L. JORDAN. SUPERINTENDENT CROCKETT, TEXAS Greetings r These greetings are being written early in the school year. You are actively engaged in academic class work and in the many extra-curricular activities of our school. The lessons learned in sportsmanship, respecting the rights of teachers and fellow students, and the grit and determination exhibited in doing the daily class- room tasks, will be worth far more to you than learn- ing a date in history or how to extract the square root of a number. Your future success depends upon how well you learn these lessons. The test of a man is the fight he makes. The grit that he daily shows; The way he stands on his feet and takes Fate's numerous bumps and blows. A coward can smile when there's naught to fear. When nothing his progress bars: But it takes a man to stand and cheer While the other fellow stars. For a class that is not so numerical large you have worked and accomplished many things that would be a credit to larger classes. You have had a good spirit, and your school C.H.S. will be the richer for having had you to pass through its portals. This book, your biggest project, your masterpiece, is your monument. I have appreciated your friendliness and friendship Good luck to you in your future work and God Bless You, W. M. Schmidt BOARD OF EDUCATION T. E. Walden Wilse Hail, Jr. R. L. Mrs. Oscar Maxwell was our teacher and we were perplexed when we discovered that she had eyes in the back of her head. The second day we were on hand, but this time we left our mothers at home and settled down to business. Our principal was Mr. Edward Darsey. We were sorry that James Ray Johnson moved away that year. In the second grade we speedily progressed with Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Driskill as our teachers. Then something happened to cast a shadow across our happy days. The twelve year system went into effect and Mrs. Driskill's room became a third grade, leaving some of us behind in Mrs. Moore's room later to become the great Class of '51. That year we added Jack Heard, R. J. Moore, and Mary Swearingen to our class. Mrs. Driskill became our third grade teacher and Mr. S. K. Bright replaced Mr. Darsey as principal. Charlene Adams and Peggy Bean were welcomed as new members of our class. When we advanced to the fourth grade. Miss King was our teacher. Mr. F. C. Whittlesey became our principal after Mr. Bright moved away. We were happy to have Mary Swearingen return after a period of going to another school. R. J. Moore also moved aw'ay that year. After toiling with the multiplication tables and those horrible long division problems, we were promoted. The fifth grade was new and exciting to us. Mrs. Jack Barbee was our homeroom teacher. We soon discovered that everytime the bell rang we had a different teacher for a new subject. This made us feel very grown up and we w’ere pleased. There was also a change in our campus life. The boys were transferred to the back campus to play. Mrs. Sallas replaced Mr. Whittlesey as our principal. L. A. Parker and Harrell Carpenter decided to move away a little while, but they were not happy at being separated from our class. As a result, they returned before the year ended. Bobby Ellis, Jane Frisby, and Kenneth Caldwell, by this time, had joined our class. In the sixth grade, as in every previous year, something new was added. Mrs. Travis King was our teacher for homeroom and Mr. Standley replaced Mrs. Sallas as principal. Mrs. Sallas taught us reading and activity, which we shall never forget. When she entered the room with How do you do? do? do? it seemed to brighten the days tremendously. Then we would answer, “Fine, Fine, Fine. She would then ask, Is everybody happy? and we would reply, Yes! Yes! Yes! Those after school sessions, and spankings, with rulers on our birthdays, were not to be forgotten either. We were happy to add these new faces to our class: Barbara Smith, Robert Hazlett, James Chiles, Ouida Winston, and Roy Bert Pinkerston. Charlene Adams moved away after school closed that summer. We thought that Mrs. Bridges, who became our homeroom teacher, was so attractive that we were saddened when she moved away at mid-term. However, it was not long before Mrs. Gentry, with her pleasing personality, filled her place as our teacher. Mr. Mullins, who became our principal, was a friend to all the students. It was about the time that the boys started acting more like gentlemen. They stopped putting tacks in the girls chairs, tripping them, and laughing as they rolled gracefully down the stairs, and pouring ink into the girls hair, along with a few other natural changes. We were happy to welcome the twins, Wanda and Wilma Lively, along with Gloria Martin, and Mary Swearingen, who had returned that year. We were sorry to lose Roy Bert. Mrs. King, our art teacher, resigned at mid-term and Mrs. Carpenter took her place. When we entered the eighth grade and became seniors in grade school, Mrs. Smith Wootters, a lady we shall always love and remember, was our homeroom teacher. There was much excitement this year when we thought about the day to which we had looked forward, graduation day. Mrs. Wootters prepared a lovely program. Our honor students with an average of ninety or above were the following: Dorothy Brasher, Barbara Smith, Margie Buller, Gloria Martin, Bobby Ellis, Betty Hudson and Nell Bradley. We added to our class this year, Ray Bounds, Cecil Baker, Janet Robinson, Margie Buller, Daisy Hester and Betty Hudson. Janet Robinson and Ruth Bradley had to move before the year ended. In 1948, we became Frightened freshmen. It was not long until we found that Mr. Schmidt, along with the senior students, would not really bite. Miss Beulah Breazeale was our homeroom teacher. Our class officers were: President, Rex Rhone; Secretary, Gloria Martin; and Vice-President, Kenneth Caldwell. We had several additions to our class that year as follows: Shirley Ashby, Armond Woolley, Rex Rhone, Frances Smith, Mary Vaden. Eunice Jones, and Annette Grote. We were sorry to have Joyce Allen, Cecil Baker, Raymond Crawford, Frankie Morgan, Meek Langston, Annette Grote and Gloria Sue Martin withdraw from our class. As silly sophomores” high school seemed more like home to us. We were divided into two homerooms. This was the first time our class had been divided since we were in the second grade. Mr. Simmons and Miss Vaughan were our homeroom teachers. Our class officers were: President, Jack Heard; Vice-President, John Brannen; and Secretary, Rex Rhone. The new students in our class that year were Robin Arnett, Tinnie Cook, Bobby Ham, Bob Lillian, Annette Reed, and Raymond Woolley. We were sorry to lose Bobby Ham, Betty Richardson and Nell Moffitt. When we were jolly juniors we had one great ambition, to present the seniors with the best prom ever given, and we did. Our homeroom teachers were Mrs. Bess Hazlett and Mrs. Mable Goolsbee. Raymond Woolley was our class President, Jack Heard the Vice- President and Betty Jo Hudson, our Secretary-Treasurer. James Ray Johnson and Robert Hazlett returned to our class and we were happy to welcome our new students, Irene Patterson, L. E. Roberts and Glayse Childs. We were sorry to lose Dorothy Brasher, Tinnie Cook, Kenneth Caldwell, John Brannen and Robin Arnett. As proud dignified Seniors of '51, our homeroom teacher is Mr. Gailen Stewart and Mrs. Evelyn Churchill is our sponsor. Our class officers are: President, Jack Heard; Secretary. Barbara Smith; and Vice-President, Raymond Woolley. We are happy to welcome Janet Robinson and sorry to lose Lorene Smith. Now we look forward to our prom, senior plays. Commencement exercises and all the activities that will become beautiful memories in our future. Our happy days are saddened when we think of parting and each one going his own way. Yes, these days will always be cherished in our treasure chest of Happy Days. 7 tott SecuUtfrU Tftott 'PafiuCcii ‘Sett ?4Cl- ocind BARBARA SMITH T fa t Pafruiai JOE STUART ARLEDGE 7tfr 7?to4t ‘Beautiful Ann Arledge Bonnie Smith Jane Ellis Reed Ferguson Harrell Carpenter Rex Rhone L.
