Cross Keys basketball-playing Indians surged for- ward and took the Region 4-AAA Tournament like a tidal wave, surprising the exj)erts by defeating the favored teams to win first place. The nest weekend, baffling authorities again, Coach Franks tribe earned the nickname iron men by proving themselves to be almost undefeatable. The team certainly looked better than any other new school has ever looked in the tournament, and probably aroused more school spirit from Cross Keysians than had ever before been shown. At the Alexander Memorial Colosseum, the redmen first massacred Benedictine of Savannah, 61-43, and moved on to defeat Marist 54-46. In the semi-finals the Indians scalped Warner Robins 77-54, playing their best game of the season. It vas during this game that the Cross Keys ball club established an over-all State Tournament record of scoring on 68 per cent of shots from the floor: 32 of 47 shots hit their mark. The starting fi e Indian players, for the most part responsible for this percentage record, all have practical- ly the same average amount of points per game, which proves the team to be an exceptionally w ell-balanced one. Three of these warriors were chosen for the All-State basketball team: this is more than any other school had on the team in this tournament. Harry Kitchens, 6 7 center, the only Senior on the team. Doug Alex- ander, 5 ' 11 guard, dubbed the little pla Tnaker by sportscaster Al Ciraldo, and Dick Waters, 6 ' 3 fonvard, were the three members of the Cross Keys team chosen for this honor. Although the last game of the tournament was lost to Lagrange and the Indians came out with second place in the state, the first three games of the tourna- ment were so admirable, and coached so well that the Atlanta Tip-Off Club has named Cross Keys Coach Fred Franks Greater Atlanta Tip-Off Club Coach of the Year. Congratulations to Coach Franks for winning this Avell-deserved award, and to the Indian team for their excellent playing. Although this year was a fine one for the team. Coach Franks and his assistant Coach Williams speculate thai next vear wUl be an even better one for the Indians. 75

The 1962-63 Girls ' Basketball season was the best in the history of Cross Keys. Under the excellent coaching of Miss Barineau the girls ended their season with 15 wins and 8 losses. The three senior forwards. Nina Holland, Jackie Tennant and Lynn Maddox, due to their experience, led the team through the first part of the season : how- ever as the season progressed, the defense, led by Joan Black, a junior, Maxine De- metros, a sophomore, and Glenda Chism, a senior, improved and in many cases carried the team to its victory.
