Page 30 1 5, 1 11 ' ....ab..Jhhhnis Class Hisfory It seems that only yesterday the Class of 1960 began its long climb to the top. Defeated, but undaunted, it lost the Freshman-Sophomore Brawl on September 9, 1956. The first class officers it elected were these: Darce Hause, Presidentg Frank McLeod, Vice-President, and Darien Dietz, Secretary-Treasurer. Along with Mr. Karl Shirley, the class sponsor, the Class of 60 produced its first dance, the Spring Swing, and its first assembly, a variety show. As Sophomores, the Class of 1960 started off on the right foot by winning the Brawl against a larger freshman team. Darce Hause led the class as President once more, with Mel Field acting as Vice-President and Judy Butler as Secretary- Treasurer. The class sponsor was a new-corner to CHS, Mr. Lyle Roush. After presenting a rather unusual assembly, the Class of 1960 held a very successful dance labeled the Sputnik Spin. As Juniors, under the leadership of Mrs. Anne Gegg, the Class of '60 elected Bob Irwin Class President. Bob held this honor along with Darce Hause-Vice-President, Emily Hearn-Secretary, and Frank McLeod-Treas- urer. The 1960 Class Rings arrived in December, 1958, and, after pre- senting an informative assembly on Panamanian Independence Day, the Juniors produced the junior and Senior Prom and Banquet, giving the seniors a fine send-off. The dance and Banquet was based on the theme Say- onara, which means Good-bye. On September 1, 1959, the goal for the Class of 1960 was reached. They were Seniors! Jim McGloin led the class through its final year with the aid of his fellow officers: Bob Irwin, Vice-President, Darce Hause, Secretary, and Ruby Hall, Treasurer. With the aid of Mrs. Smith, the senior class sponsor, the lovely Snowflake Frolic was produced. The Class of 1960 had its leaders in every activity in CI-IS. Treading in the sea of matrimony are three of our own lovely girls: Emily Hearn is married to a Texas millionaire, Irene Meehan has wedded a Bulted Midgedaire, and Sandra Roscoe is married to Rex Daisey. On the local scene, we find Rex Daisey completing his Canal Zone electrical apprenticeship, Paul Leignadier taking the Panamanian Presidential Election by a landslide, and Bill Will as the business manager of the Colon Garbage Collection Agency. Bill's secretary is Joan Page. Marion Smith is com- pleting her college training to replace Mrs. Smith in English 12. At Coco Solo Hospital we find the situation confused, with Doris Payne and Jean Dockery as nurses, and Ellen Clute as a physical therapist. Reba Jones has just finished college and plans to replace Mr. Pfau when he retires as a science teacher. Michael McBride is writing comics for the PANAMA AMERICAN. Robin Morland has a job with the Grace Line shipping agency. Andy Nash is the United States Consul to Panama. Paul Kunkel is an ad- miral in the Panamanian Navy. His duties consist of bailing out a cayuco. Francisco Katz is the new chemist at the Balboa Brewery. As the scene shifts to the United States, we find a host of engineers from our alma mater. The engineers responsible for the electrical mishaps throughout the country are Danny Stanley, Hugo Tomp- kins, Felix Karpinski, and Peter Ender. Our mechanical engineers are Mel Field and john Peterson. Jim Will and Deane Campbell are aeronautical engineers, and Gerald I-Iilty is an architectural engineer. Zipping through the skies in a jet plane is our rugged speedster, LeRoy Barfield. Also in the sky, but watching out for the jet pilot, is John Marshall, flying a passenger planeg Leila Leon is his stewardess. Switching to the entertainment world, we find the world renowned pianist, Ramona Anderson, accompanying Judy Gray and her dancing horse in Carnegie Hall. Darce Hause, an interior decorator, is changing the interior of every theater on Broadway. Ruby Hall is a successful stenographer in New York and Diana Smith is a secretary in the same office. Sherley Littleton is teaching handicapped children. Brenda Daisey and Sarah Spector are also secretaries. In the various research plants throughout the country, we find Maurice Belanger, Jim McGloin, and Frank McLeod in the role of mad scientists. Ed Donahue is galavanting around the country-side capturing funny little animals for his biological research. Serving science in another way