The SBW Chapter of Quill CS Scroll of Crossett, Arkansas Presents a Pictorial Iournal THE TERMITE GP CRCDSSETT HIGH SCHOOLS l96O 'Expedition to and Through Shg1qgrj-I-gl -- The New High School iz 2 Crossett's Former High School - Present Iunior High h ,-fl 'N-X CROSSETTS NEW 55685000 SENIOR HIGH SCHOQI The actual iourney to the new school - the preparation we had in the former Crossett High School - plays a maior role in the complete expedition to and through Shangri-La. Without it a portion of our pursuit for knowledge and ac- tivities would have been omitted from our pictorial review The Junior High School is also included in our story in pic- tures, for they, too, will eventually make a similar trip. Even though the climax of our iourney was reaching our destination, we feel the trip would have been less exciting without recording it from beginning to end. History of the Crossett Termite SEVENTEEN oRossETT TERMITE ,f VOLUMES OP Q 57 W W4 -.gb Just as we were busy preparing to further Crossett High School history in March T960 by moving into Shangri-La, twenty years earlier a staff of thirteen students were preparing also to add something to CHS's future fthe first TERMlTEl All the work on this 65 page mimeographed first was done at the old green school under sponsor Miss Bernice Woodward and was dedicated to Mr. D, C. Hastings, first superintendent of Crossett Schools, The graduating class that year was the largest ever-thirty-nine! During the early War years, T943-44, CHS had no TERMITE. The T945 edition was dedicated to those former students who were involved in World War ll. The first printed TERMITE appeared in l95l, the year after the move into the new high school, This, the eighteenth edition of THE TERMITE also has a historical featureftwo generations have now worked as staff members. Mr. Billy Rawls, art editor of the i942 TERMITE, and his wife who was Ruth Powell co-editor of the same volume, are the parents of Glenda Rawls, T960 staff member. ln fact, two genera- tions have worked on this book since Glenda's father deserves credit for several pages of art work in this your T960 TERMITE. The CHS yearbook has had only one sponsore-Mrs. Bernice Woodward Crawford! 5 Mr W B. Anderson, Mr. William C. Norman, SupT. M. H. Russell, Mr. John Henry Allen Mr. Lexie Woods, and Dr. William Harville. Every successful expediTion musT have planners who map The iourney's paTh and Then see To iT ThaT Their plan is Tol- lowed. Our EXPEDITION TO AND THROUGH SHANGRI-LA had such a group of men working and planning Toward The reaching of our desTinaTion. Norman, president, Mr. John Henry Allen, vice president, Mr. Lexie Woods, and Dr. William Harville. They play a major role in supervising Crossett's complete school system and deserve a large portion of the credit for Crossett's fine educational program. Crossett's Junior High School was voted to be named after Wm. C. Norman, general manager of the Crossett Company. It was pointed out that the Norman name has long been associated with the progress and growth of Ashley County and Crossett. Both Mr. Norman and his father contributed greatly to the develop- ment of our school system. This room contains twenty booths equipped with cushioned earphones, micro- phones, and controls for recording and playing back languages both recorded and spoken. The laboratory includes a maior console control where the teacher can talk with one or all of the students or relay direct recordings or tapes to individual booths, a group, or all the compartments. Federal Funds through the National Defense Educational Act provided fifty per cent of the initial cost. The atmosphere created by the booths establishes a new interest in learning on the part of the students and aids them considerably in learning to pronounce and speak languages fluently. This new laboratory aids teachers in testing students orally. fig' !7 'fF'5i ? 'V' 'K ' Government and American History Cembine to make CI better citizen ' ' - Mah..-.-.,?.. Diversified Education deals with the various aspects of selling. By dealing di- rectly with the customers of the firm, the trainee puts into practice the theory learned in the classroom. This theory is taught to the group and includes such things as salesmanship, advertising, and buying. Diversified occupation offers training in the trades or crafts. The classroom work is on an individual basis. The instructor, Mr. Billings, guides the students rather than attempting to teach them. On our T960 expedition of progress we left by the .way our building no,-J Wrh C. Norrnan Junior High which had served as Crossett High School for ten years. The four hundred and tfventy-eight students taking this progressive step found a spacious 5600000 structure at the iourney's end. The new educational center contains 53,300 square feet of floor space divided into four zones. Zones one and two house the quiet subiectsn such as science, English, rnath, and social science. The library is between the two zones. In zone three are the rnusic roofns, study hall and cafeteria. The sound sys- tem in the principaI's office connects each room, and notices or even music can be sent to the entire school, one zone, or one room. The ceilings of the halls, library, and study hall are tiled with sound absorbing material. All the shelves in the building are adiustable, and there are 648 pink lockers. At the front entrance are tvvo trophy cases and a planter, others are scat- tered throughout the building. Shangri-La has a capacity for 650 students, plans for room expansion are pro- vided for so that another building vvill not be needed. ln addition to the seventeen general classrooms, the classes in science, art, music, home economics, speech therapy, and foreign languages all have special equipment.
