Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1980 volume:

Music Will Keep Us Together Whenever I hear that song 1 think of you. Your special smile, carefree laughter and helping hand has helped me through many a day. We’re probably not always going to be together. Our lives will take us down two different roads, but I’ll always remember you, because we are friends. When I hear that song I think of all the fun things we’ve done together. Remember the basketball games, parties, shows, and just cruising up and down main street. Memories are life’s greatest treasure, thanks for all of them that you’ve given me. Music always brings back the memories — And we want this annual to bring back as many memories — because music will keep us together. I Don't Like Mondays The alarm keeps ringing incessantly in ■y ear, I reach up to shut it off and knock it on the floor, I peer over the side of my bed and see that the glass has shattered all over the carpet. I lay back and stare at the ceiling and mutter “I don’t like Mondays.” I lay in my cozy bed and listen to the radio, praying that school has been can- celled. Blizzards, fire, blocked roads of bus breakdowns, I can’t say that I’m fussy, but alas I arrive at school — on time??? I stumble down the hall bumping into three freshmen. I pull open my locker — ducking as my books come crashing down on top of me. Some (§ ! •! person has stacked my locker, after picking up the ■ess I go to my first class and fall into my chair — glad I’m part of DC’s classes. 1 SENIORS 1980 Pres. Michele W„ V. Pres. We open our classroom doors and dash to the lounge for that last cup of coffee. We talk among ourselves about the terri- ble time the kids give us — and how we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves if it wasn't for the kids. The kids can be rough on us but we’ve got you under our thumb because we’re the faculty. FACULTY Marilyn Johnson — English Bill Strasser — Business Lee Lampert — Vo. Ag. Charles Guthrie — Drivers Ed. We can't get anything done without meetings. Yeah... I know, we can't have it during class time. We'll have to have it tomorrow noon. You can't have a meeting without time. “Where are all the members? What kind of an organization is this?! You can’t plan an activity without people! “Mr. Cowley, we’ve decided to have a dance. Yes, we've got chaperones and ticket takers and we’ll make posters. What? We don’t have enough money? Yeah... I know, you can’t have a dance without enough money to cover for a loss. You think we should have a fund raising pro- ject? Great!” “Can I set up a meeting for our organiza- tion ...” 25 ANNUAL STAFF The Maroon Memoirs annual staff consists of seventeen talented, energetic, and loyal members fully devoted to one endeavor — pre- paring the best annual we possibly can. We can't get anything done in here. Everytime we stop singing you start talking, it’s automatic. Now please BE QUIET! Play that part right. We’ve gone over it at least ten times. If you’d take your horns home and practice once in awhile, we could get a few things done. Why do I go through this? Because I know that he has to get on us so we sound good. It sure is great when we put it all together and get a star at contest. It’s great to be involved in DC music. 35 CHOIR First row, 1-r: D. Roberts, B. Bacon, W. Schwanz. L. Moe, D. Haugland, S. Of course screwing up means double maroon drills, but we have learned to expect it. The big game finally comes around and what do we hear — an irate coach yelling from the bench, “Don’t pick your nose out there!” There is nothing like a 6:00 a.m. football practice with 40 up-downs at three differen intervals to make you wonder what you are doing out here. Stretchers and ambulances waiting by the gate are always an inspira- tion. Then there is the familiar sight of Assistant Coach Lampert dragging the medical kit across the field (note — caught on page 44). The miles of running for track through snow, rain and wind are always great. Aftei awhile the beautiful North Dakota scenery is imprinted in your mind. Shin splints are often your reward for all this work, and to start off the year there is nothing like a good sunburn to get you into real pain. But we love it, and we keep coming bad because the thrill of victory and the agony of de-feet are all part of DC’s athletics. 43 VARSITY FOOTBALL First row, 1-r: L. Unhjem, T. Olson, B. Elsbcrnd, D. Their spirit and enthusiasm really helped when the girls needed it the most and even when they didn’t. You always knew our cheerleaders because of their long gray coats and assortment of hats and we will always remember their “We’re going to get you” shirts. And DC will never forget the boys’ floor cheer, “Rah.” And their “Pour on the pressure” when the boys demonstrated with their hats. L-r: Greg Mosser. The guys demonstrated a lot of sportsmanship and worked hard through all the practices and games. Their work was rewarded by placing third in the Estevan tourney. They were coached by Charles Guthrie. 