HOMECOMING Crooksville marched 60 yards with the opening kick-off, capping the drive with Bryan Wolfe's 3 yd. run, and held Maysville the rest of the way for a 7-0 Muskingum Valley League victory over the visiting Panther squad. The Ceramics evened their league record at 2-2 with the win and are now 3-2 overall. The opening drive was kept on the ground, eating up just short of 10 minutes. Then with 2:04 left in the quarter, Wolfe scooted into the end zone. Rob Embrey added the extra point for an early 7-0 lead. But that was all the scoring the Homecoming crowd was to see. Neither team posed a threat for the rest of the first half, although Maysville started its possessions in Crooksville territory. In the third period, Maysville had the ball on the Crooksville 14, but lost it on downs. Crooksville's only other scoring threat came in the final stanza, only to lose the ball on downs also. Late in the game, Maysville moved the ball from their own 21 yard line to the Crooksville 43, but Rod Buckley intercepted a Panther pass around the 15 and ran out the clock. Kevin Bowen, Ernie DeGarmo, and Greg Sherrick led the defensive unit, who have shut out their opponents in all the victories this year. This article was written by Brian Spurbeck for the Messenger on October 12, 1977. Segments of that article have been omitted here. HOMECOMING The Homecoming for the '78 year was held on October 7. The queen, Teresa Weiner, was escorted by Kevin Bowen, Sr. Attendants Christy Ford and Cindy Willison by Greg Rosser and Rod Buckley, Jr. Myra Cavinee by Mark Kenny, Soph. Karen Collins by Jeff Altier, Fresh. Beth Schooley by Kelly Wood. Last year's queen, Debbie Hamm, was escorted by Ernie DeGarmo. The crowning ceremony took place during pre-game. Queen Teresa drew the winning number from the barrel for the game football as shown in the picture on the opposite page. 63 It was Saturday, November 26, 1977, and for most people it was the 3rd day of a near typical Thanksgiving weekend. For some people, the day was destined to become an unforgetable segment of Crooksville History. Hundreds of football-proud fans had journeyed the 100 miles to Akron, in spite of hazardous road conditions to read the final chapter of a Cinderella type story. A small, but strong and quick, Crooksville Football team had earned the right to meet a massive Ashtabula St. John's Team in the finals for the 1977 Class A football crown. Battling 3 inches of snow, a temperature of 23 degrees and winds up to 45 mph, both teams waged a herculean struggle for nearly 2 hours. But there could be but one winner, and Crooksville was not to be denied. Using an offense that continually moved the ball, and a murderous 'butt-em' defense, the Ceramics had proven that they indeed were worthy of the 1977 Class A State Football Championship. Once again the rich and proud tradition of Crooksville football supremacy stood alone - - at the top. The Freshmen squad shown with Richie Bateson, the Senior class flirt, practiced long and hard to cheer their team on. Although it looks in the picture as if they don't do much, the girls couldn't resist a rest on Richie's car. The Reserve cheering season did not start until basketball season, but were involved in football activities also. The girls were always faced with the problem of not having an alternate but usually managed to change the cheers to work out with 4 or 5 girls. The Varsity cheerleaders went to camp again this year and learned a lot of new things, one of them being how to get people's attention with punch balloons. The screaming, yelling, and practicing really paid off because the girls brought home an NCA Spirit Stick, two blue ribbons, and a red ribbon for the school. 81 7-8-9 BASKETBALL Row 1: Brian Hartman, Chris White, Kelly Ruff, Duncan Moore, Glen Holcomb, Jay Harper. For four of these girls cheering was old hat, but two were newcomers to the squad. The year began with many hours of practice and preparation for the upcoming football and basketball season. In their first year, the freshman have many adjustments to make. Winning and losing are very important in that adjustment. Also they learned how to work with each other and Mrs. Wallace-their advisor. These girls are to be congratulated for their fine efforts during their first year in High School. The squad is looking forward to the upcoming year of cheering. The Rubber Bowl and their contest participation have been important to the band and their director. With the help of many people the band made their striking appearance in new uniforms. Surprisingly enough, half of the band consists of junior high school students. Even though only good times are written here, there were hard times for the band. But band members agree - whether good times or bad- they were times the CHS band will never forget.
