NAMESAKE The USS CROMMELIN (FFG-37) is named in ttonor of three brothers, all graduates ( the United States Naval Academy, who performed heroic service during World War D. VICE Admiral F!enry Cnmiineliii. ISN, (1904-1971) commanded l estroyer Squadron Fim during the Gtlbort Islands Campaign for which he was awarded the Sihe r Star Medal for gall»ntr . He also earned the Bronze Star Medal for heroism during the amphibious assault which resulted in the capture and occupation of Guam, Marianas Klands. Admiral Crummelin later served as Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel and Chief of SUff to C:ommander Destroyers. IS Atlantic Reet He commanded the cruiser Des Moines (CA-134), flagship to the Siith Reet. was commander of Battleship Division Two and served as Commander Naval Base Newport Rhode Island until his retirement on November 1, 1959. Commander Charies L. Crommelin, HSN. (1909-1945) earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses, one for leading aerial raids on the Marcus Ulands and the other for gallantrv as Commander ir Group Five during the Gilbert Islands Campaign. After assuming command of Carrier Air Group Twebe. he was awarded the .Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism during the first carrier task force raids on Japan on February 17, 1945. On .March 28, Commander Oommelin volunteered to fly from another aircraft carrier to participate in pre-invasion strikes on Okinawa. He never returned. Lieutenant Commander Richard G Crommelin, L SN, (1917-1945) received the .Navy Cross as a .Navy pilot for ertraordinarv heroism during the Battle of the Coral Sea and a Gold Star IN lieu of a second Navy Cross for heroism as a pilot during the Battle of Midway. He wus in command of Fighting Squadron eighthly-eight when he was lost in a midair collision with an .Vmeriran plane near Hokkaido, .la pan. SYMBOLISM SHIELD: The coloni blue and gold are tradionally associated with the I ' .S. Navy. The three interlaced chevronels represent the Crommelin brothers who were comrades in arms during World War II. The two winged chevronels refer to the air exploits of Lieutenant Commander Richard and Commander Charles Crommelin who served and died as .Naval . viators. Naval forces in their efforts to regain conquered territories of the Pacific Ocean throughout World War IL CREST: The rampant sea Hon Is a symbolic creature associated with valor at sea; Its head and mane are scarlet for courage and its body is gold for ical and achievement. Ihe scariet sword recalls the fierce conflict of the Pacific war and the wings and Silver collar with blue cross signify some of the decorations the brothers received such as the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
