That's the only way to describe the Crossville Lions 13-12 overtime loss to the Lauderdale County Tigers in the second round of the state 2A football playoffs here last night. The Crossville team and fans have to be wondering what they have to do to win a football game after last night. The Lions almost completely dominated their Rogersville visitors but still couldn’t prove it by the scoreboard. Statistically, the game was no contest. Crossville ran 74 scrimmage plays to Lauderdale County's 33. The Lions had 19 first downs and 238 yards total offense to Rogersville's seven and 126. Fumbles and blocked kicks, though, proved fatal to Crossville. The Lions fumbled away one scoring chance and a blocked punt set up Rogersville's regulation time touchdown A blocked field 5°al attempt cost the Lions a golden opportunity for victory Rogersville takes 13 in the final minute of the fourth quarter. Then in overtime, the gallant Lions gambled for a two-point conversion after a touchdown had pulled them within a single point, but a pass attempt was incomplete and Crossville hopes for a 2A state title were ended. Lauderdale County made its only sustained drive of the game on its first possession of the second half and it was eventually stopped at the Crossville three. However, on the first play after stopping the Tigers. Crossville fumbled the ball right back at the four. two piays later Lauderdale County returned the gift with a fumble which Crossville's James Turner caught in the air The Lions then launched a 96- yard, 19 play drive which consumed eight minutes of the clock. All of the plays were on the ground. The big plays on the march were a fourth down run for a first down at midfield by Griffin and a 14 yard run by sophomore tailback Joe Davis to the Rogersville one to set up the tying score. Griffin, with second effort, scored behind left guard with 8:15 left in the game. Griffin's PAT kick was wide right. In the closing minutes of the quarter. Lauderdale County’s Michael Haraway fumbled a Crossville punt and Ricky Harper alertly recovered foi the Lions on the Tiger 21. A pass from Bruce to tigh end David McDaniel netted i first down on the six. Three runs got only a yard and Griffin lined up for a field goal try with only 51 seconds left. Ricky Green crashed in from the right side and blocked the 22-yard attempt and the game was headed to overtime. Crossville won the toss before the tie-breaker period and elected to go on defense. On the first play Haraway broke over the right side and scored from the 10. Tad Beddingfile converted and Lauderdale County led 13-6. -12 OT win On Crossvidlle’s turn with the ball, Davis got seven on first down to the three. Griffin fumbled on seconu down but Don Scott recovered at the one Bruce then sneaked in for the touchdown. On the go-for- broke conversion try a Bruce pass in the left flat to Griffin deopped incomplete and Lauderdale County had advanced to the sen i-finals of the 2A playoffs. BACK - D. Hall, J. The students of Crossville High School are very proud of the success of the Varsity Football Team this past season. The praise that we give doesn't stop there. We are also encouraged of success in the future by the good work of the Junior Varsity. Coach Bittinger's team was undefeated and almost unscored on. The only score was given up on a pass interception that was returned for a touchdown. These dedicated athletes should improve the coming years at Crossville High School. Where we came and worked and filled our minds, And grew a little every day. We often slowed but never faltered, Along our happy way. And though some days did not seem happy, Their memories in our hearts will stay. We'll long remember that glad day, When we finally ordered our rings. And how excited we all were, When we saw those gorgeous things. But, farewell dear days of growing, When we sought to learn life's claim. And though we’ll grow in the days to come, It can never be the same. Now our class, like pieces of a puzzle, Has been scattered and tom apart. But we have taken something and left something - We have taken our memories and left our hearts. And ten or twenty years from now; We'll look back and sadly say: I still remember all these things - It seems just like yesterday . . . Tony Davis Editor 160
