The IGER IQH3 Published By THE SENIOR CLASS of Crossville Community High School Crossville, Illinois Presenting Page Two Service EDUCATION SERVES If one will really stop to think, He will find that a most important link In the life of every American girl and boy Is the free education that all of us enjoy. The schools serve us far better than we know For we can't use our imagination enough to show What would happen to the American ways, If we received no education in our youtfhful days. An educated one can serve his community better far Than one whose schooling is not up to par, For he knows more of happenings in times gone by- Of what he should accomplish in the future, and why Education even serves the man on the battle line, While to his country Yhe's giving his service so fineg And it inspires him to fight, and harder fightg For it's taught him he's doing it for the right. Thus it appears that education has served everyone Throughout all the time that has come and gone, And if we use it, it will still endeavor To serve us constantly in the future, forever. -Edward Armstrong. IN THE SERVICE DEDICATION Sgt. Charles L. Hortin, now stationed at Columbia Air Base, Colum- bia, South Carolina, was employed as instructor at Crossville for four years. After serving these years at Crossville, he was called to serve Uncle Sam in the greatest fight of all-the fight against the Axis. Sgt. Hortin is cooperating whole heartedly in this way. In memory of those pleasant days that We shared with Sgt. Hortin at Crossville High and in order to show our appreciation for the great task which he lSs,pd!'f0H!1illg We dedicate this, our 1943 Tiger. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY There comes a time in every person's life when he must meet his doom-so it was on August 23, 1939, for the entering freshmen. For about two weeks the school building seemed as large as Madison Square Garden. The second week we were greeted with fancy belts and H20 by our senior friends introducing themselves-their way. But soon, endurance changed to contentment and we were on the long road to a happy career. At the beginning of our second year, we were aware of the fact that we were no longer beginners. Of course, some of the teachers were new, but we liked them, too. Our class was very unfortunate in having the smallest enrollmentg therefore, we had to work especially hard to raise funds for the class treasury. There was no lack of enter- tainment as We had several parties. At the close of the term everyone was glad to know that he would soon become a jolly junior. During our junior year we found that the war had deprived us of many of our privileges. We sacrificed our play and almost all of our parties. Because of our small class we had to work very hard to sup- ply sufficient funds for our class treasury, but we did have a very suc- cessful banquet. When it came time for the last semester tests, We went through' tihem like an American plane goes through Tokyo. We were now confronted by the fact that our one desire would be fulfilled -we are seniors. Our last year found the class drizzled down to twenty-one mem- bers. Most of us had spent four years together. Uncle Sam is now bidding for some of our classmates, and we know that soon we may be scattered around the world. We seniors have won honors elsewhere, but no honor is commensurate with that of graduating from good old C. C. H. S. Reminiscing the past four years we find many persons who have cooperated with us to help us attain high standards of Americanism. We, the Seniors of '43, are grateful to each individual who has helped maintain these standards, and we are always willing to exemplify them. S. to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the graduating class of 1943. Here we meet with several classmates and notice the changes that have occurred during our absence. Let's look around awhile- Oh, I was afraid of that-A. W. Ashley is still an old bachelorg and here is Elza Barbre, now a high class fisherman on Crooked Creek . Quiet Emma Jean Burt is the wife of a big naval officer, and Arthur Charles says he enjoys being the principal of -Crossville High. Some say Joyce Carr is helping Charles Davis avoid paying income taxesg Stinky , by the Way, is teaching a course in English III at C. C. H. S. He took it so llong that he is well learned in it. We always knew Leo Endicott had ambition. He is now the pro- prietor of a pool room and soda fountain. And who is that gentleman? Behold! Crossville's most outstanding lawyer-Kelley