The sound of happy voices, the spirit of good sports, the forming of ideals and aspirations - all blend into our high school experiences. With the sincere hope of bringing a worthwhile souvenir of happy days at Crockett High School to its many loyal students, the staff has devoted many hours of work. We feel that your satisfaction with this yearbook is our compensation, and with this thought in mind, the staff presents to you the 1961 Bulldog. ROYCE ANN HEARD Editors - MAC SKIPPER •' aaivw vwiv 'hvh .. . HERE’S A TOAST TO THEE TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES FAVORITES ATHLETICS SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN ADVERTISERS DEDICATION As head of the Athletic Department of C.H.S., Coach Raymond Haas has been the director in the making of many excellent athletic records. The outstanding achievement was the winning of the District 22AA football championship. In grateful appreciation for his wonderful efforts, which have done so much for Crockett High School, we would like to dedicate this, our 1961 Bulldog, to Coach Haas. ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT Soon you will be assuming the privileges of full citizenship and adulthood. These privileges carry with them certain responsibilities for which you must prepare yourself, for we are living in a world of great challenge and opportunity, but by the same token, one with many problems which it will fall your lot to help solve. It you are to continue with your education after you leave Crockett High School, be sure to do so, for an edu- cated population makes it possible for our country to meet the challenges and problems before us. As those of you who are senior graduates, you will either continue your education, go to work, and or establish a home. In doing so, be sure that you assume your share of the lead and do the best job you are capable of doing for that is the reputation you have gained as a student of C. H. S. Those of you who will be in our schools for a few more years will, I know, keep the fine record intact that has been established and will make us glad to have you as our representatives. Terrell W. Ogg Superintendent of Schools In my message this year, I would like to, first, direct a few remarks to the Senior Class of 1961. As you read this note, you will have participated in the Eighty Ninth Commencement Exercises of Crockett High School, and you will have your diplomas as members of the graduating class of 1961. The fact that eighty-eight classes have preceded you here in this school is quite a record and each of you should feel that you are in a way the recipient of a rich heritage. However, it is too late to dwell in the past; now is the time to look to the future. Face the future with a renewed determination, and bolster that determination with a one hundred per cent effort, and you will continue to climb the ladder of suc- cess. Congratulations on your graduation and on the production of this splendid annual. To you. the members of the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades, as you return to school in Septem- ber to take your respective places here in your school, I would encourage each of you to also attack each task and assignment with renewed determination and effort. Do not be satisfied with just trying to get by. Go the extra mile. Not only will you receive a deep personal satisfaction from doing more than is expected of you. but at the same time you will be helping to prepare yourself for a happier and more successful life in this decade, sometimes spoken of as the Exciting Sixties, but also in the other dec- ades to come. Best wishes. Forty-five boys formed the nucleus of a team that wanted to and were ready to pay the price to be victorious. The team won 9 games during the year and became the first Crockett team to ever post an undefeated season, although playing one tie in early season. In district play the Bulldogs played the role of true champions, copping both the district championship and the dis- trict Sportsmanship trophy. During the season the Bulldogs amassed a total of 277 points, while being dented for only 52. In the four district matches, Crockett scored 134 points and shut out three of the opponents, giving up only 6 points. They placed eight boys on the All-District team, five honorable mention All-District, and had one player chosen as an honorable mention All-State performer. The team was gifted with four wonderful coaches who taught to them the true meaning of football, that is to win and to win as a unit, not as individuals. Desire and clean play were stressed throughout the season. As sportsmen, the Bulldogs never made a poor showing. Although the football season is over, the memory of the boys who made the team that represented Crockett Hi in 1960 will be long remem- bered, and with good cause. TOP ROW: Bowman. Moore. Gayle. Jimmy and Johnny did a good job for the Bulldogs in 1960-61. Smiles of confidence play across the faces of the seniors as they talk before the huge crowd present at the Homecoming bonfire. The Bull- dogs won the Homecoming game, as they chewed up the Madisonville Mustangs 30-0 and went on to become the first undefeated Crockett football team in history. Sixteen seniors, all of whom were present at the