THE 1954 SHAMROCK The Foreword The 1954 presentation of the Shamrock is a lasting revelation of all our happy school days at Crittenden County High. The Shamrock tends to show the various ways that our school has given us Knowl- edge, Good Character, and Self-Reliance. We shall always remember our happy school days. The work that went along with the fun to make our school life successful will never be forgotten. Later in life we graduates may look at our 1954 Sham- rock and better remember those happy days at Crittenden High. May this be a lasting monument that we shall always cherish. GLEN PATMOR—Spans Editor The Crittenden County “Rockets,” successfully opened the 1953-54 basketball season, by defeating Alumni, Melber, and Salem in their first three games. The “Rockets” are doing very well this season under the direction of Mr. Ercel Little, our new basketball coach. The excellent performance of Donald Beavers has been a great asset in lead- ing the team to victory. We are looking forward to success for the entire season. This will take not only teamwork on the part of the players but cooperation and support of everyone. So lets get behind the team and boost them on to victory. This dress that Sarah McMican wears, is an example of the fine work that the home economic girls have done. The F.H.A. officers arc: Betty Shcwcraft. Betty Sue Green, Linda Lowery, Naomi Hodge, Arctta Crisp, Gustine Browning, Doris Wright. Jane Conyer, Mary Ruth Brasher, and Jetta Fritts. The agricultural department is an important phase of our school. The F.F.A. mem- bers are especially interested in becoming scientific farmers. The president of the F.F.A., Winfred Chandler, is shown in the picture with the trailer that was built at the shop. The three debaters in the picture that received letters last year are David Lynn, Mona Faye Hill, and Jimmie Martin. The other students: Linda Lowery, Betty Shewcraft. Merle Belt, and Billy Dixon received letters in Speech, having received a rating of excellent or superior in the speech festival held at Murray last spring. Lunch time is the most important part of the day. This is especially true at Crittenden, since we have our lunches served to us hot. after they have been well prepared by efficient cooks. Boys and girls are rapidly becoming interested in the business field. Our commer- cial department consists of 150 students, who are kept busy at all times with typing, bookkeeping, shorthand, and advanced office practices. Patsy Guess and David Lynn, editors of our newspaper, have been an asset to the commercial department. Mr. Horning, our much admired assistant principal, is also an ef- ficient librarian. MARION KENTUCKY CONGRATULATIONS! During recent years we have heard much about The American way of life. Sometimes we wonder if the expression is not over-used. About the time we are convinced that the term is over-used, then something happens to make us think that possibly it is not used often enough. Education has been, since the beginning of this republic, a thing upon which special emphasis has been placed, due, in large measure, to the fact that the members of each succeeding generation wanted the members of the next generation to have better educational opportunities and advantages than they did. As we have seen it, this has been one of the most unselfish ambitions exercised in connection with the develop- ment and growth of this country. Today, education is the most powerful thing in the world. It behooves this generation to see that the education which the young people of our country acquire is of the right type, quality and character. Young people as well as the older ones of us might well be frequently reminded of that axiomatic statement of President James A. Garfield when he said, Next in importance to freedom and justice is education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be maintained. If we are to keep America great then those who are charged with the responsibility of educating the youth of the land can but seriously consider the responsibilities which are theirs. Others of us, including the banks of our country, must make our contributions towards seeing that the processes of education are not thwarted nor hemmed in.
