Those eighth graders are now known as C. H. S. ' s working juniors. The eighth graders participated in quite a few extra-curricular activities. The boys played mightily on the Midget team (which went undefeated that year) and the Midget cheerleaders ' lungs worked just as mightily. We were very proud also to have Faye Thompson as our nominee in the first Homecoming Court. Our dance held in May brought out the entire school, in spite of their favorite saying, Go ' way, ya ' II are too young. As freshmen, we were still the largest and loudest class in C. H. S. This time our boys and girls were eligible for varsity sports which they entered with much en¬ thusiasm and much bench sitting. In the spring, Mrs. Bullock ' s Virginia History clas¬ ses took a trip to Williamsburg. It was en¬ joyed by all except for the nutty few who were almost kept down there. At the end of the year, we were still considered squirts but we held our ground firmly! When we finally became sophomores, we were treated with more respect and our noise was accepted as part of a school day. The girls were asked into clubs and the boys gave up their bench seats for a little playing action. Biology class perked up in the spring with the return of Nancy Lou and our dissection of dead, but very active frogs! Our homecoming float flew the banner, Sophomores—Nuf Said! At last after a long, hard climb, most of us became juniors, although we lost a few classmates along the way. And what could be more exciting than the day we received our class rings? Then to top the whole year off, our Junior-Senior arrived and after much hard work, our dream of giving a wonderful prom and banquet came true. Now, at the close of our history, we would like to wish the seniors Good Luck and leave with the underclassmen this reminder, We will be the seniors next year. Each member must earn a total of ten points a semester to continue his membership. These points may be earned by operating the film pro¬ jector for classes, by working as assistant librarians, by reading to the grade school pupils, and by planning the trophy case displays. For its assembly program, the club portrayed famous lovers from literature. Many exciting and thrilling experiences made it worthwhile and interesting. We, the staff of The 1 957 Railroader, enjoyed every working moment, and we hope this annual will be equally enjoyable for you. We are indebted to Miss Kay Crittenden, who again gave of her time and service to take many of the pictures in this book. We are further indebted to these homeroom salesmen who assisted Jimmy Dunn in making the book a finan¬ cial success: Dottie Bullock, Daisy Mae Weeks, Jane Colley Wright, Frances Anne LaNeave, Mary Anderson, Sharon Robertson, Bill Noell, Bright Thompson, Betty May, Carol Roberts, Jean Lawson, Joyce Simonton, and Bernard Schutt. We wish to express our appreciation to the officials of the Norfolk and Western Railway who were so helpful and accommodating when we made our “long” trip from Blackstone to Crewe to take pictures on “The Powhattan Arrow.” Our thanks extend also to the club and class officers who were willing to participate in this picture-taking activity, and to Beverly Spencer who joined the staff in the second semester. All good things must end, and so it is with our journey. We trust that you have enjoyed it. In parting, we would remind you that a second sec¬ tion of this Special Train No. 1 1 will come to you in the form of an eight- page supplement in the late summer or at the beginning of the fall session. • JUDY OWEN, EDITOR 64 YEARBOOKS 1 ■ 4
