Magazine Drive. aff :-- l Being a very active class, they were well represented in football, basketball and baseball. Eighty percent of the Varsity Girls' Basketball team was composed of juniors. The leaders of the Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders were also juniors. The juniors led many of the activities of the school. They were very proud to have Eddie Wfortman elected president of the State Student Council. Their most important event of the year, the junior Prom, was very successfulg so was also the Senior Ball for which they worked very hard to make the seniors' last memories of Crosby pleasant ones. n. . , affix az f Us iii? Thus, starting off the new year so well, they have kept it up ever since. As proof of this, we need only point with pride to our football and bas- ketball teams. Many of the star players on both of these teams are sopho- mores. The girls, also are not to be forgotten, as many of them are cheerleaders on either the jayvee or varsity squad. Their ability to work together as a class was demonstrated by the great success of their biggest dance, the Sophomore Hop. They are an essential part of the school body, and a very likeable group that will be, no doubt, the leaders in nearly every activity and sport offered next year. 'fd 4 3-. 'H 52: ti? . After this riotous welcome things settled down to normal. Not only is this class the largest in Crosby, it is also one of the busiest. In the Band, on the football field, in the Radio Club, in the Glee Club and on the basketball court are found freshmen. Their boundless energy is not confined to these activities alone, however. The foresight of this class was shown by their plans for the annual freshman dance in the spring. As with all of their dances, it was a huge success. Many members of this class have distinguished themselves by their athletic talents, and many others by their scholastic ability. If this class continues to do as well as they have this year in both of these fields, Crosby may look forward to three more very profitable years. SUB-MARINES The newcomers to Crosby have, indeed, made themselves welcome with their happy faces. The boys, under the direc- tion of Mr. Norman Mansur, formed both basketball and football teams, thus showing that Crosby has a sports- minded group coming along that may be of great help to the Lions in coming years. The girls, not to be outdone by the boys, formed a cheerleading squad which has shown great promise for varsity material, Others have become interested in the art of baton twirling. Many in this group have made the Honor Rollg and it is sincerely hoped that this number will continue to increase as their next four years unfold. XVith a twelve win and five loss season, the girls have made a record that is better than many of the past years'. Hus- son, which had been undefeated since 1952, was one of the group's favorite victories. Much appreciated were the basketball warm-up jackets that came from the profits of the annual fall Curtis magazine drive, To show their gratitude to their coach, Miss White, the team presented her with an engraved plaque. Captain Ginny Laliond was unable to play be- cause of illness, but the team hopes to have her back again next year along with the other captain, joan Brown. With Charlie, their mascot, and the good luck that always seems to follow this team, there is no doubt in anyones mind that next year's sea- son will be just as successful, if not more so, for them. Not only have they shown a remarkable de- gree of sportsmanship when playing the game, but they have also been able to play together among themselves without friction, as a true team should. Congratulations are in order to this fine group of girls and their coach. A tournament was held in which every team played every other, so that a victor could be proclaimed. The captains of these teams were: Seniors, S. Thompsong juniors, B. Youngg Sophomores, G. Meserveyg Freshmen, Lang, A. Meserveyg Eighth Grade, G. Foss, M. Halling, M. Roberts. All the girls who took part enjoyed playing to- gether and learning teamwork and sportsmanship under the guidance of their coach, Miss White. From these, Coach Soucy narrowed the final team down to about eighteen players. Some of the boys on the team were, to be playing their last game for Crosby's mighty Lions. Two of these, Maurice Littlefield and Keith Grant, were chosen co-captains. Others who played a great deal for the Lions were Roger Smith, Russ Knight, Les La Fond, A1 Merritt, Ed Wortman, Pete Doak, Terry Horne, jack Gurney, Larry Evans, Robert Downs, and Ken Nickerson. Crosby won its first game, downing Blue Hill Academy 7 to 4 at their field. The audience was delighted with the fast-moving plot, the hilarious situations, the clever repartee and the exceptionally fine acting. The cast, under the direction of Mrs. Hester O. Crone, easily won the hearts of all by their enthusiasm, their naturalness and understanding portrayals of the various roles. The Footlights Club, under the direction of Mr. Harold Doe, has been a vital group in the school. In recent years, the most important material contribution that it has made is the large amount of money given to the Curtain Fund. The members have participated in the annual three-act play in the fall and the one- act plays in the spring. Various assemblies within the past several years have also been offered for the students' enjoyment. Each year the Crosby Footlights Club produces a series of three one-act plays. These are chosen with the purpose of providing good entertainment, offering as much variety as possible in dramatic material, and giving the opportunity to participate in dramatics to the greatest number of Crosby students. The plays this year, presented during the month of March were under the sponsorship of Amy L. DeForest, Robert A. Hall and Harold O. Doe. Ifdvvard XY'ortman was elected President of the State Student Council and Danny Knight vvas elected to the office of Vice President. but was unable to serve because of a previous ruling of the group, Other projects of the Council were the annual Curtis magazine drive and the attrac- tive Christmas decorations for the holidays, YEOMEN Another active group at Crosby, directed by Mrs, Packard, is the Commercial Club which has been responsible for the production and sale of the Crosby Crier. This club has a varied program which consists of speakers. field trips and other interesting activities. BOOT TRAINING Each year, representatives are elected from the junior Class to attend Dirigo at one of the colleges in Maine. While there, they attend lectures giv en by people prominent in governmental affairs. They are taught the true concepts of government and are given the opportunity to hold their own elections. The friendships and experiences are truly xxorthxvhile. and anyone fortunate enough to go should take advantage of the opportunities.
