Bob S Xin id (MM, f. en ,a W) -V ' Mjt-- it .-i - z ' 4 CROSS KEYS HIGH SCHOOL iJ ATLANTA, GEORGIA Ralph W. Brandon Principal Max DeVane Asst. Principal Jim Cherry Superintendent VOLUME IV ' I TABLE OF CONTENTS ORGANIZATIONS 90 CLASSES 148 THIS IS CROSS KEYS 1963 . . . It is a composite picture of your activ- ities, important events, friends and class- mates and most important of all, the whole spirit and character that have made this year different from any other. There is no other theme or purpose to the 1963 CHIEFTAIN than to represent Cross Keys and this year so completely and carefully that it will always bring to mind your most important memories. You are Cross Keys and this is your book, pre- sented by the staff with the hope that it truly portrays a year of your life here. Sincerely, Edith Agnew Editor-in-chief With the coming of a new school year many changes begin to take place. Out of doors the trees gradually turn from a cool dark green to a warm orange and red. As the leaves fall to the ground the ivhole xvorld takes on a new look of life. So it is at Cross Keys . . . changes take place not only in the at- mosphere of Cross Keys, but in the administration. Mr. Ralph Brandon, our new principal, comes to us this year bringing with him many new ideas. Each year Cross Keys is engulfed in a completely different atmosphere and spirit. This year due to our conflict with Russia over Cuba, students seem to realize the need for a good education, but they also feel the necessity for living and enjoying every moment of life. This is Cross Keys 1963 . . . ' A. . ■- irt DEDICATION For five years the basic rules of mathe- matics and a deeper understanding of life have been the inheritance of those students who have attended the classes of this out- standing person. Although a prominent leader in the com- munity and active in the DeKalb Ekluca- tion Association and her church choir, she takes a personal interest in each student. During her years here at Cross Keys, she has received the appreciation and admira- tion of all the people who have come into contact with her. Always ready to give of her time and her knowledge, she is deeply concerned with the character development as well as the mental education of her students. Because of her brilliant mind, her warm character, and her deep love for others, we, the 1963 CHIEFTAIN staff, dedicate this annual to Mrs. Mary K. Chappell. MRS. MARY K. CHAPPELL 10 ACADEMIC LIFE II FACULTY PROMOTES STUDENT IN ACADEMIC Eighty-nine teachers of the highest possible caliber instruct Cross Keys High School students in everything from poetic philosophies to physical education. These teachers form many lasting friendships with their students as they strive not only to teach them, but also to prepare them for their futures as contributing members of society. 12 INTEREST LIFE 13 Assistant Principal: DR. MAX DeVANE Davidson College, B.S. Peabody College, M.A. Florida State Univ., Ed. D. Mr. Brandon enjoys an interesting speaker. Dr. DeVane and Mr. Brandon confer at assembly. 14 NEW PRINCIPAL ASSURES SCHOOL ' S CONTINUED PROGRESS Coaches question Dr. De ane. Mr. Ralph Brandon has gained the respect and admiration of each student in his first year here as principal. Guiding the school with a kind but firm hand, he has maintained discipline and order throughout Cross Kevs. Without the help of the assistant prin- cipal. Dr. Max DeVane, the job of principal would be almost unbearable. Not only does Dr. DeVane handle disciplinary problems. he is also in charge of public relations be- tween parents and teachers, supervises extra-curricular activities, and teaches two classes in American Historv. Although each of these men is busy performing the many duties of his posi- tion, both find time to show a sincere inter- est not only in the school as a whole, but also in the welfare of each individual student. Dr. DeVane discusses bus schedules. Mrs. Margaret Ohrtmann Secretary EVERY PHASE OF IS AIDED BY THE Work in an office is never easy and many times seems to never end. However, under the leadership of the school secre- tary, Mrs. Margaret Ohrtmann, the office operates efficiently and effectively. Mrs. Ohrtinann, although having been here only one year, knows many students and faculty members as friends, as well as mere ac- quaintances. Mi . Frances Reynolds Bookkeeper Mrs. Reynolds checks records with Mr. Boland. Although Mrs. Frances Reynolds, book keeper at Cross Keys, has a fulltime job handling the funds and expenditures of the school and the many organizations within the school, she is a true friend to each student at Cross Kevs. With patience and understanding she works with many club treasurers and sponsors to keep ac- curate records of club funds. 