerwicr, Jerome Tanski, Jon Travis. Ray West- brook, Fred Cummings. Dan A. Ferris, Doug Wurmlinger. A1 Harneck. Rick Pawlak, Frank A. Keller. PIONEERS? The 1971 J.V. Football team consists of: Dennis J. Bigger, Mark FJlis, l arry Longendykc, Jim Moran, George O’Connor, Randy O’Connor. David J. Zink, Tom Hewitt, Bob Burch, Tim Speed. Paul Smith, Ed Mathews. Steve Walker. Dave Kredcll, Ron Vallee. Jerry Hurley, Tom McLane. Ken Whit- more, Mike Skelton, Al Robertson. Steve McGarvie, Dan Manger Smith, Dan Deittrick, Ralph McNabb, Tom McLane. All League Jeff Dennison, senior halfback and linebacker on the Pioneer football team, has been selected as a defensive back on the St. Clair Area League all-star team. He was the only Cros-Lex player chosen by the coaches. Dennison started the season as a defensive halfback but injuries to Rod Adams and Mike Phillips prompted Cocah Stu Parsell to shift him to a halfback position on of- fense and to linebacker on defense where he immediately stood out, especially on the defensive unit. He was credited with an average of nine solo tackles and an equal number of assists per game. 15 This past football season ended with a 2-6 record. Al- though it was Coach Parseli's first year, he did an excellent job of coaching the team, it was noticable that each player gave his all and tried their best as a team. As spectators we were aware of the heavy fog that drifted over the playing field; during portions of the game the players were merely shadows. When a favor is needed, you can always count on Mrs. Hall to help. Her generosity and concern for others is deeply appreciated by those who receive and notice it. Her laughter and little jokes always seem to brighten up your day. She is not only a teacher aide, but to many, a friend. So Mrs. Hall, the class of ’72 salutes you and wishes to express our thanks for all you have done for us. MEMORY Along with the school year being “Happy Together” we have al- so felt the great feeling of loss. We have again experienced another one of life’s tragedies as we have lost Scott Thibeau and Gary Moran, not only as classmates but also as friends. Surely they were known to bring laughter to everyone they touched and at the same time fill your heart with love. No words could ever express our loss over Scott and Gary. The court consisted of Lucille Bombyk, Sandy VanDeVelde, Nancy Vert. Bill Rowling, Jim Moran, and Scott Phillips. 58 59 60 It takes many hours of practice to make a great band and a great band is what the pioneers are constantly strviing for. One of the most important goals of the band is to achieve and keep a good reputation. And it’s only fair to say that this goal is one the Pioneer Band has achieved 100 times over. 61 VARSITY BASKETBALL-Standing, I. to r.: Coach P. Jackson, S. O'Connor, M. Doyle, R. Riley, D. With their help the new Jr. High was started and is to be completed by the fall of 1973. A big thanks goes to the administration. 70 Foreign Exchange Students The gap between the Eastern and Western hemi- sphere was lessened this year by the visit of a bright and smiling student from Sweden. Jane Klintback, the “daughter” of Rev. and Mrs. Elmer Drury, cast a shining ray of sunshine at Cros-Lex. Not only did Jane tell us of her foreign ways, but she was the first girl from Cros-Lex to be honored as a Campus Life Sweetheart. This year the Student Council helped our foreign un- derstanding by sending two Cros-Lex students overseas. Kim Moran (not Pictured), and Warren Durecka, both seniors were chosen. Jim, the first of our students to go to South America spent his summer in Chili, while Warren was enjoying new experiences in Germany. 71 Lynne Bartley Linda Adams Rodney Adams Andrea Aitken Jage Bauchat Jackie Bauchat Sue Biskey Nancy Biskey Frank Bommarito 73 Loren Bowling Jeanne Brabant Jane Brabyn Sally Bradshaw John Brockman Debbie Brown Sheree Brown Vickie Brumm Clay Burch 74 Linda Casterline Mary Jo Ciochon Kevin Clark Julie Clarkson Barb Cole 75 CLASS OFFICERS Karen Fisher-President Peggy Patterson-V.
