This purpose explains in part the extensive eFforts put forth by the teachers in educating Cretin students. Although the five phases of life at Cretin - Religion, Social, Activities, Athletics and Mili- tary-are distinct, they all serve to develop a well-rounded Christian Gentleman. The reason for publishing the Cretinite is to recapture some of the highlights-successes and near- successes-in the varied life of the typical Cretin cadet. It maybe a source of encouragement for the underclassmen and a means of keeping bright the happy memories of the seniors. - mW3g,,5S'::f'QN3,13x.,ffwS ,K X ,- My X W, 6 eel, wi wwf ,W .5 ,Q QM, 5,1 ,iizg b we . 1353-.N,i., 4 , Si iii iw Q ' hwsefsllsxkrgw ,r Vw X fw..,3,,A51, ,Q vii ,fffsfk kay , 2 .4.,ff,.,w 4. 1 'Kffffe 2 , H523 Q 51535: f' 1 ,mv e2?l'i.?S4 3655 AX MT, 5:5252 YN M 4' iizizi X' . Q lu FAC ULT Brother Walter Assistant Principal, Guidance On young man has to make is what field of higher education he should enter-if any. We are privileged to have Brother Walter as g a wise decision A e of the most important decisions a our counselor in reachin recognized expert in the field of guidance Brother has, over the past four years, kept an up-to-date file on the scholastic achieve- ments of each member of the class of '56. During the senior year he calls the seniors ' t h in o is office for a personal interview. Broth- er guides them into the fields where th ' en' high interests lie and gives them a clear pic- ture of their capabilities. Brother Walter has helped many of us reach a satisfactory tinal decision. Cretin Brother Felix Principal, Director l , Director, has attained one of his primary goals - an outstanding spirit of co-operation among the entire student body In k' . ma ing himself available to cadets seeking his ad vice, Brother has helped many boys solve seemingly insurmountable problems. Brother h d ' ' as ma e it a point to know as many stu- dents as possible. It is impossible i th' n is small space to name all the accomplishments f o Brother Felix during his career as an ad- ministrator, but his success at Cretin speaks for itself. n his two years at Cretin Brother Felix, Brother Kevin Assistant Principal The class of '56 has been privileged to have B th ' ' ro er Kevin as Sub-Director and guide through the four years in high school. Modest in all his actions, Brother has set a f. . ine example for us to follow His calmness and understanding are especially impressive. WM . . . . r six years as principal in Kansas City as a background, Brother Kevin has ver Y capably assumed and executed his duties as A . . . . sslstant Principal. Along with these numer- Olusduties and obligations Brother cond t , ucs a religion class, cheerfully chauffeurs the teams, and often substitutes for absent teach- ers. Busy in the word for Brother Kevin. Administration L. . Brother Lucian Assistant Principal, Discipline One of the most respected Brothers on the Cretin faculty is Brother Lucian, Dean of Discipline. Brother is well known and esteem- d f e or his fair but strict administration of justice. Besides his position as Director of Discipline, Brother Lucian is engaged in various functions around the school. ln addi- tion to being moderator of the Junior Class, Brother teaches sociology to three senior classes, and is an enthusiastic advocate of the crusade against immoral and harmful literature. Brother L. Josephus An influential advisor, an able teacher, and a rough and tough coach, all these are characteristic of Brother L. Josephus. Brother has really roamed the field of education dur- ing his six-year stay here, but especially during his last four as advisor of room 203. He is the only senior advisor who has re- mained for the entire four years with the same advisory. During this time he taught religion, Latin, and history. Brother very ably guided the class of '56 as class moder- ator for two years. In addition to this, Broth- er has been successful as coach of the B- squad in football, baseball, and basketball. This year he was appointed Athletic Direc- tor of all the Cretin teams. Professor Conroy Although he is a newcomer to advisory lll, Professor Conroy certainly is well known among the student body. Mr. Con- roy's practical advice and helpful sugges- tions toward the solutions of the problems of his students have made him a favorite of his mathematics, physiology, and biology classes. His quiet ways have left an indelible mark on the minds of his students. Brother William During his five years at Cretin, Brother William, moderator of the Senior Class, has acquired a reputation for giving practical advice to anyone seeking his aid. His witty answers and timely quips enliven his English classes and make them interesting for all. Brother William has been su-ccessful as Director of the Dramatics Club. Under his leadership the Dramatics Club has acquired an outstanding reputation with such produc- tions as Arsenic and Old Lace, Annie Get Your Gun, On Borrowed Time, Oklahoma Dude, You Can't Take It With You, Julius Caesar, and H.M.S. Pinafore. Senior Advisors ,. g ' Brother Victor One of Brother Victor's crowning achieve- ments in his work at Cretin is his success as moderator of the hockey team. lt is mainly through his efforts that we have our splendid rink, and practically all new uniforms for the team. Brother Victor has also manifested a deep interest in his own advisory, vigorously sup- porting any class drives, collections, or ac- tivities in which they participate. ln spite of his busy schedule, Brother also has always found time for any problems his students might bring to him. Brother George Brother George, a veteran in the field of teaching, but a newcomer at Cretin, had the distinction of starting out as a senior ad- visor in his first year. Combining his teaching experience with lively class discussions, Brother has reached a very desirable teach- er-pupil relationship in and out of his classes. lf variety is the spice of life, the busy moderator of 202 is really having a ball. Besides teaching senior religion, iunior Eng- lish and freshman algebra, he supervises the publication of the excellent school paper. Mr. Tierney Mr. Tierney, a Cretin graduate '46, is the popular advisor of 106. He works hard to instill in his students and basketball players a sense of duty and pride which he feels Cretin students should have. He has worked untiringly with his basket- ball teams, but, leaving nothing to chance, he and his wife are grooming two stars and a cheerleader iso farl who should see lots of action - around 1968, We are all happy and proud that Mr. Tierney has associated himself as teacher, coach and friend, with the Cretin cadets. C LASS C F '5 8 Brother Benedict, Sophomore Moderator, and the class officers Tom Mclvlohon, Wayne Thein, Terry Cummings, and Richard Kling discuss coming events. , Sophomoritis-that contagious disease that hits the freshmen at the end of their first year-is very prominent in the present sophomore class. They came back t-o Cretin with a new outlook on life. In their first year, they were shy, reserved and docile. But many changes came about during the sum- mer. As sophomores, they sought to have frivolity reign in their little cliques. Attempt- ing to skip military, trying to squeeze one more ielly-bean out of the machine, show- ing the freshmen the swimming pool, and other antics were tested throughout the year. However, their mood changed again with the coming of spring. They began to realize their responsibilities and to accept the fact that they soon would be upperclassmen. Under the leadership of Brother Benedict and the class officers, the class is destined for a profitable iunior year. 