52 BOYS’ “C” BASKETBALL Gary Molander did an excellent job of coaching this young team through a terrific season with a majority of wins. The evening games brought Noonan winning over Columbus and Tioga over Bowbells. Thursday afternoon was high- lighted with Burke Central defeating Powers Lake and Bowbells defeating Columbus, that evening Divide County was victorious over Flaxton and Tioga over Noonan. Friday evening brought loser’s night with Noo- nan beating Burke Central and Flaxton over Bowbells. Championship night Flaxton beat Noonan giving them a chance to challenge Tioga, after Divide County took District 26 Championship 64 to 52. Due to closeness of votes this year on the All Tourney I earn there was 11 players named instead of the usual 10. DC was proud to claim three from this group. Joel Wigginton tied for the top spot with Faron Ehlke, Tim Mosser and Norm Han- son were also named for the team. Burke Central and Tioga tied for the spirit award. Flaxton beat Tioga in the challenge game, earning a chance to go to regionals for the first time. March 10 found DC and Flaxton in regional action in Williston. 59 REGION 7 TOURNAMENT Region 7 Basketball Tournament took place in Williston. ND. The Divide County Maroons took home the third place pla- que, first regional trophy taken in boys' basketball by Coach Haggin. The Maroons were victorious over the Beulah Miners, but were beaten by the New Town Eagles, which went on to take first place. DC then finished third after beating the Flaxton Raid- ers. 60 We’ve Got Tonight After sitting around all afternoon waiting for the big night to come, I glance up at the clock to see that I now have only a few short minutes to get ready. I jump up from my chair and rush to the bathroom to take a shower and see that my little sister is in there taking a bath because she wants to go over to a friend’s. Of course now every- thing is going wrong — my socks don’t match and my clothes have some foreign substance glued to them. The laces on my shoes are broken and the car won’t start. After finally getting myself to where I’m going, I stop and say, “Self, why do you put up with this?” Self always answers me back, “Because you love it and its all part of being in DCs activities.” 60 HOMECOMING This year it was decided that each class should put on a skit instead of the traditional “dress- up” week. The pep rally was held at the bonfire with a snake dance through town following it, but even with that amount of spirit we were defeated by the Tioga Pirates. The band for this year’s homecoming was “Genuine Wiz- ard,” and our king and queen were Steve Selle and Jana Sten- son. 62 King Steve Selle and Queen Jana Stenson Second Place — Sophomores 63 Candidates: 1-r: Lori Windfaldet, Rhonda Lund, Liz Nordstog. The exceptional weather this spring brought an early and spectacular season, especially for the DCHS golfers. This year’s golf team consisted of 11 players, under the compe- tent coaching of Mr. Bruce Morlock. The team partici- pated in the following tour- neys, and won the following places: Portal — 2nd, Tioga — 4th, and Kenmare — 3rd. The regionals were held in Mohall where DCHS took first, and the conference was held in Stanley where Crosby left with the fifth place, they came in 7th out of 11 teams at Parshall. 65 TRACK The highlight of the the track season was the state qualification of Greg Oien in the shot put. The Junior class did a superior job, and should be complimented. As the couples presented themselves to the specta- tors, the gym was glowing with the flashes of cameras. The Jr.-Sr. Ban- quet was on the same night as the prom. Lynn Jacobson was master of ceremonies, Mr. Morlock, Tim, and Greg Mosser provided the entertain- ment. Senior and Junior remarks were presented by Adrian Worley and Lynn Jacobson. 68 STILL, MOONLIGHT MEMORIES WE MAKE A BEGINNING Class night was a night for old memories and awards. Tim Mos- ser and Lori Windfaldet were named recipients of the Kiwanis Award. Tim also received the S500 Moose scholarship and Lori claimed the Ambrose scholarship. Other awards given were the busi- ness award to Lori W.. Farmer’s Union scholarship to James Olson, and Norman Hanson. Supt. Ron Stammen presented medals to the Honor Students and Tim Mosser was named for the Leroy Throntveit athletic award. 71 BACCALAUREATE J 5 I I r M M p 4 ' (Mf M I f 72 COAL CONVERSION The DCHS Coal Furnace project is a monument to 'the ingenuity of the Divide County farmer and work- ing man. It really shows what can be done through cooperation at a time of financial need by all involved in a community or school affair. Rising energy prices and fuel shortages are issues presently being faced by all in our school district. This $31,000 project which saved $26,000 the first winter was a profitable solution to this historical energy crunch. 74 Sweetest of All You are the best of the best, Standing out from the rest. Many of our activities have music memories. Do you remember our Homecom- ing activities which revolved around the song, “Pretty Lady?” Remember that mellow song the mixed ensemble sang entitled “Movin’ On.” and the boys singing “Stout Hearted Men?” And who can possibly forget that prom where “Still” was featured. We hope that by dedicating this yearbook to music it will help hold those cherished memories for you. 89 We Tell the World How Proud We Are of Our Kids JOHN ANDRIST Editor Phone: 965-6088 ELMAN C.