Fitzgerald. Joe Graddy has started a dry goods store. He found so many hair rib- bons in the car that it made a profitable business. And Janet Hughes is a WAVE at the Great Lakes Training Sta- tion. Who is that intelligent looking crealture with the horn-rimmed glasses? Why, of all people4Lelonard Perkins, who is teaching Eng- lish IV. Now he can sympathize with Miss Munzenmaier. Yes, we have 'our share of uniforms . . . Here is Glen Piland who is a pilot instructor at some WAFS camp. Who could that be talking so much? Paralee Ridenour, of course, who is the wife of a prosperous farmer and lives near Carmi. Earline Slankard is helping our country 'by working nights in an airplane plant. She says she can take the grave-yard shift quite well. Of all people, Lauretta Schalk! We find that our queen is la com- mercial teacher at L1ockyear's Business College. Wilma Sturm is the prosperous owner of a bird farm. She now helps care for little Robins , and Willard Sturm is the publisher of the famous book, How to Graduate in Four Years . Virginia Way- land gave up the restaurant business land now is the wife of a prosper- ous oil wlorker. Nadine Warren has been married and divorced several times, but is at last content, having decided there is really only one. Kenneth Warren is a successful officer in the Army Air Corps. Our gaze has traveled over the guests and we again become heartily familiarized with all of our previous classmates. The evening is turned over to entertainment and everyone is carried away with the spirit of their school-days. Page Thir een SQUIBS Name-A. W. ASHLEY Favorite pastime-Studying. Some things in high school thrilled us, But others left us lowered. Miss James taught us Julius Caesar, Algebra had us floored. In our sophomore year we struggled With geometry and English H, With biology and World history. But we finally make it through. In our third year at Crossville High, They've added another class. The boys in aeronautics Sincerely hope they'l1 pass. Those thousand word themes in English, We thought we could never pen. But Miss James had other ideas, And those themes were handed in. Of course by this time the Jalps Had started an awful fuss. So scrap campaigns and war bond drives Are important things to us. In this our Junior year in school, Our goal is now in sight. Page Eighteen SOPHIOMORE SERVICE In the late summer during the year of our Lord 1941 A. D., twenty-nine intelligent- looking adolescents, one-third eager, two- thirds reluctant, timidly mounted the stair- way of C. C. I-I. S. to .begin a new phase of their education. The first few days were very confusing. For our sponsor we elected Keith Whetstone, who will long be remembered for his love of milk. Eddie Brown was elected president: Fred Brown, vice president: Faye Davis, sec- retary, and Lynda Lou Lamar, Student Coun- cil member. Several weeks ahead of time, we began worrying about the semester exams. The second semester was different only because we studied a little less, whispered a little more, were treated a little less like morons and a little more like human beings. The next September we once again mou'nt- ed the stairs to those immortal halls of learning . Since we were so much more mature, we got down to .business right away- had a class meeting and chose Charles Con- rad, the new coach, as our sponsor. We elected Dallas Kelley, presidentg Bob Martin, vice president, Patty Funk, secretary-treas- urerg and Lou Rudolph, Student Council mem- ber. Our party, held in the assembly, was quite successful. Some of the sophomore 'boys weren't too content with girls from their own classg they would have preferred freshmen, or even juniors, but-the hot dogs tasted swell, anyway. As the days grew warmer, they also grew longer and a. little sadder. Again the grade cards came out, the last bell rang, and we were free for another summer. We have traveled one-half of the way. Only two more years and our high school days will be ended. The sophomore year is really only one step up the stairway of life, but don't let anyone kid you, Freshmen, it's a pretty steep step! SINE CERA, CLAIRE SANDERS, LOU RUDOLPH. SOPHOMORE SPECIALS RUMORS It has been rumored that Eloise Ridenour is harboring a secret love. Come on, Eloise, and tell us all about it. Is it true that Bob Warren is still carry- ing the torch for Hazel? Joan McGee says she :would like to be a closer friend to Earle. There's your chance, boys. Is Imogene Keeler really on a diet? ? ? ? What was Claire Sander's purpose in writ- ing to