Dan Pontious, Jim Dennis Season Ends At Semi-Finals The Ceramics began the season impressively as they held one of the better backs in the state to 68 yards rushing, while rushing for nearly 300 yards themselves. Again the defense showed aggressiveness as Riverview didn’t collect a 1st down until late in the 3rd quarter. The Ceramic offensive backs again rushed for nearly 300 yds. The Little Muskies proved virtually unstopa-ble ip the 2nd half as they sustained two long scoring drives. A broken-play pass from Cunningham to Pittman seconds before half seemed to provide the spark the Muskies needed. With Crooksville’s offense somewhat sluggish, the defense picked up an unpressive shu -tout which included a last minute goal line stand to preserve the shut out and victory. The 3 1 Ceramics traveled to the Philo to do battle with the Electrics. Each team surrendered 7 points in the turnover played contest. The outcome was decided when Crooksville's opportunistic offense took advantage of still 3 more Philo turnovers, which netted the winners with 21 points. Again the defense scored a shutout, but unfortunately so did the Generals defense. Both offenses were held in check, as a defensive game was performed by both schools. Game 7 proved to be the time when Crooksville's running, passing, and defense meched. Maysville a fast and hugh squad was hammered by the hungry Ceramics, while the CHS squad kept continuous pressure on offensively. One of the all-time Cinderalla-type endings was the undoing of the Morgan Raiders. The Raiders, who had not scored on the Ceramics since 1976, put up 14 points in the 1st half. The Ceramics got close enough to score only a 3 pointer, Crooksville, with only 10 minutes left in the contest began a 75 yard drive that ended with 8 points. 11-14. After the defensive held, Crooksville's passing attack completed 5 of 6 in route to their 6th win in 8 starts. Crooksville posted its 3rd shutout against a vry powerful offensive machine. Both of West's rushers were held to under 50 yards. The Ceramics needed a win to qualify for the post season tournaments and what they got was a little more. The offensive squad passed for over a 100 yards and rushed for nearly 300 more while the defense limited New Lex.'s quarterback to 3 completions. The Ceramics were in the Play offs. Since Crooksville finished first in their Region, the Quarter Final, Gass 4 playoff game was to be held at Crooksville Satdium. Buckeye South, who finished 10th in the final APAA poll was a very explosive foe. It wasn't until the power offensive was utilized that South began to yield. A 1035 minute, 21-play 82 yard drive, gave Crooksville the outright Region 15 Crown. The 4000 crazed fans roared their approval at game's end. The Geveland based Catholic School finished 7th in the AA polls and boasted a very strong defense. That defense stifled the Ceramics' rushing attack, but not until late in third quarter could it stop the Ceramic air game. The Garfield team made the big play when they needed it. The never-say die Ceramics proved themselves winners as they battled to the final gun. The only consolation, if any, was that Garfield went on to claim the State Title. The girls steadily improved as the season progressed. After Christmas, we were in several close games. The disappointing factor of the season was that our shooting percentage was very low. The ocher statistics improved steadily during the season, but our shooting didn't. Anytime when we show 30% or better, we would have been in a close ball game. The scores from our final few games indicated that we were developing into a very good team, which proved to be true when we played in the tournaments. We played very well, but we only shot 26%. Had we shot 30% or better, we would have won the game. We are anxiously awaiting next season in hopes of having a winning team. The Ceramics led by senior guards Bob Browning and Mark Baringer finished this season with an 8-13 record. With the return of leading rebounder and second leading scorer Brian Taylor at center, point guard and assist leader Scott Ram bo and steady forwards Jim Watts and Jeff Stover, as well as lettermen Chris White and Brad Riley things look bright for the future. The Ceramics were led in scoring this season by Bob Browing who averaged near -ly 22 pcs. per game. Bob was the scoring leader in the MVL and was named to the District 12 all District Team. He also played in the District 12 all star game at Cambridge and was joined by Mark Barringer to represent Cr x ksville in the MVL all star game. Head Coach-Dick Tubaugh Reserve Coach-Dan Boyd 29 30 SOFTBALL GIRL’S SOFTBALL HAS A GREAT YEAR 1981 was a very good year for the CHS Softball team. They won the sectional and district titles and were defeated in the regional by Newark Catholic, 4-0. It was also the first year for a reserve team coached by Denzil Dillenger. There will be 7 returning starters for the 81 -82 season which should turn into a championship year. SCORES W. They set records for the most wins in a season (17), best over-all record by a C.H.S. team (17-6), highest finish in the M.V.L. (2nd), and also won their 3rd straight sectional championship. The Ceramics were led in their record setting by Sr. pitcher Bob Browning with his 9-3 pitching and .390 batting average. Soph. Centerfielder Chris White was the leading hitter (.400 avg), and Jr. Catcher Tim Harris hit .385 and led the team in RBI's. Srs. Rob Gossman and Rod Sprankle provided the homerun power, with Rob hitting 4 and Rod 3 round trippers. Sr. 2nd baseman Mark Barringer hit over .300 to anchor a solid defense with his great play. Eric Tokie, David Rosser, and Dari Holcombe completed the seniors who led the team all season. Jrs. Jim Watts, Jeff Stover, and Kevin Spurbeck along with sophs Jeff Baughman and Kelly Ruff, and FR. Dan Harris all contributed greatly to the record setting season. With outstanding Jr. Varsity and Freshmen teams, coached by Mike Sewell, the baseball future at C.H.S. looks very promising!
