R-., September-The Cretin Student Council began its second year of operation. Besides running this year's nine mixers the Council also organized homecoming and mid-winter weeks. The one hundred and eight member council, with two voting delegates and one alternate from each advisory, also acted on numerous proposals, ranging from library policy to the out-of- uniform uniform. President Harry Tschida., assisted by First Vice- President Nick Coleman, also instituted individual class-councils, led by the class coordinators. Vince Walker, senior class coordinator, organized the senior class trip this year. Tom Lionetti led the juniors in setting up the JS and the juniors' class rings, while Paul Ockuly, sophomore class coordinator, organized all of the sophomore mixers. Senior Delegates: L. Borer, S. Cross Country, led by seniors John Mulfort and Chuck Sawyer, came into its own this year. The season's climax was reached when Cretin defeated Benilde 25-30, Ben- ilde's first loss ever in conference play. Leading up to the Benilde win were trounces over Hill, Brady, and De LaSalle by scores of 15-48, 18-44, and 1'7-45, respec- tively. On a windy day at St. Thom- as, the harriers won 17-46 to clinch the first Cretin conference Cross Country title. Coach A1tier's team placed Mulfort, Sawyer, and junior Bill Miles on the A1l-Con.fer- ence Team. The Raiders gave a strong team performance in state and took sec- ond behind St. Cloud Cathedral. John Mulfort gave a fine individ- ual performance to capture fifth. The JV had a promising season with a 3-2 conference record. twinkle twinkle littlestar how i wonder who YQ!! who you are who you are The Drama Department showed its endorsement of the military by presenting two plays based on World War II. Stala.g' 17 , presented for the second time at Cretin, spotlighted a barracks in a POW camp in Ger- many. Performed in the 'U' on the north side of the Cretin gym, the staging became realistic when the actors made their entrances through real doors with real gusts of wind blowing in each time they did. In his first role on the Cretin stage, Jim Banick, starring as Seften, was named 'Best Actor' by the Cretin Drama Club. In order to match or perhaps surpass his extrava- ganzas of recent years, Mr. Charles J. Berg, drama director, presented South Pacific with a cast of hun- dreds, and six hula dancers. 'Pacific' performed to SRO crowds the four nights it played in spring. Making her debut as Nellie Forbush, Frances Countryman wooed the audiences and was named 'Best Actress' for her charming portrayal of the cock-eyed optimist. Joan Jardine also shared the role with Miss Countryman. Mary Pat Gleason was chosen 'Best supporting Actress' for her portrayal of Bloody Maryg Steve Steiner was 'Best supporting Actor' for the role of Billis. The Christiansen Award, for outstanding contribu- tion to the drama department, was awarded to Tom Volpe. The Cretin gridders compiled a conference record of 2 wins and 4 losses, while finishing the season with a 3-5-1 mark. After a 6-6 tie with Winsted Holy Trinity, the Raiders went on to defeat Benilde 42-0, and Blooming'- ton Lincoln 13-6. These two wins were split by a crushing' 61-0 loss at the hands of Rochester Lourdes. The Raiders then lost to confer- ence foes De LaSalle, St. Thomas, and Brady, and non-conference Superior by scores of '7-0, 14-12, 21-6, and 14-'7 respectively. In the season's finale the Raiders came back to upset Hill 12-0. All-Conference honors went to Dan Russell, Dave Karel, and Tom Jessen, with Russell being' named All-State center. The final season record for the B- Squad was 3-2. Varsity Football, above: lst Row: D. Karel, J. McDermott, L. Van Gem- ert, J. Brown, D. Hill, D. Swoboda, C. Noel, S. Woessner, L. Pates. 2nd Row: M. In its initial season, the soccer team, coached by Brother James Miller, stressed youth and fundamentals. The final varsity record was 1-10-2. In Cretin's first soccer game, the team overcame inexperience to outscore St. Thomas 2-0 in non-conference play. After the initial win the team failed to score dur- ing the next three games, losing to Minnehaha Academy 2-0, St. Thomas 2-0, and White Bear 3-0. Pat Smith broke the scoring slump in a 4-1 loss to Blake. In the return game with Minnehaha Academy, Cretin, led by Captain John Volpe, held on for a 2-2 tie. After losing a close game at Shattuck 3-2, the Raiders went to Breck and lost 4-1. Alexandar Ramsey had too much for Cretin as they overpowered the first year squad '7-0. After losing 2-0 to Benilde at home, the soccer team traveled to Richfield and was shutout 4-0. In a hardfought battle and probably Cretin's best game of the season, the Raiders were defeated by State Champion Edina 3-1. All-Conference honorable men- tion went to fullback Roger Moder. The B-Squad finished a promising and successful season with a 4-2-3 