Should women be drafted? That was a major question for 1980. Gasoline was around a dollar and fifteen cents for regular and much more for premium, but the high price didn't keep very many off the roads. Mount St. Helens, a Volcano in Washington State, gave everyone a surprise by many exciting eruptions. 1980 was a super year and a great way to enter a new decade. 1980, just like every other year had its history making events, its births and deaths. We lost greats like Mae West, the legendary sex symbol of the thirties and forties. We lost Steve McQueen, the outstanding movie idol who will be remembered in such movies as Papillon, Bullitt, and The Sand Pebbles. John Lennon was shot and killed this year. Lennon, one of the original Beatles, helped in shaping and making Rock-n-Roll what it is today. These outstanding personalities will be remembered as the greats they were and for the contributions they made to the entertain- ment field. dul-

Fifty-two Americans were held hostage in Iran because of the United States' support of the Shah. This was the year those Georgia Bulldogs were H1 and went to the Sugar Bowl. 1980 was also the year our Atlanta Falcons had the best season they'd had in a long time and were on their way to the playoffs and maybe-??? The Superbowl? 1980 was an election year in which the Republicans made a clean sweep. Georgia's own Jimmy Carter lost to former movie star and Republican, Ronald Reagan. The major movies were Star Wars, Kramer vs. Kramer, Urban Cowboy, and the movie stars mwwmww Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep were joined by robots C3P0 and R2D2 and Yoda. Believe it or not, some of the biggest stars were Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Animal, and Fozzy bear, all of which are Muppets fa type of puppetj made famous by Sesame Street ia chiIdren's showj, and then they went on to star in the Muppet Movie. The music? This was the year for punk. Devo and the B-52's were big. Those who didn't care for new wave still had Jackson Brown, Linda Ronstadt, the Doobie Brothers and, for a little country, Kenny Rogers.
