Occn AT CRITTENDEN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL Marion, Kentucky Presented in the 1956 SJt6Utt'K c6 Volume VI Published by the Senior Class ‘DetUcatioK It is with respect and appreciation that we dedicate this, the 1956 volume of The Sham- rock, to our assistant Principal and librarian, Mr. Wilbur Horning. Because of his sincerity and his loyalty to Crittenden County High School, Mr. Horning has won our respect; but most of all, for just being himself, he has truly found a warm place in our hearts. 0}?te4 ciye I cannot go into the lives of each member of this class and outline the vast store of your individual talents, for they are too many and too varied for enumeration in the few lines at my disposal. We feel we have some truly great students in this 1956 graduating class and I greatly doubt, in all the years ahead, the school will have many, if any, to surpass you in all-around ability. By your insistence on always doing the thing you know to be right, and by making yourselves felt in every group movement of social and civic betterment, you will surely add to the glory of Crittenden County High School in many wonderful ways not yet foreseen. faculty LOUIS LITCHFIELD—B.S., Murray Slate College. As an institution which has been a part of and has served in this section of Kentucky for approximately three times as long as the average graduate of the 1956 Class of Crittenden County High has lived, we want to extend congratulations and good wishes to the members of the Crittenden County High Class of '56. To earn a high school diploma is no small achievement and. to reach this milestone in your life, your parents have spent on you. the statisticians tell us, about $10,000.00. And ten thousand dollars is a right sizable sum of money. Think what that sum would buy even today when prices are high and money is cheap. Many, in fact most of your parents, wonder just how they have done it. For the most part, the answer lies in just two things: (I) a determination to get the iob done and (2) teaming to do without some thing, possibly a lot of things, which parents who have not placed such a premium on education as have your own parents, which other parents have had. To your parents, who have in numerous instances sacrificed that you might have this graduation day, you owe a debt of gratitude which but few of you shall ever be able to repay. And, be it said to the credit of those fine and dependable parents of yours, they will not expect you to repay them in cash or in material things of any sort but you can repay them in being the kind of citizens and leaders in your communities which they expect you, in the years to come, to be. We have confidence enough in you to believe that you are not going to fail them. We wish that it were possible for us to tell you on this occasion of your graduation — and still stick to the truth — that the road ahead of you is always going to be easy for you and that the sun is always going to shine for you. We can't tell you that and be truthful about it. The road ahead of you is often going to be rough and the sun isn't always going to shine. That's one reason why your parents have been determined and why they are still determined that you shall have the best education possible — that you may be better prepared to meet those days when they do come, as they surely will. And right at this point is where the bank in your community enters into the picture. The bank in your community is interested in your success for the simple reason that the bank, if you are the right sort of an individual — one who meets his obligations, who can discipline himself to the place where he can spend less than he earns and thereby put something aside for that rainy day, when the road is rough and when the sun does not show its face, and who is. at the same time, determined to, as your grandfathers used to say, make his word his bond — will be glad to work with you in every possible way in helping you to get over the rough places and to tide you over when the days are dark and dreary. Those who are charged with the management of the bank in your community know that the success of the bank depends upon the overall success and prosperity of its customers. That is an economic fact and the bank’s officers, directors and employees are fully aware of that fact. If you have not already done so, about the first thing we would suggest you do, following your high school graduation, would be to start a bank account and then, when you have started that account, look after it in a fashion which will enable those in charge of the bank to know that you are thrifty, economical, dependable. The rest should be, for the most part, comparatively, or at least, a lot easier for you than it would otherwise have been. Stop in to see us at any time; the latch-string is on the outside for you.
