EDITORIALS Through the ages, our predecessors have fought for freedom, liberty, and democracy which are all integral parts of our beloved United States. Now these rights are being threatened by communism, and because of this we, the youth of today, are being asked to leave behind our carefree days to go forth to fight a cause for which we are not the culprits. VV e ask ourselves, are We ready? Before we are able to leave our homes and loved ones behind, we must secure not only physical but moral courage. VVe must have a faith in God, a faith in humanity, and a faith in ourselves. Again we askg are we prepared? Wfe are living in an unstable world and we have been reared in an atomic age, an age in which no man can feel secure. XVe. the graduating class of 1951, have never known a world of peace, love, and com- pliance. Is there any doubt that we ask. have we the strength? Wfith uncertain minds and pensive hearts we reflect on these questions. Eventually. to each of us there will come a way of overcoming lifes obstacles if we keep our faith in the true and righteous way of life. VVe shall realize that this period in our youth is only a stepping stone to a world ahead. VVe shall know that to have lives free from trepidation and consternation. we must willingly leave behind the lesser things in life to strive for that which is good. r' rsfl tim zlv' cl Un Puglffif: page eight The present world situation appears very grim, especially to the youth of America who are to determine what the final out- come will be. All the free nations regard America as the leading country in the world, and as such, lean on her for pro- tection and financial help. It must be remembered, however, that from all major wars something is added to the American ideal, the American way of living. From our own American Revolution comes the system of republican govern- ment which is the basis of our present America. From the bloody French Revolu- tion, Americans have learned and adopted the principles of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Finally, from the two VVorld lVars, we have cemented firmly our demo- cracy, showing the rest of the world that a nation such as ours can, by its own power and freedom. conquer its enemies and rise to the great political, economic, and social heights that is America. At present. America is in a state of na- tional emergency due to the Korean Wlar. The present world situation may seem dark. but from every war something is learned to make the future a little brighter. The free nations now look to America for mili- tary and economic aid. I-low they will look to America in the future and the place America will hold in the future of the world will depend on the ability of her youth to learn something from every war. every mis- take. and use that knowledge for himself and his country.
