Although this may seem unusual, this is the case at Crossett High. Fred Haynes, Ronald Matheney, and Mike White have gone into the ministry. In their own words, they have been called by God and have decided to devote their lives to preaching His word. Ride 'em cowgirl, is a phrase Janet Nichols has heard all her lite. Janet has been riding horses since the age oi six. Janet placed sixth in state competition in 78. Janet has also won 200 trophies in competition on her horse, Tom Par- ker. Glen Womble, a soph- omore at CHS, has an unusual kind ot hobby. He has been interested in herpetology, the study of reptiles, since about the age of ten. Glen has killed many different kinds of snakes and has been bitten several times, but only once by a poisonous one. Glen kills the snakes, dries their skin, and makes belts with them. He also enjoys tanning hides. Opening - 3 A-Opening Mark Young, the Bobin Hood of CHS, spends a great deal ot time in the woods. But he is not chasing Maid Marion or forming revolutions against the kingdom, rather, Mark bow hunts. That is the only thing that Mark has in common with the green hero of Sherwood forest, Mark has picked up bow hunt- ing as a hobby. As a result of his practicing, Mark has become rather good at it. He has won several tournaments around the state of Arkansas. Besides bow- ing for trophies, Mark also goes out during the bow season for many game such as deer and turkey. The Houdini of CHS, Brett Boyer, enthralls his audiences with his magical ability. Brett, a senior, has been interested in magic since about the age of 12, when he got a magic kit tor Christmas. Brett has always been inspired by Houdini and all his books and tricks. He orders his tricks from Little Rock, but improvises them to his own liking. It was one day up on top ot his mountain when coon huntin' wasn't doing very well that Mr. Cecil Bitter just picked up a block of wood and began to Whittle. Ever since that time Mr. Rit- ter has whittled objects that have taken upto as long as tour hours. One ot his favorite articles to work on is the gun, Mr. Bitter Mark Young shows his trophies, bow, and arrows. Brett Boyer demonstrates his magic. They have participated in judo tournaments and ranked high in their divisions. Mike and Daryn hope to proceed to Black Belts and later instruct classes them- selves. In Eagles waiting for Rogers' Rams to come out of huddle. Coach 's Comment Coach McMahen comments: The 1978 Jr. Eagles had a terrible start in their 29-O loss to Dollarway Jr. High. Fortunately, we came from being dismal to being a pretty good junior high ball club. Our big games this year were our first win of the season over El Dorado Barton: a 26-24 win over the Magnolia Jrs. in the clos- ing seconds of the gameg and the 13-0 win over the Camden Jrs. Eagle detense lines up against Camden. Many times the junior high football squad has to play in the shadow of the senior high team. This was especially true this year. The Sr. Eagles ended their regular season with a 9-1 record and they then went on to win the State AAA Championship, while the Jr. Eagles ended their season with a 6-1-1 record, The record of the '78 Jr. Eagles, along with the records of the '77 C7-O-1 J and the '76 teams C3-4-1 J, indicates that the senior high team should have a winning season next year. Why? Because the junior team is the foundation forthe senior team Jrs. According to Basketball Coach Wally Flauth, winning in any basketball game is the goal he is aiming for. Coach Ftauth also feels that when the team plays to their maximum potential, they will win the game. ln order to win, you need to have a system. Coach Ftauth said that he goes to the player that has been doing well in practice and over a period ol several games. This player will put the ball up more in hopes of scoring, Coach Rauth said that for a young team which had only two returning lettermen, the Eagles have done very well. He said that the Eagles were strong on rebounds, and they seemed to have quickly overcome their inexperience. ln comparison to other teams in the District, Coach Flauth strongly stated, We're as good as anybody in the District. There are some sports that reflect the interests or talents ofthe participant. For the graceful skater, being in the rink can bring as much enjoy- ment as Contact sports. While with skateboarding and Waterskiing the sport is mostly freestyle, they still can be as enjoyable as a game of bas- ketball. Chess and checkers rely on mental abilities rather than physical strengths, but the thrill of victory is still important. Pool, pin-ball, ping-pong, and hand ball require skill just the same as golf or tennis. The outdoor activities such as boating, horseback riding, fishing, and hunting are as strenuous as a game of tennis. The sport spectrum is widely varied. There are those that compete to win, and there are those that compete for fun. Ernie Bauer masters the river.