16 SCHOOL LIFE THE WORK OF ADMINISTRATION All too often the jobs of Mrs. Whitehead and Mrs. Alexander, the lunchroom super- visors, are underestimated. Providing a nutritious as well as tasty lunch for two thousand students requires much expe- rience, planning and thought. Both of these women, with the help of the many lunch- room workers, keep the cafeteria operating smoothly throughout the year. Lunchroom worker opens a package. Mrs. Marie Alexander Lunchroom Supervisor Mrs. Whitehead places an order. 17 f MRS. JULIA PRICH ' ' ' - ' f ARCHIBALD University of Georgia, B.A.Ed. These problems require deep thought which in turn develops reasoning power. Math is necessary in everyday life as well as in the application of principles in scientific research. Preparation for these practical uses of mathematics is obtained through courses in general math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus, which are taught by well trained and de- voted teachers. Through frequent practices and performances the band and chorus have reached a new height of perfection. Home economics is be- coming more important in preparing girls for their future roles as homemakers. Some regard it with thoughts of serious study, while others are intrigued with the social activities. To new students it is the beginning of a new world, while to others it is the opportunity to achieve greater eoals. 34 Although fall is emphasized by serious study, students still seem to have fun. The football season leads up to the Homecoming game. This year Homecoming centers around pep rallies — featuring the Cross Keys Indian, and the anxious excitement as students watch the game and wonder who will be Queen. 36 37 38 As the newness of the school year begins to wear off, the routine is interrupted by Christmas with all of its frenzied excitement and good cheer. Now, not only s tudies occupy the time, but the rivalry of designing the best door decoration and the final preparations for the Christmas assembly. During the last few minutes of school the Christmas trees are planted, and the holiday officially begins. 39 40 1 Despite midwinterblues, students always manage to find little bits of excitement to cheer their lives. An especially eventful occasion is the Miss Cross Keys contest. For weeks ahead of time the girls practice walking, pivoting, and their individual talent. Many hours are spent on talent alone, ranging from monologues to comical dances to classical ballets. While contestants await the contest with tense hope, students await it with excitement and wonder. The judging over, contestants and students feel relieved and happy. 41 For the first time Cross Keys entered a one-act play in the State competition. Due to the hard work of the cast and the wonderful direction of Mrs. Peggy Childs and Mr. Tom Langston the play won first place in the region and third in the State. Not only did the cast devote much of its time to the play, but the stage crew also worked hard and did a tremendous job. The cast included — The Man Terry Hoffman The Crippled One Paul Taylor The Sailor Randy Hester First Sentry John Simms Second Sentry Leslie Bonner Old Woman Donna White The Girl Pat Hendrix, Anne McCormick 42 J n 43 Although students have varied extra-curricular activities, they do not overlook the responsibility of learning. Book reports, lab reports, English themes, science projects, parallel reading, term papers, and news reports are only a part of the praise-worthy scholastic program. I 44 45 46 At Cross Keys sports are not forgotten after football season ends. Students continue to cheer their wrestling and basketball teams on to victory after victory after victory. The never-ending pep and enthusiasm of the crowd helps to spark the teams ' visor. 47 48 Students find time for moments of serious discussion and for moments of carefree fun despite their active schedules. Days are crowded with thoughts of will we win the next game? , will I pass my algebra test? , and what will I do? . Students find their lives filled with toils and pleasures. 49 As the year begins to come to an end students try to enjoy all of the remaining events. Yet their thoughts wander to memories of the past year and to the promise of the future. Not only do activities fill their time, but they try to make a final atterript to puU up their grades. 50 51 II 52 The end of the year affects people in various ways. Underclassmen anticipate the lazy summer days, while juniors look forward to the excitement of becoming big seniors. The seniors, however, fill their last days with fun-filled antics trying to hide the note of sadness that is sometimes felt. After school is out Cross Keys 1963 can never be recaptured. 