Lois Leeds concerning Milady Beau- tiful ? Does Patty Funk like Salty Finch as much as it seems? What's happened to the romance 'between Lou Rudolph and Chester Potter? Is Frankie 'Slankard 'bashful or just nat- urally quiet? Does Ted Johnson still care for Joan Mc- Gee or has Earle beaten his time? Is Hazel Lacefield Miss James' or Miss Munzenmaier's -pet? It is rumored that a certain sophomore girl has a crush on a certain boy in the eighth grade. Is this true ? ? ? ? ? ? BEAUTY TIPS Patty Funk's own recipe for lovely hands is for 1 Mayse to hold them nightly. Lou Rudolph gets her peaches and cream complexion from a nightly bathing in butter- milk. Dean Higginson says that charcoal is just the thing to touch up those eyebrows. Eloise Ridenour recommends cornmeal for that after-bath dusting. Norma Cleveland informs us that a. mix- ture of sulphur and egg yolk is just the thing to keep those blonde tresses blonde. Bob Warren never uses anything but hard cider as an after-shave lotion. Eddie Brown endorses vanilla extract for that romantic scent. Lynda Lou Lamar says there's nothing better than 'cinnamon and nutmeg for that spicy effect. 'Claire Sanders keeps that velvet-smooth complexion with a weekly pack of salt, oat- meal, and egg yolk. WANT ADS WANTED-Someone to appreciate me. Imo- gene Keeler. We were introduced to Major Aylsworth and Captains Ryan, Curd, James, Munzenmaier, Conrad, and Whetstone. We were not yet ready for military service, but we h a v e t o g o t o school as a preliminary. When we became ac- customed to C. C. H. S., we decided it was time we elected our officers. The results of the elec- tion were as follows: Earle Hanks, president, Wayne Hughes, vice president, Ruth Kuyken- dall, secretary and treasurer, and Mr. Whet- stone, sponsor. FIVE SECRETS OF HAPPINESS: Money, MOney, MONey, MONEy, MONEY LIBRARY STAFF STANDING fleft to rightl-Mary Burt, Joan McGee, Lynda Lou Lamar, Aletha Yancey Iris Langford, Rosemary Taylor. SEATED-Miss James, Claire Sanders, Betty Jo Kornegger, Norma Cleveland. Madly dashing into the library, :Chester calls out, Miss James, I want a book I can read in a. hurry for that 'book report tomorrow! Oh, you mean the kind with the largest print, the heaviest paper and the most pictures? Well, a-a.-a, well, no, not exactly, but that report is due tomorrow! Have you got any? Now, Chester, you know what I think about the person who waits until the last minute to get his work, but I'll see what I can find. Together they go to look among the few books in the library for one to suit his needs. That scene has taken place time and again, but now it isn't such a difficult task to find books for each student. In the fall of 1941, the library room. was given to a new department in the school. The books in the fiction and biography divisions were taken downstairs to the English room, and the rest were left in the study hall. A new bookcase was acquired to hold the books which were coming in. In October of 1942, the library was increasing so rapidly that other facilities were needed. A larger book- case, a four drawer catalogue and table, a magazine rack and a dictionary stand were placed in the already crowded room. Two hundred books were added: eighteen more magazines were made availableg the Reader's Guide and a vertical file system were started. The closet was shelved to have a file for the magazines. A staff of tenl as- sistant librarians is being trained to keep the departments of the library in good run- ning order. With the aid of Miss Munzenmaier, they are helping Miss James cata- logue and organize all of the lbooks. Every morning there is enthusiasm and excitement in the library, especially those mornings when Eddie Brown brings in his one-month-overdue books. Eddie has been a real financia.1 help to the library this year, and the staff believes that his education is more complete for he always keeps the books long enough to thoroughly digest them. Well, Chester, we hope you have more books from which to choose before you fin- ish high school, but we'll not promise that all will have large print and beautiful pic- tllI'eS. The band of Crossville Community High School is becoming one of the most important organizations of the school. It was organized three years ago, and for the past two years has been under the direction of Mr. Keith Whetstone, who has a Bachelor's degree from Murray State College at Murray, Kentucky. He has recently received a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois. Four high-stepping baton