Wildlife Commissioner Arnold Mitchell said Jerry P. Maupin of Murray and Billie E. Travis of Princeton were discharged for violating South Dakota and federal mi- gratory waterfowl hunting laws. “We felt like this is what was needed to be done,” Mitchell said of the firings. “It was my decision.” Mitchell declined further comment be- cause he said the matter “likely will come before a personnel board hearing.” In a written statement announcing the action, Mitchell said the tw'o were fired “after a thorough review and evaluation of reports from the South Dakota Depart- ment of Game, Fish and Parks and the U.S. B'ish and Wildlife Service regarding the incident.” Maupin had been a conservation officer' for 12 years, Trayis for 5 1 2 years, Mitchell could have suspended the men or not have taken any action, a spokes- man said. The two were members of a seven-man hunting party charged with violating wildlife laws in South Dakota. The hunters were arrested with 267 ducks, “about 150 over maximum pos- sible” for a hunting party of that size, according to South Dakota officials. They were arraigned in Plankinton, S.D., magistrate’s court on charges of pos- session of small game with insufficient plummage. Each was fined $100 and sentenced to 10 days in jail, but the jail sentence and $50 of each fine was suspended. Before a federal magistrate in Sioux Falls, S.D., all but one of the hunters were fined $300 on a charge of over pos- session, the officials said. South Dakota authorities identified those arrested as a 17-year-old bov; Jerry Knight, 24; Robert Hornsby, 27. and Clair E. Eversmeyer, 20, all of Murray, and