53 54 SPORTS 55 INDIAN SEASON MAKES CROSS KEYS Football games have become an im- portant part of every Cross Keys student ' s activities. Attendance at our games, home and away, is always loyal and enthusiastic. Through the past season our reputation for good sportsmanship and honor has been carried through each and every game. Guided by qualified coaches and inspired by rousing cheers, Cross Keys ' Varsity team has maintained a very good record for this year. The pep and rousing enthusiasm that the cheerleaders display seems to spread rapidly through the spectators at pep rallies and games. The Cross Keys cheerleaders must not only be vivacious enough to do jumps and splits; they must also maintain above- average scholastic standings and high standards of conduct. Our B Team echoes the good sportsmanship that has been shown so outstandingly by the Varsity team. The Cross Keys B Team cheerleaders have helped to spur the boys towards victory at every game. Their never ending willingness and eager- to-please attitude are appreciated and admired by the entire student body. Eighth grade football helps to train the future B Team and Varsity players. This Cross Keys team has an excellent record for such a young inexperienced team. 65 PRECISION ROUTINES MARK THE EFFORTS OF THE DRILL TEAM At Cross Keys football games the halftime is brightened by a { erforniance from the Cross Keys Drill Team. Under the guidance of their sponsor, Miss Jennie Wren, and Captain Sue Eason, these girls execute routines that show the excellent re- sults of time-consuming practice, blended with a natural knack for keeping in step. Surely the entire student body of Cross Keys realizes the time and effort that goes into one performance, and it is proud of the job our Drill Team does. 66 RANK ONE Marclif Hughes Joy Varnell Linda Butler Sally Johnson Jane McAfee Carol Woods Katy Hall WMtMM sys s mSSSSSSSSmS BSSSSM ■i MW I I R SRHmR f l fesS ■■S BH B EiB H K mSm PBiy tBmBM ' TmBBK vBsa ■■bS S k I 5S3 55ai ■MJmBBM I MM B B|H HHBpB B HBS WBfl V I y H PB J Bfl HI I jH pB H S K M § W S L K 1 BHH T 1S« BiJ jbH jB a Jii M 4L s. The members of the Cross Keys band practice diligently every day to perfect their rhythm, technique, and marching routines. They play at the half-time of every football game and at most of the assemblies. They usually have two concerts during the year and participate in parades. MAJORETTES HI-LIGHT C.K. HALFTIME Throughout the year the Majorettes have many activities in which to participate that the great majority of Cross Keys students do not know about. Aside from marching with the band at football games and twirling at assemblies, they perform with the band in the Spring Festival and in parades. Cross Keys can well be proud of its Majorettes, for they are hard workers whose finished product has gained them prestige. 70 GYMNASTICS QUICKLY GAIN STUDENT SUPPORT With the organization of our Gymnastics Team, Cross Keys is well on its way toward having a well rounded sports program. Sur- prising authorities and experts, the team has come from behind to the First place in region 4-AAA. Experience, diligent practice, height, and determination to win spurred by their attentive coach are factors that have made the team a great one. Regardless of the final score the Indians will play a game well worth seeing. The player with his head highest in the clouds, Harry Kitchens, is the only senior on the team and will graduate in the spring. Still Coach Franks feels that because a of the members of the team have concen- trated on teamwork, Cross Keys will have an outstanding team again in the 1963-64 season. The nest weekend, baffling authorities again, Coach Franks tribe earned the nickname iron men by proving themselves to be almost undefeatable. The team certainly looked better than any other new school has ever looked in the tournament, and probably aroused more school spirit from Cross Keysians than had ever before been shown. At the Alexander Memorial Colosseum, the redmen first massacred Benedictine of Savannah, 61-43, and moved on to defeat Marist 54-46. In the semi-finals the Indians scalped Warner Robins 77-54, playing their best game of the season. It vas during this game that the Cross Keys ball club established an over-all State Tournament record of scoring on 68 per cent of shots from the floor: 32 of 47 shots hit their mark. The starting fi e Indian players, for the most part responsible for this percentage record, all have practical- ly the same average amount of points per game, which proves the team to be an exceptionally w ell-balanced one. Three of these warriors were chosen for the All-State basketball team: this is more than any other school had on the team in this tournament. Harry