twirlers lead the parade, and each section of the iband does its job- well-all working together to produce the best effect possible. Through the effort of the band and the cooperation of the school, money was finally raised to buy caps for the entire band and a new drum majorette suit, thus completing the uniforms. The band operates on a merit system. At the beginning of the year, each mem- ber is a private. There are five officers, including Lance Corporal, Conporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain. All members are raised to higher rank by vote of the Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain, who are the honorary officers of the band. Only those showing merit and enthusiasm gain higher rank. October 7, the Senior Plaque of Honor for the year of 1941-42 was awarded to Doris Cagle and Tim Fieber, Jr., in a special assembly program. The seniors elected to the Plaque of Honor for this year are Wilma Sturm and Kelley Fitzgerald. The highlights of the iband activities during the past school year were: a spell- ing bee on October 233 a concert and special feature in the parade at Carmi on Corn Day, a band-sponsored program presented by V-Roy, the Magiciang a formal ban- quet on December 19, and a concert February 25 for the County Teachers' Institute. The band also played several numbers at the Dedication Services for Private William Duckworth, Marine, killed at Guadalcanal. During the basketball season, our band has provided a. lively interlude between games. The entire school and community takes off its hat to this well-developed organization-Our Band. FRONT ROW-Bob Warren, Kenneth Warren, Ted Johnson, Harold Samson, Eddie Brovsm Alvin Mayse, Charles Severns. The 1942-43 basketball season at Crossville was a very successful one although, at times, the team appeared weak. This team, compos- ed of three seniors, one junior, and one sophomore, with two juniors as good reserves, was victorious over several famous teams. However, at times when it counted most, luck changed and those same teams took the trophies. Unlike other teams Crossville 'has supported, this one is composed of boys about to be called by Uncle Sam. Present world conditions have caused them to seriously consider the service they are now giving to the school and to the community. The 'Tigers have had to cancel some of their games because of gasoline and tire rationing. The three seniors concluded their C. C. H. S. service on the hard- wood in the Regional tournament when the team was turned back by a. good Carmi team. We leave in the window the service stars for these three seniors who have so faithfully served us throughout their school days. May they ever shine brightly. ALVIN MAYSE vs Q, iw How Our TIGERS Are Serving CHARLES CONRAD Coach Coach Conrad, through his tire less ef- forts, has guided the 1942-43 Tigers through a successful season. His cool- headed judgment and tact at the right time have steadied the team during tense mo- ments. The Tiger Fans , long noted for their loyalty and support, have 'backed the coach and 'boys 100 per cent this year. LEONARD PERKINS Center Uncle Len , our tall, well-fbuilt center has been a valuable asset to our team and will certainly be missed by next year's Tigers . Perk is capable of handling the roughest players and can always educate them to his own satisfaction. His rangy work and expert rebounding, together with his many under-the-basket shots, have made him a star that Crossville will long remember. GLEN PILAND Forward Piland , our fast and mighty forward, will be sadly missed by next year's squad. He plays a fast game and is usually on top when the total points are counted. One of his best characteristics is his ability to dribble the iball down the floor and put it into the basket. Piland's four years of basketball at Crossville will, no doubt, re- main with him for years to come. CHARLES DAVIS Forward Stinky , who played as guard for three years, was transformed into a very able forward this season. His height, coolness, and determination were important factors in gaining his place among the first five . Stinky's place will be hard to fill on next year's team because his opponents seldom came too fast or too good for him to hold down. His fancy, one-handed, semi-long shot rolled urp the score in many an excit- ing game. DON PRINCE Guard Don, a junior, shows a lot of improvement over last year and, through his ability to guard, has held his place on the first five . His height and quick movements have been advantageous