'4 775 The founding fathers of public education in Texas envisioned the day when Texas would show the world that we will not only be the Empire State in point of territory, but also in the number and excellence of our institutions of learning. This goal, expressed by a group of citi- zens in a mass meeting at the State Capitol one hundred years ago, is especially challenging today. Remember the little old red schoolhouse? There have been plenty of changes, many improvements, but there is still room for more. The schools have taught us to enjoy the benefits of democracy and to be good citizens. Out of these schools have come the leaders in govern- ment, finance, literature, sports, education, and so on. Every generation inherits certain obligations, ours is no exception. We have inherited good schools. fi is our obligation to make them better for our posterity. Let's prove that Texans not only have big hats, but big hearts and big minds as well,
