The Drama Department showed its endorsement of the military by presenting two plays based on World War II. Stala.g' 17 , presented for the second time at Cretin, spotlighted a barracks in a POW camp in Ger- many. Performed in the 'U' on the north side of the Cretin gym, the staging became realistic when the actors made their entrances through real doors with real gusts of wind blowing in each time they did. In his first role on the Cretin stage, Jim Banick, starring as Seften, was named 'Best Actor' by the Cretin Drama Club. In order to match or perhaps surpass his extrava- ganzas of recent years, Mr. Charles J. Berg, drama director, presented South Pacific with a cast of hun- dreds, and six hula dancers. 'Pacific' performed to SRO crowds the four nights it played in spring. Making her debut as Nellie Forbush, Frances Countryman wooed the audiences and was named 'Best Actress' for her charming portrayal of the cock-eyed optimist. Joan Jardine also shared the role with Miss Countryman. Mary Pat Gleason was chosen 'Best supporting Actress' for her portrayal of Bloody Maryg Steve Steiner was 'Best supporting Actor' for the role of Billis. The Christiansen Award, for outstanding contribu- tion to the drama department, was awarded to Tom Volpe.