is Doug Phillips, who plans to be the first man to reach the moon. Good luck, Doug! Don Bruce plans to go to college-but for how long? Ut would be great to be a professional studentj. Among the more unusual occupations is Manford Blakcly's: he plans to be an educated bum. Jules Damiani plans to be a race-car driver. Bob Erwin plans to be a success and give his second million to Jim Will. Bill Weigle has become a motorcycle enthusiast. Ruth Himes is still in college. Joe Valdez is in the Air Force. Charles Lyew is a professor of music in the University of Panama. Dodd Jones has just become the new Commander of the French Navy. jack Sanders and Marion Leach are runnnig a garage in New York. Marion handles the dirty work. Dimity Pearce, Carolyn Peck, and Brenda Murray are guiding tourists up Mount Everest. Mike Stephenson is president of the National Newspaper-boy Syndicate. Ada Wynne is a homemaker. Carlos Fernandez is Spain's greatest bullfighter and is learning the art of hypnotizing bulls! 2 gr..-.gpg ? :s'7'i3 is-fr rn' 542 f9,g J' ' f:ig..:q' .g.-'ig s . ,:1jg1Z?:., - ' 5-52 f-:v55'4i . 5317339 Sk, , 15 Q: ,fa Y , Vi. .L Q I ww- ' '93 ? QUEEN DARCE AND HER COURT On Saturday, November 9, 1959, the Breakers Club was the scene of the annual Cristobal High School Home- coming Dance. The ballroom was decorated by the Girls Athletic Association and Chi Theta Sigma. The background for the queen's throne was formed by panels of yellow with QUEEN DA.RCE and the year l959 in blue. Yellow alamander blossoms outlined the platform, and the orchestra stand was outlined with double rows of exoria. jim Will, President of the Student Association, an- nounced the entrance of the queen and her court in the following order: Princess Virginia Roscoe, Princess of the Daisies, Daughter of the Morning Mist, wearing a floor-length gown of French blue net with an overskirt of light blue lace net. She was escorted by Co-Captain james Palumbo, Lord of the Red and White Peasants, Chief of the Cleaners of Uni- forms, and Defender of the Line. Princess Andra Lee Nash, Princess of the Lilies, Keeper of the Emerald, and Daughter of the Eveni.ng, wearing a silver and ice-blue satin gown. Princess Ruth Anne Himes, Princess of the Roses, Daughter of the Sunrise, wearing a mist-blue gown of embroidered pure silk. The flower girl was Lady Tessie Corrigan, Keeper of the Dewdrops, Daughter of the Moon, wearing a tiered dress of white net. Queen Darce I, Owner of the Flowers, Daughter of the Jewel, Lady of the Night and Ruler of Cristobal High School. She wore a gown of ruffled, yellow nylon, with a bodice and overskirt of yellow and white embroidered nylon. CoCaptain Peter Ender, Kight of the Blue and Gold, and Runner of the Fumble was her escort. After the procession, Captain Ender crowned Queen Darce with a handsome rhinestone crown, the gift of the senior class to Cristobal High School. Queen Darce carried an arm-bouquet of the same flowers and the escorts wore boutonnieres of matching flowers. For his outstanding play and team work during the football season, jimmy was selected as a Center on the all Canal Zone Inter- scholastic Football team. The honors were not to stop here, as he was also selected as a Co-Captain for the Canal Zone All-Star Bowl team. These honors truly exemplify the outstanding job that this young man contributed to his school, team, coaches, and fellow team members. His job as center for a single-wing football team has to be considered as one of the utmost importance on .the team. Playing in the mud and rain as we do here in the Canal Zone and snap- ping the ball back to a teammate from 4 to 15 yards behind the line of scrim- mage is no easy task. Jimmy did this job so well that he did not make a bad snap all year. Jimmy's leadership on and off the field was beyond reproach at all times. With these fine accomplishments behind him it is no wonder that Jimmy Palumbo was selected by the judges as the Most Valuable Football Player on the Cristobal High School Football Team for 1959-60. Congratulations, Jimmy, for a job well done and an honor well dererved. 7959 im pafumdo ,!'h 4'V K Page 77 C.H.S Baseball Team A , T 4 :kan f-'00, ff C114- J E. d ' Wfill Lar VVilder, Jules KNEELING QL. to RJ: john Cronan-Manager, Babe Marquar , jxm , ry Dgmani, Bobby Geddes, Brian Lutz.
