none of us would be here tonight. we, the graduating class of 1967, represent the cretin of the present. we realize, however, that we would not be here at all if it were not for the cretin of the past. cretin high school has a long and honored tradi- tion in the city of st. paul. while we are here commem- orating the end of our four years at cretin, let us go back to another century and look if we can at cretin's real beginning. the christian brothers came at the invitation of father john ireland in 1871 to help educate the boys in what was then a rough frontier town of st. paul. in 1889, the brothers, now well established in this area, moved into a new building at sixth and main streets. the building was named cretin after st. paul's first bishop who was a pioneer in promoting catholic edu- cation in minnesota. from this simple beginning in downtown st. paul, cretin has grown to encompass several acres, two contrasting buildings and what is more important, over 1200 boys from all parts of the city. john ireland, our most famous archbishop, was often quoted as saying, 'if there is one thing in my life that i am proud of, it is the fact that i brought the christian brothers to st. paul.' we, the graduating class are also proud and grate- ful to the archbishop for bringing the christian broth- ers to st. paul. in their 96 years in this area, the chris- tian brothers have been responsible for educating thousands of young men who might not otherwise have had a chance to receive a catholic education. working hand in hand with the brothers down through the years have been .many outstanding lay- men whose dedication has been an example to all of us. these men have given much of themselves to their students and they will never be forgotten. as we look back over our four years we truly real- ize the value of the intellectual disciplines that we have been exposed to, yet what we feel is even more important is the knowledge that we have gained through a personal relationship with our teachers. no amount of abstract learning can replace the one inv- aluable insight into life that a teacher may have given us. such appreciation is not self evident to an under- classman. it is only as we end our four years and are able to look back and assess our personal gains that we truly realize the tremendous example our teach- ers have put before us. another great opportunity cretin has given is the chance to make 290 different friends. it has given us a chance to extend ourselves beyond our own small world and learn from the experiences and problems of others. each friendship has been a new and enlighten- ing experience. they have helped us realize that the only true education is a shared education. it is our sincere hope that these friendships which appear to be ending at this time are only beginning and that they will be continued throughout life. this is what cretin really means. it is much more than the walls and several acres it covers. these are only finite boundaries. cretin lives in the thousands of young men that have passed through its doors. to- night, we, the class of 1967, join that number. it is our sincere hope that we in our lives will exemplify the ideals of cretin as well as all those who have gone before us. i think we owe a tremendous debt of grati- tude to our lay faculty and to our brothers, and i know in the many years ahead of us, we will all hold a spe- cial place in our hearts for cretin and its teachers, and i hope they will for us.- john cragg 70 ,nan there is no one in this auditorium tonight who has not been continually learning since the day of his birth, and who will not continue to do so until the day he dies. the complete person is one who makes the most of what he learns. just as education is a major part of life, so too is life a major part of education. education is walking up to the doors for the first time, and being a little bit he itant about that first step. it's discovering that the world is a much bigger place than you thought it was, and that it is just as easy to make thirty friends as it is to make three. education is finding out that a whole new world exists at the high school after the classrooms have closed, and that memories consist of the friends you make, as well as the books you read. it's taking on your own project, with all the risks and responsibilities put squarely on your shoulders, and when the task is done, feeling a certain sense of accomplishment that you have never felt before. it's the first meeting with failure, and finding the courage and the optimism to turn it into a personal success. it's realizing that every action, whether done by others or yourself, can, and should be a successful learning experience. education is rubbing elbows with a classmate for four years, and then in one minute finding out that he's an entirely different person than you imagined him to be. his outward actions may remain the same, but your impression of him has changed permanently. it's looking on the other side of the desk for a per- son instead of a teacher, and finding a friend instead of a task master. education is coming to the conclusion that in or- der for people to come to you, you must first go to them. it's the realization that true happiness is the re- sult of positive action, and that he who acts, lives. education is learning to overcome fear. the fear of accepting new ideas and new philosophies. it's the ability to leave yourself open to new concepts. the wisdom to evaluate an idea honestly, and the courage to accept something which conflicts with what you had previously accepted. it's slamming that locker shut for the last time . . . walking through the halls once more . . . and realizing that every moment is a last time . . . and that the ac- tions done now will soon be actions ofthe past. finally, if education does nothing else for the man, it develops in him two powers . . . the power to think . . . and the power to thank. -dan flesher 71 ackermann, karl . . , 'vesuvius' . . . sgt . . .fond of phy- sics . . . rivals trudeauls trombone in band . . . warner, graham, trudeau adrian, anthony . . .