Kitchens, 6 7 center, the only Senior on the team. Doug Alex- ander, 5 ' 11 guard, dubbed the little pla Tnaker by sportscaster Al Ciraldo, and Dick Waters, 6 ' 3 fonvard, were the three members of the Cross Keys team chosen for this honor. Although the last game of the tournament was lost to Lagrange and the Indians came out with second place in the state, the first three games of the tourna- ment were so admirable, and coached so well that the Atlanta Tip-Off Club has named Cross Keys Coach Fred Franks Greater Atlanta Tip-Off Club Coach of the Year. Congratulations to Coach Franks for winning this Avell-deserved award, and to the Indian team for their excellent playing. Although this year was a fine one for the team. Coach Franks and his assistant Coach Williams speculate thai next vear wUl be an even better one for the Indians. 75 GIRLS ' VARSITY TEAM SITTIMG, left to right: Jajiie Middleton, Glenda Chism, Jackie Tennant, Nina Holland, Lou Alexander, Tommie Rice. STANDING, left to right: Manager: Lorraine Harper, Lynn Maddox, Joan Black, Betty Miller, Jane Puckett, Maxine Demetros, Donna Adams, Jene Woods, Jere Woods, Manager: Marian Gibson. The 1962-63 Girls ' Basketball season was the best in the history of Cross Keys. Under the excellent coaching of Miss Barineau the girls ended their season with 15 wins and 8 losses. Wres- tling is fast becoming one of the most popular sports at Cross Keys and runs a close second to Basketball as the highlight of the winter sports scene. Governed by stiff training rules and tough prac- tice sessions, the boys push toward gaining the state championship they unwillingly lost to Briarcliff last year. The majority of the matmen have experience in their favor this year as well as that all important element — strength. Each member of the team has done an excellent job this year in contributing points to the score for another Cross Keys victory. ( - . SITTING, left to right: John Pastor, Kerry Mock. Mike Casper. COMPETITION CHALLENGES C.K. TRACK TEAM For the first time in the 5-year history of Cross Keys the track team is gifted with plenty of depth as well as width. With Felton Lancaster, Mike Whitworth and Rusty Ragsdale leading the team as cap- tains, the boys are improving greatly and should be very successful in AAA compe- tition. According to Coach James Castell, who adds humor as well as hard work to the practice sessions, the team is a very likely one for state honors in the 1963 season. A staff member learns to accept general panic as a matter of course! The CHIEFTAIN staff, however, is an enthusiastic group of people, and it gen- uinely enjoys its work, and that makes the worry, tears, and frenzy worthwhile. The sponsor, Miss Baldwin, although new at annual business, also spent many precious Saturdays at school working. The most important member, however, is the wonderful photographer, Rodney Hilton, whose work cannot be measured in mere hours. Programs given by experienced travelers or by citizens of foreign lands are fascinating to the large group of students who are members of these clubs. Latin students discover by means of films and special programs, the value of studying the ancient Romans. Both past and present French students take pleasure in programs emphasizing life in France, and the French culture. The rich variety of topics to be found in Spain are brought out in the lively meetings of the Spanish Club. Newest of the Language Clubs is that made up of German students. German songs, history and its present posi- tion in the world are a part of this club ' s programs. The other court beauties included Penny McClesky, Diane Arnold, Elaine Paysour, Judy Hurley, Tv Lattimer. Teri Cadwell. and Sandra Blalock. 127 L)nir eu Carder and ' Jxodneu Jii ion During Citizenship Week, through informative speech- es, inspirational devotionals, and patriotic bulletin hoards, the Student Council aims toward building a stronger appreciation of our heritage, among the stu- dents. The climax of the week comes with the announce- ment of the school ' s Best Citizens, as chosen by the fac- ulty and student body on the basis of patriotism, hon- esty, and school participation. This year Shirley Carder and Rodney Hilton were selected as the Senior Best Citizens. Shirley and Rodney are truly deserving of this honor for they not only dis- play ideal citizenship but they also contribute to various school activities, such as Student Council and Chieftain Staff. Representatives from the other classes eleven through eight respectively are: Sheryl Kittle, Joe Dahm, Betty Bowers, John Balkcom, Barbara Block, Tommy Fields, Diane Arnold, and Pat McKinney. 