TS| il« I bisinl lisas tf Special Day, 1966 DEAR MRS. HILL, As we peeped through this keyhole, we again saw you standing before your classes. We recalled with much satisfaction the times you stood before us, helping us through our crucial junior year. You taught us the fine points of our language and helped us to feel the pulse of literature. Those of us who ventured to take a foreign language could never forget our wonderful German classes. We had much fun as we learned to read and speak German under your capable and untiring supervision. For these things and many more and for your genuine concern for us, we are truly appreciative— we emerged as more learned individuals. Cordially yours, The Senior Class MRS. RUTH HILL University of North Carolina, A.B. English Literature German Sprechen Sie Deutsch ? Mrs. Hill, we will always remember that wonderful smile of approval. 4 ESPECIALLY FOR YOU MRS. WHITE MRS. ADA WHITE Western Kentucky State College, A.B. Algebra, Geometry, Trig. This daily classroom scene has endeared Mrs. White to her students. Mrs. White is an excellent mathematician, and she is always willing to show us how it's done, quotes one student. Four years have passed, and we realize now what a great role you have played in our high school education. With each passing year you taught us the fundamentals of higher mathe- matics and thereby prepared us for our future. For your pleasant nature, willingness to help us, and mathematial knowledge and abilities, the seniors are sincerely grateful. Not only is there an art in knowing a thing, but also- a certain art in teaching it.” MRS. LOUISE ALLEN, Murray State College, B.S.; M.A. MR. EDWARD CARROLL, Murray State College, U S. A thrilling sight to see the flame. The Cheerleaders not only added beauty to the parade, but they also got to rest before the big game. Homecoming is the essence of our school life. It is a week for expression of the many underlying threads which tie our school together. It is a float, an ink smeared shirt, a bonfire, and a football game. It is group enthusiasm, excite- ment, and joy. Juniors had the winning float. Second place was F.B.L.A. The Band did an excellent job. 58 HIGHLIGHTS Homecoming is our school and ourselves, its students, growing. It is a step back for gradu- ates of our Alma Mater, and a new memory for us. Homecoming is a week worth fighting for, for it will be the diary of our school life in years to come. Class of '66 placed third. Sophomore s won last place. White shirt day was fun! The 16-piece band, which Long refers to as a “stage band,” already has played at two school dances — the Beta Club Christmas Dance and an- other Yule dance sponsored by the band. “Improved Musicianship” It all adds up to “improved musicianship” of the student, who learns to read his music better.” — Instruments making up the band include five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones, a bass horn, piano and drums. In Regular Band All of the students in the stage band are also members of the school's regular, 45- piece concert and marching band. Some, in fact, are members of even another school band— the pep band. Two who take part in all three units are Mike Brown, a 17-year-old sen- ior, and Steve Runyan, a 16- year-old junior. The pep band is a “flexible organization,” says Brown, who is the “self-appointed leader.” “We never really know for sure how many we will have to play at any given basket- ball game,” he quipped. Our membership ranges from 3 to ___________________________ 3 Students At Band Festival Courier West Kentucky Bureau MARION, Ky. — Three stu- dents in the Crittenden Coun- ty instrumental music depart- ment are in Lexington this weekend to participate in the All-State band festival. They are Nancy Vaughn, who plays the flute, Mike Brown, bass horn, and Stan Runyan, percussion. School’s FBLA Organizatior Winner of Business Award Courier West Kentucky Bureau MARION. Ky. — The FBLA Clubs in high schools all over the country are composed of students who hope to be “fu- ture business leaders of Amer- ica. Crittenden County High School has one such FBLA club, but its members aren't waiting for the future. They're leaders already. If proof is needed, the presi- dent of Crittenden County High’s FBLA Club, 16-year- old Stan Runyan, will show 'you the first prize won by his club at last spring's state con- vention. The prize came in the proj- ect division, Runyan recalls. The club’s project last year was a pamphlet portraying Marion’s attractive qualities for potential new industry. Circulated Pamphlet Working with the Marion Businessmen’s Association, the school’s FBLA club created the pamphlet and had it cir- culated to prospective indus- tries throughout the U.S. “We haven’t pulled an in- dustry here yet,” Runyan said, “but we haven't quit try In fact, our main project year is a follow-up of year's.” Marion was one of cities left in the running an industry which recently cided to locate in the o city, Runyan said. Effort! his club helped keep Ma in the running down to wire, he thinks. Club Took Petitions In an effort to land thai dustry, club members took titions to all downtown b nesses, seeking signature' each citizen interested in trading that industry. ( members even went doo: door, Runyan recalls. “We haven't become couraged yet,” Runyan s “We still have hopes that can help new industry lot here.” In order to gather hei| hints, Runyan and a fel club member toured local dustries and asked pertir questions of officials here Crittenden Plans Job Training Courier We I Kentucky Bure MARION, Ky. - groundwork has been laid Crittenden County High Set for a vocational business | gram which is expected provide certain students on-the-job training in the ture. A step in that direction taken with the opening of 1965-66 school year, w about $15,000 in new of machine equipment was stalled here for students in vanced business courses. CITES GRADES, CONDUCT Principal Lauds Students' Acts _ T_ „ Courier WeM Kentucky Bureau MARION, Ky. — When Crittenden County High School principal Ercel B. Little discusses the 560 students who come j under his jurisdiction, he makes two key observations. 1. “I am most proud of how well our graduates do in col- 1 leg? and universities. 2. “We have a good bunch of students here — both in The realm of discipline and in academics.” Little, a sports-minded principal who played basketball under Adolph Rupp at the University of Kentucky (1930-32), also is proud that a greater number of Crittenden County (High grads are seeking advanced education. “More than 40 jper cent of last year’s graduates went on to higher educa- tion,” he said. A 1932 graduate of UK, with a master’s degree from Murray State, Little is a stickler for the well-disciplined stu- dent. “We don’t have problems with too-short dresses or Beatle- type haircuts here,” he said. An assembly early in the school year cautioned students along that line, he recalls. A Crittenden County native. Little has been principal here since 1952. The school he commands was consolidated that year. Marion High, an independent school district, joined in the consolidation in 1957 and Crittenden County High now is j the only high school in the county.