record. For more than thirty years stu- dents have mastered the processes of black and white photography, and have proven indispensible to the school newspaper and yearbook for their work in this field. This year's membership, twenty-five students, worked under the direction of Mr. Haag for their own personal satisfaction and to render services to differ- ent organizations, such as the religion and military departments. All of the pictures used in the school newspaper and some of those used in this yearbook were developed by the Camera Club. Camera Club, at right: Sitting: J. Donch, R. Mat- thews, T. Kovarik. Attending only half of the possi- ble matches offered in the Twin Cities, the team lost members steadily despite the efforts of Br. Peter, moderator, and Tom Wegler, president. Due to the loss of members, the team barely managed to retain its National Forensic League rating. With all mem- bers but one returning, the team can only look to the future. Cretin won championships at Austin's Holi- day Tournament, by downing Benilde 77-52 in the title game, and Region Four Championship, by defeating Hill 76-66. In CCC play Cretin proved a strong team throughout the season, defeating Hill 89-51, 86- 583 Benilde 56-40, 39-273 Brady 63-55, '70-463 St. Thomas 67-60, but lost to De La. Salle by scores of 51-49, 54-53, and a 59-53 loss to St. Thomas caused the Raiders to tie for second with De La Salle. Named to the All Conference team were Terry McMahon and Jack Tamble, with Tamble being selected Conference MVP. In the State Tournament, Cretin edged Owa- tonna Marion in overtime 70-60, and dropped a 66-65 decision to Champion Rochester Lourdes. Cretin also fell to St. Thomas 63-58. Cretin's band, under the direction of Mr. Robert Paulson, celebrated its 50th anniversary with over 40 public appearances. This very busy and hard working band proudly represented their school not only at as- semblies and games but also carried the name of Cretin to literally thousands of people at their Winter Concert and the 50th Anniversary Concert at the St. Paul Audl- torium. Recognized as one of the top high school bands in the state, they also performed out of the state when they presented two concerts in the Chicago area.. A new and colorful addition to the band is the Los Amigos, a take-off of the Baja Marimba. Very popular, this band, led by senior Kevin VonFeldt, performed at the Father-Son Banquet, Mid-Winter Dance, and the Cretin Talent Show. Other bands that stem from the Cretin Band are the Concert Band, the Stage Band, the Pep Band, the Dance Band, and the Marching Band, headed by band Major Thomas Volpe. Band, bottom row: M. The participants in Freshman sports, with three new coaches, up- held an old tradition of winning as they displayed a combined 14-4-1 record. If present trends continue, Cre- tin should again be a power in the CCC football race, due to the un- defeated Frosh football team. In coach Rick Smoliak's first coaching assignment at Cretin, his little known Raiders sported a 6-0-1 record. Freshman Basketball also had a winning season thanks to Derham Hall. Due to the A and B squad teams hogging the Cretin gym, first year coach Paul Perley's team found it hard to find a place to practice. The Derham Hall gym was that place in which the Freshman Raid- ers worked for a 6-4 overall record. The season was short but perfect for the Freshman hockey team, who completed the season with an ab- breviated 2-0 record. Both the length of the season and the teams success were due to new coach Jack Dale, who had to leave his coaching duties to participate in the Olympic trials. Freshmen football, below: fby rowsj D. In conference play the Raiders out- skated Brady 5-43 Benilde 7-3, 8-2, De La Salle 5-0, 4-3, St. Thomas 4-0, 6-2: and St. Bernard's 6-0, and 3-1. Conference losses came at the sticks of St. Agnes 4- 3, 2-lg Hill 6-2, 5-45 and Brady 6-4. After losing the first game of the State Tournament 4-2 to Brady, the Raiders came back to win over St. Thomas and Hill. Tony Byrne was the only Raider named to the All Tourney team. Excellent organization by league president Greg Van Dyke accounts for the league's success. The league consists of forty students, five on a team. The home alley for Cretin is Ran-Ham, the league also travels to Hafner's Hillcrest, St. Bernard's and North Star. Cretin won the championship during the first half of the season with a record of 24-8. Tom Wegner, secretary of the league has a high average of 191. For example, the Rifle Team, under the moderation of Sgt. Stock, spent numerous hours after school practicing for their various matches during the year. This year the team defeated Cameron for the first time, Cretin also placed fifth at St. John's at Delafield, Wisconsin. Dan Stuart, Pat Hickey, Pat 0'Malley, Jerry Zapetillo, and Pete Martinson were this year's letter-winners.