bonfire, played their last minutes for C.H.S. during the glorious 60-'61 season, a season that will never be forgotten. The BONFIRE helped light the path to the Bulldog's District Championship FRESHMAN DEDICATION The Freshman Class of Crockett High School wishes to dedicate this page of the 1961 Bulldog to Terry Paxton Knox, who passed away on March 26, 1961 in Houston. Terry entered C. H. S. as a freshman in the fall of 1960. Terry was an outstanding member of his class and was loved by his friends and classmates. He will live long in the memory of those who knew him. SENIORS Dear Classmates, September 7, 1949, a date probably forgotten by many of us, was our first step on the stairway of success. Yes, on that day sixty-seven frightened yet eager children entered the first grade of Crockett Elementary School. After twelve years of school, work, and fun, nineteen of the original sixty-seven have managed to remain to- gether through the trials and temptations of our youth. Miss Ruth Maxwell and Mrs. Beatrice Griffin were our courageous and conscientious first grade teachers. That year we learned to read by the association of words and pictures; to count by counting colorful beads; and to write by the painstaking efforts on the part of both student and teacher. However juvenile that may sound now, our education is built on these three fundamentals. We lovingly remember our second grade teachers, Mrs. Easterly and Mrs. Faver, for their patience and ten- derness. Mrs. Bynum. Mrs. Caskey, Miss King, and Mrs. Schmidt, our third and fourth grade teachers, respec- tively, taught with a ruling but gentle hand that we affectionately remember. Mr. Mullens, our principal, was replaced by Mr. Gailen Stewart our fourth grade year. Going up more steps, we felt a little self-important. Departmental work and the use of the main library made the fifth grade more exciting. Mrs. Marcus Mason and Mrs. Pauline Moore were our homeroom teachers that year. When we entered the sixth grade, we really felt in the swing of the junior high activities for we thought that we were as big as the eighth graders. In the seventh grade we KNEW that we were as important as the eighth graders; so we began partying more and more. All of this was just leading up to the Big Year. Yes, the eighth grade was everything we thought it would be. The PUPS' HOWL was ours; the other classes looked up to us; the junior high band and football team were a part of us; and promotion day was awaited ex- pectantly. It came at last on May 28, 1957! That day we lined up anxiously upstairs, had a group picture made, and after a nervous silence, began marching down the stairs into the auditorium singing meaningfully Shout! Wherever you may be, I am an American, I am from the heart of me. After appropriate remarks by Superin- tendent W. L. Jordan and Principal Gailen Stewart, we proudly walked across the stage to receive our diplomas. Our seniors initiated us fish into high school the same day. Several picnics and parties were on our agenda during this time. We fondly remember Miss Hattie Wootters, Mrs. Carpenter, Mrs. Sallas, Mrs. Caskey, Mr. Summers, and Miss Hassell as just a few of our junior high teachers. Being in high school was a dream come true. However, we soon discovered that the courses were somewhat harder even though numerous activities were always available. Our freshman class raised money mainly by selling cakes on the square in order to honor the sophomores with a party: Candyland was our theme. Our sponsors that year were Mrs. Robbie Deauman and Mr. Charles English; Mr. William Schmidt was principal. As sophomores, we welcomed Superintendent T. W. Ogg into our school system, and although we were sorry to lose Mr. Schmidt, we warmly received Mr. Stewart as our new principal. The freshmen honored us with An Evening in Paris that spring. Mrs. Nat Patton, Jr. and Mr. S. N. Boykin were our sponsors. We are juniors and we are going to honor the seniors with the best prom ever was almost the password our junior year. We worked together harmoniously and continuously in order to make this obsession a reality. By sponsoring school parties, selling cakes, keeping the basketball concession stand rolling with trade, and winning the prize money at the Jabberwock for the best skit, we reached our monetary goal. We made crepe paper roses at our class meetings night after night. The night of the prom we slowly drifted in to the strains of Moonlight and Roses, the theme and theme song of our prom. Mrs. Bess Hazlett and Mr. A. H. Sanders were our junior sponsors. Now we are on the twelfth step of success. Our senior year is fast drawing to a close, but our wonderful mem- ories will not soon fade away. The district championship in football and the reception of our beautiful senior rings highlighted last semester. Mrs. Lucy Heard and Mr. Jimmy Moore are our class sponsors. We are now looking forward to the prom and other parties and banquets to be given in our honor, but the most important day to us in the near future is graduation day - May 30, 1961. Throughout the halls of dear ole CHS I can almost hear us singing; Hail Alma Mater, hats off to you. Ever you’ll find us loyal and true; Firm and undaunted ever we'll be. Hail to the school we love here's a Toast to thee.
