F00 LL Varsit Comes On Strong The Cross Keys Football Team opened its season with an exciting 6-3 win over Clarkston. The game ended with Cross Keys having to make a goal line stand on its six inch line. Randy Ledford had a fine game at linebacker, and for his efforts, he was chosen linebacker of the week by the Dekalb County Touchdown Club. The Clarkston victory was followed by three tough losses to Columbia, Decatur, and Towers. Cross Keys played a state ranked Columbia team very close, but wound up losing 12-0. The next week found Decatur and CK locked up in a 7-7 struggle midway through the third quarter before Decatur broke loose for three quick touchdowns. Following the disappointing 27-7 loss to Decatur, Cross Keys rebounded with a great effort against a very good Towers team. Trailing 7-0 late in the fourth quarter, the CK offense stayed a sixty yards scoring drive that made the score 7-6 with two minutes left in the game. Electing to go for two on the extra point try, Mark Windom found Kirk Linder in the endzone, and Cross Keys was ahead by an 8-7 score. The lead proved to be short-lived, though, as Towers was able to come back and score with thirty nine seconds on the clock to pull out a 14-8 victory over CK. Druid Hills was next in line for the Indians, and CK responded with a big 28-10 victory. The offense gained over 300 yards on the ground against the Red Devils. Leading the rushing attack for CK were Steve Anthony and Kevin Barge. Billy Price had an outstanding game in the offensive line, and was awarded offensive lineman of the week by the Dekalb County Touchdown Club. The next week proved costly to Cross Keys. After leading 10-0 at the half against Roswell, the defense allowed three second half touchdowns, and Cross Keys wound up losing 21-16. Even more damaging, however, was the loss of fullback- Iinebacker Carlos Aragon for the rest of the year due to a knee injury. Cross Keys began its sub-region contests against powerful Chamblee. The Bulldogs, the fifth ranked team in the state, proved too much for the Indians as they hammered out a 37-0 victory. ln its second sub-region game, Cross Keys faced an improved St. Pius ballclub. A couple of long touchdown passes led St. Pius to a 21-7 victory over CK. The Indians fought back with impressive wins over Briarcliff and Sequoyah, outscoring both opponents rather handily. With the season over and the equipment locked away, people can be proud as they remember a young, inexperienced team, its first head coach, and the impressive battles they fought both on and off the field. 30 il , ,, Ag, , rv- I ..g I' 1 Z , 1 i , 2 , , X 5 X ,f V 9 wwf 7 'aa' 'lm , , K' ff. They've gotten up early in the morning on Saturdays to cheer at the 8th grade football games. In addition to making run throughs for the football players, they've also performed at a pep rally. Most of the girls use their experience towards making the Jr. Varsity and Varsity Squads. ,as- V My .k sm f E gt ' S h w .