128 129 jKr. This year each class chose two representatives and in a general election, Sonny Bellinger was selected as Mr. Cross Keys. 1963. Sonny ' s quick smile and easy personality have made him well liked by Cross Keys students and his active participation in sports and organiza- tions have made him one of the most outstand- ing Seniors. The other boys from their respec- tive classes are as follows: John Ramsey. Johnny Balkcom, Ricky Hughes, Ricky Jones, Bruce Edmonds, Tim Bice, Rusty Ragsdale, Don Lloyd, and Tony Griggs. 131 132 jJiosi Uersa ne cS, onn ' y 7)e A ' inaer y Coming from the scope of the Senior class of 1963 is an outstanding personality, Sonny Bellinger. Prominent as Senior Class Presi- dent, Treasurer of Student Council, Varsity star in both football and baseball, the students and faculty of Cross Keys chose him as their candidate for the Optimist Club Most Versatile Award. Well respected by his fellow class- mates, Sonny was truly deserving of this high honor. ar Q uden An outstanding member of the Senior Class is chosen each year to represent the school as its Star Student. The honor is based on the highest college board scores coupled with an equally high record at school. Donna Anderton, this year ' s Star Student, certainly deserves this award for she is not only an exceptional student, but she is also Captain of the Debate Team, member of Beta Club, a National Merit Finalist, and Editor-in-Chief of the Key- word. Donna has selected Mrs. Mary K. Chap- pell as the teacher who, through encour- agement and guidance, has influenced her the greatest during her years at Cross Keys. 2) onna ncferk erton 133 JKiss 7) 9? Each year the DAR Citizenship Award is presented to a Senior girl on the basis of school participation, scholastic ability, and outstanding citizenship. Sue Long, one of our most prominent seniors, was selected as this year ' s Miss DAR. Throughout her high school career, Sue has been involved in all phases of school life, as a leader and an intellectual. Elected as a superlative for the past four years, she served as Prom Chairman during her Junior year and Vice-President of the Student Council the same year. This year, although much of her time is devoted to her work as President of the Council, Sue still finds time for membership in Beta Club, Math Club, French Club, as well as being a senior editor on the CHIEFTAIN Staff. 134 yCah ' onal JKerii Jin a is is In the spring of the junior year, students have the opportunity to take the National Merit Tests in compe- tition with other students all over the nation. After grading eliminations, semi-finalists and finally finalists are announced and these finalists become contenders for a scholarship to the school of their choice. Cross Keys is most fortunate to have three finalists representing our school in this program. Donna Anderton, Allen Park, and Steve Campbell are truly exceptional seniors, not only respected for their scholastic abilities but also for their contributions to school activities. WHITE JIMMY ZACHARY 236 JANETTE CECILE UPSHAW F.H.A. 1 ENID BOLDING SENIOR LIFE Each student strives for the year when he will be a senior, someone who is looked to as an example for guidance by under- classmen. This year comes very soon, but the respect and admiration desired come only after a true effort on the part of each senior to show the qualities of leadership and the acceptance of responsibility. The Senior Class of 1963 has reached this goal throuah the complete effort of each student and the help of inany teachers who have also become friends through the years. As these Seniors near graduation and the end of a year which has been filled with fun and laughter combined with study, they prepare to accept a more responsible role, some at college, some in business, and some beginning homes of their own. These Seniors are striving for the key of success, but they are the key of the future. 237 238 THE BRISK SPIRIT AND SERIOUS STUDY OF THE SENIOR CLASS SPREADS TO UNDERCLASSMEN 239 With the close of the year comes the end of many things. No longer can the students live their carefree lives; they have to accept the responsibilities of the coming year. Yet to the seniors the end of the year is especially memorable. They are closing the high school world behind them, but the promise of a new and exciting world is awaiting them when they reach for it. When the seniors look back they will not see a school dimly lit in the background, they will see a shining light in their past. This light, a symbol of life, growth, and learning, will never be forgotten for it will bring to mind memories both happy and sad. 240 3iBB Jne Cncf 241 FACULTY AlexandtT, Marif. 17 Anderson, Mary. 26. 194 Archibald, Julia, 18, 110 Ashe, Ann. 24 Bakor, John, 30. 88 Baldwin, Anne, 22. 101 Barineau.