during the games, and his many successful shots have piled up the scores for us I-Ie has the fi ht and fur - g Y 'needed to win and always plays a hard game. No douibt, he will be the backbone of the 1943-44 Crossville Tigers. EDDIE BROWN Guard Eddie, although only a sophomore, has the makings of a star. Throughout the season he has started almost every game. A1- though he does not have many opportuni- ties to shoot, when he does, he can sink one. His guarding is superb for he can hold his opponent down to a measly scor- ing rate. Eddie has well earned his posi- tion on the team through his consistent efforts. ALVIN MAYSE Guard Mazie , a junior, has played good bas- ketball all year. His game, mostly de- fensive, was quick and accurate. During' the latter part of the season Mayse de- veloped a quick step that enabled him to go around his man and intercept many passes. Mayse should see plenty of action next year. ' CHARLES SEVERNS Center Severns has raxpidly worked up to a high position on our first ten . He always plays part of the game and has -proved himself to be one of our best floor men. Charlie is right in the struggle and usually comes out on top. Undoubtedly, he will be one of 'Crossville's stars for the 1943-44 team, especially if he continues to advance as rapidly as he has during the past year. HAROLD SAMSON Forward Samson, although small, is one of the fast men of our team. He has a shot that is hard to guard, and once turned loose, he can pile up point after point toward a vic- tory. Samson, a junior, has shown so much improvement, that it is quite certain he can be counted on for next year's vic- torious team. KENNETH WARREN Guard Kenneth has been handicapped by not hav- ing played lbasketball before coming to Crossville. It was not until this year that he earned a 'place on the first ten . He is a good mixer ion the floor and often roughs the game. Kenneth is Willing to lisben to advice and uses it to the 'best ad- vantage. TED JOHNSON Forward Ted, a sophomore, has just begun his bas- ketball career. The future, however, is bright for him, and it appears that he has the makings of a star. He gives' -backing to the team and is capable of carrying on the team-work while the varsity rests. The whole school was divided into squads of four people-a Corporal, a Private First Class, and two Privates. Organization was in the inter- est of defense and there has been good cooperation in every project the Corps has been asked to undertake. Each mem- ber has received a red V insignia for service in the group. The first campaign was the launching of a scrap drive . Corporals and privates alike dived into the heat of the hunt. Wagons and trucks canvassed the town and nearby countryside to bring in nearly 32,000 pounds of scrap-one of the largest heaps in the country. Old tires, scrap rubber, metal were there, together with 57 old batteries, wanted for the lead they contained. The Victory Corps is divided into four groups: Land Service, Air Service, Production Service, and Community Service. To qualify for higher rank, military drill and training must be taken. Thus far, seven boys have received the insignia of Land Service. They are: Bob Mar- tin, Alvin Mayse, Charles Davis, Willard Sturm, Dallas Kelly, Leroy Mokler, and Ted Johnson. Those who have qualified for the insignia of Air Service are: Glen Piland, Don Long, Don Prince, Joe Graddy, Edward Armstrong, and Leonard Perkins. The U. S. O. Canteen in Evansville, Indiana, put out a call for food for Uncle Sam's service men. On February 10 our Victory Corps answered this call when we gave twenty-eight candy bars and 34.85. In addition, students received donations from the town of candy, a few pounds of coffee, and other foods. Agnes Perkins was chosen to repre- sent our school and accompanied the food to the canteen. When she returned, she was very enthusiastic about the organization and its work. January 4, we began to record the amount of stamps and bonds bought by the individual squads of the Victory Corps. To date the members of our school have purchased over 33,000 in bonds and stamps, or enough to pay for three jeeps. A fourth one has been started. The next major campaign of the Victory Corps will be a tin-can drive. Every tin can collected will make one hand grenade. Even though a few would help, many can do much more. Each of these individual campaigns 'has helped our V Corps perform a service for home, industry, and victory. Thirty-four X ,X NN ' w . X. Wx , K Y V RX, YX N 5 n NJ 1 E . Q' I ' Nf J If 'X .
