TH€ SHIP The USS CROMMCIIN (FFG 37) is the 31st ship of the Oliver Hozord Perry class of guided missle frigates. The cnOMM€llN ' S keel ujos laid on 30 May 1980 at Todd Pacific Shipyards, Seattle Division. On 2 July 1981 CROMM€llN uuos christened and launched. She luos delivered to the Navy on 9 June 1983 and uuas commissioned on 18 June 1983. CROMM€LIN ' S mission is to provide onti-oir, onti-submorine, and ontl-surfoce protection for underojoy replenishment groups, convoys, omphibious forces and other military as Luell as merchant shipping. These tasks are carried out by o ujide orroy of armaments such os: MK 13 MOD 4 Guided Missle Launcher uuith surface to air and Harpoon sur- face to surface missies. MK 75 76mm rapid firing gun, toio triple tube MK 32 flSLU torpedoe mounts, MK 1 5 MOD 1 Close In UUeop- ons System (CIUUS), and tujo SH60 LAMPS MK III helicopters. The CnOMM€llN is poujered by tojo LM2500 GG gas turbine engines capable of delivering 4 1 ,000 total shaft horsepouuer ond moving her through the ujoter at speeds in excess of 28 knots. CROM- MCIIN displaces 3800 tons and carries a creui of 17 officers and 186 enlisted. -... TH€ CRUISe On 1 3 aprll 1 987 the CROMMeilN departed Long Seoch Cali- fornia for on extended deployment that uuould prove to be more than just routine. During the course of the cruise CROMMCLIN ujould be called into oction in the hot and unpredictable Persion Gulf. CROMM€LIN uuos ossigned duty os escort for the reregist- ered Kuujoiti Tankers on the first five convoys escort operations, fldditionolly. the deployment featured enjoyable port calls to Subic Boy. PI: Diego Garcia; Mole. Maldives; Somboy, India: Sitra Bahrain; Fremantle. nustrolio: bock to Subic: Pearl Harbor; and on 13 October 1987, return to Long Seoch. Betujeen those dotes the creoj aiould see 652 meals served including 14.331 lbs of beef, 2,526 gal of milk. 33.191 lbs of fruits ond vege- tables. 9,736 lbs of breads and pastries, and 2,347 lbs of cheeses. The ship uiould travel approximately 31,000 nouticol miles ond use approximately 2,165,920 gollons of fuel, and 139,596 qollons of aviation fuel.

I CAMM SNDimG CDR Thomas C. J. McGinlay Commander Thomos C. J. McGinloy, USN is the son of Mrs, Josephine and the lote Mr. Thomas McGinlay of Chicago, Illinois. He received his bachelor ' s degree from the University of St. Mary of the Lake and attended Navy Officer Candidate School in Neiju- port, Rhode Island. He uuas commissioned as ensign in 1967. He then completed troining in deep sea diving ond ship salvage op- erations ot the U.S. Navy School of Diving and Salvage, UUashing- ton Navy Vard. Commander McGinloy reported to his first ship, USS TRlUnK- ONI (flTf 1 14), in Pearl Harbor. In 1969 he reported for training to Submarine School Neuj London. He served in USS RLCNNV (SS 324) and USS TUSK (SS 426) from 1969 to 1972. In 1972 Commander McGinlay uuas ordered to San Diego, Co. for training as a deep submersible pilot (Navy Hydronout). In 1973 he reported as executive officer of nvniON (DSRV 2). On 12 December 1973, then Lieutenant McGinlay piloted OVfl- lON to a depth of 1 ,892 feet In the open ocean off La Jolla, Co. to achieve the first deep ocean mate of a Navy submersible luith a simuloted submarine on the ocean bottom. In 1974 he relieved as officer in chorge of MVSTIC (DSftV 1.) After graduation from Destroyer School in Neuuport, Rhode Island in 1976 Commander McGinlay served as operations offi- cer in USS MnHnN (RDG 42). He groduated from the Novol Post- groduote School, Monterey uuith a master of science degree in manpouuer and personnel management onolysis in 1979 ond then served os executive officer in USS l)IG€lOUJ (DD 942) until 1 98 1 . Commander McGinlay then served on the staff of the Chief of Novol Operations as head of the retired pay, reserve pay, and benefits policy section. He reported for duty in USS CHOMMCIIN in 1985 ond ujos relieved in August 1987.
