tfiSM i FOREWORD We, the staff of the 1965 Railroader, have attempted to maxe this book a record of our life at Crewe High School. Join us as we recall our experiences. May this edition give you fond memories - today and tomorrow. Sherry Pfirman and Marshall Ellett, Editors ’’Remembrance and reflection how allied! What thin partitions sense from thought divide! The opaque projector is adjusted by Mrs. Christine ClarK for use in English class. New School Activities This record of the activities of the stu¬ dent body of Crewe High School for the school year 1964-65 is portrayed through the re¬ flections of one of its graduates. Added to the regular academic courses was a third year of both Latin and French. For seniors who had not taken agriculture and mechanics, general mechanics was of¬ fered by the Agriculture Department. For the first time, eighth graders took class¬ room instruction in Drivers ' Education. One of the most important innovations in the school curriculum was the addition of our former community band, along with its director, Mrs. Dorothy Roberts. Another highlight of the year was the organization of a girls ' drill team by the girls ' physical education teacher, Miss Katie Presnell. Newcomers to the high school faculty were Mrs. Gloria Smith, English; Mrs. Wanda Padgett, history and geography; Miss Katie Presnell, girls ' physical education; and Mrs. Helen Wilson, librarian. The Crewe High band is assembled to furnish music at a football game. 4 French III students Virginia Pflegar, Julia Brown, Ann Taylor, and Cliff Olson look on as Linda Bradshaw uses the dual recorder. Create Vivid Recollections Mr. Jones, the first supervisor of education in Notto¬ way County, pays a visit to Crewe High School. Mrs. Bridgforth and Mr. Via await the Biology Pro¬ gram on E.T.V. Mr. Way land Jones, former history teacher of C. H. S., left the faculty to be¬ come the first supervisor of education for Nottoway County. Since the high school enrollment reached an all-time peak, Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson used her entire time for guidance services. An opaque projector, donated by the class of 1963, vitalized instruction in the English Department. Educational television has become an integral part of the Crewe High School cur¬ riculum. In October, the entire school building was equipped with facilities to receive and transform the UTV to regular FTV sets in time for the Goldwater-Johnson campaign procedures. In retrospect, 1964-65 completed a year of academic progress and achievement. The hours of homework, the college boards, the hectic pace are beginning to fade through a veil of sentiment. 5 Nancy Jane Flippen and Linda Mitchell are Drill Leaders. At the homecoming rally, drill teamers-- Linda Knicely, Becky Fox, Carolyn Cochran, Kay Roberts, and Susan Covington, admire a symbol of the Railroaders. Drill Team Adds Spark and Precision Drill Team officers. FRONT ROW: Linda Mitchell--Vice Pres.; Nancy Jane Flippen--Treasurer. Each student at Crewe High is a member of the S.C.A. The Council, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Christine Clark, is composed of the S.C.A. of¬ ficers, all class and club presidents, and a representative from each homeroom. The Council sponsors all assembly pro¬ grams including assemblies presented by indi¬ vidual clubs and the regularly scheduled South¬ eastern Assemblies. Library Club stimulates interest in reading The Library Club is a service club whose main objectives are to stimulate a greater in¬ terest in reading and to arouse a greater in¬ terest in the use of library facilities and books. This is accomplished by an assembly pro¬ gram, posters, bulletin boards, and the obser¬ vation of National Library Week and Book Week. The Club purchases additional books and audiovisual materials. It strives to improve library services and to improve the library’s appearance. The Library Club sells paperback books and Christmas cards and wrappings to raise the necessary funds. To welcome the new members, a supper was held at the Crewe Community Center. The new librarian, Mrs. Helen Wilson, serves as sponsor to the Library Club. Varsity Club promotes enthusiasm in Athletics The Varsity Club was organized in 1962 by a group of enthusiastic lettermen and their sponsor, Coach Golubic. Membership in this Club is limited to boys who have won the varsity letter in football, basketball, or baseball. The principles and objectives of the Club are to stimulate interest in the athletic program of Crewe High School, to promote sportsmanship, and to maintain a high respect for the varsity letter. Every year the Varsity Club presents a rookie-of-the-year award, commonly known as the Rinky-Dink Award,” to some non-letter- man of the football team who has contributed the most enthusiasm and support to the team effort. Another project of the Club this year was contributing $100 to the Athletic Association. The Club ' s social project planned for this year was a Christmas dance some time during the holidays. As in preceding years, the Varsity Club has printed and sold official programs at all home football games and has printed football schedules which were placed in store windows in Crewe. Club officers: Johnny Crittenden (President), J. R. Jones (Reporter), Bobby Williamson (Vice President), Vaughn Bozman (Secretary), Billy Fox (Treasurer). Lettermen become overjoyed at Pep Rally. Pat Mason and Laura Jean Jenkins assist in the Varsity Club ' s money-making program. Senior members of the football squad receive letters. Railroader Staff preserves school memories The Railroader is devoted to the reflection of every phase of Crewe High School activity. It devotes sections to the faculty, classes, clubs, organizations, activities, and advertise¬ ments. The Railroader derives revenue from sub¬ scriptions by students and organizations and by advertisement by local business. We have attempted to preserve the life of the students in formal and candid situations. We are grateful to all the faculty, students, and advertisers who assisted in many ways. Our special thanks go to our sponsors, Mrs. Juanita Yates and Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson. Extra coverage has been made possible by the addition of eight pages. The splendid sup¬ port of all concerned has made possible this improvement. We hope that this pictorial record of events of this year will revive and sweeten your mem¬ ories in the future. We have enjoyed compiling this record and hope that each of you will be pleased.