'st row, left to right: L. Cardinal, J. Stifter, Buchmeir, D. Anderson, G. His past is untarnished, his future holds in store four of the best years of his life. At first he is looked down upon by a few, laughed at by many, and talked about by all. As the year wears on every one recognizes his position and, hav- ing gained some -confidence, he settles down to the business of high school. As the boys realize their potential and discover new tal- ents, they will continue to grow in conti- dence and knowledge. The freshman class of i955-i956 has been outstanding in all phases of school life. Probably the outstanding characteris- tics of the present freshmen are their spirit of generosity and their willingness to co- operate with the faculty. During the school year, the freshman have studied well, sup- ported the teams and consistently led in the weekly contributions for the missions. If the boys make as much progress in the next few years as they did this year, the class of i959 will be truly outstanding. .f row, left to right: W. Altier, F. Buchmeier Campbell, G. Atkins, G. The usual top ratings for con-cert work, solo and ensemble competition are the result of hard work and organization. Because of the excellence of their performances, the boys have been invited to provide entertainment for numerous public and parochial schools and civic organizations. ln addition, the band plays for football and basketball games, assemblies, and military reviews. This year they played in the Winter Carnival parade and the Easter parade. ,Rhythm Raiders Music, whether it be iazz, the blues, or iust folk songs, is a biect appreciated by everyone. Probably no one appreciates it ore than a musician himself. The Rhythm Raiders are no excep- on. The organization is made up of regular band members who ire willing to devote some extra time to practice and who also ieet the qualifications set by the faculty. Practices are held regularly every Wednesday evening for NO hours, the down-beat is given by Brother Francis, the director ind moderator of the club. Although the primary numbers played ire popular or modern songs and dance hits, songs of the past ire always welcomed. ln addition to presenting the half-time entertainment at the iasketball games, the Rhythm Raiders have taken part in a num- :er of formal engagements. The musicians have played at the Bead Shepherd Home, St. Mary's Hospital in Minneapolis, the Llotel Capri, Our Lady of Peace High School, and have made heir television debut on the 9-Teen Club. Highlighting the school year are two performances for the general public-the Christmas and Spring concerts. At these per- formances guest soloists from other schools demonstrate their special skills. The presentation of Military command positions. Many types of time entertainment were presented for the student body this year. Due to the great anticipation involved, the highlight of the Assemblies was the appointments for the command positions in the Cadet Military Corps. It was a treat to be entertained by Joss Wind, an English comedian, and to be mystified by Chan Loo, a capable ma- gician. The Taflin trio, iuggling and balancing artists, were experts on the unsupported ladder, the secret of which was to keep the ladder rockin '. The group has been extremely active and its members most cooperative. Meetings have been held on the third Monday of each school month beginning in October. Problems of the band are discussed, ways and means of raising money are proiected, and social ac! tivities for the boys are planned. Business meetings are followed by speakers or musical entertainment, and an informal coffee hour helps the membership to become well acquainted. This past year a new idea was introduced when Mr. Veith invited the band boys to a meeting and the exact procedure of a band rehearsal was enacted. The Band Parents has taken upon itself to keep the instru- ments in repair and has purchased many new instruments throughout the years. This year the parents bought four new trombones for the school, and intend to sponsor the band on its annual excursion to Chicago in August. Social events for the boys are sponsored by the parents. The Freshman Mixer in No- vember provides an opportunity for the Freshman boys and par- ents to become acquainted. The Annual Band Dance was held in the Women's City Club in February, at which the band was host to the student body and the Winter Carnival Royalty The Band Banquet was held in May at the Northwood Country Club at which the seniors received their band pins. Football Hindered throughout the season by various injuries, the '56 edition of the Raider football team placed a mediocre fourth i place with l-3 record in league competition and a 3-4 overall record. Regis Took advantage af long runs and an intercepted pass to defeat Cretin in our first game of the season, 20-O. S.P.A. proved a formidable foe in the second game, but Crefin's power proved too much. In the last five minutes of play, Jack Klein climaxed a seventy-yard drive with a touchdown which put the score at 19-13 and the Randolph Street football title. Concordia became the next team to fall by the wayside as the rampaging Raiders put them away by a score of 32-6. Cretin seemed to have reached its peak in this game. After this however, things didn't fare too well with defeats coming at the hands of De La Salle C21-OJ and St. Thomas L39-63. St. Cloud Cathedral found no mercy in their hearts for our Homecoming celebration by shocking our stalwarts by a score of 33-O. ln spite of an unsuccessful season five Raiders were chosen on the C.C.C. Taking over as Athletic Director in 1945 and relinquishing that position two years ago to Brother Kevin, Wee has coached varsity football and baseball the entire time and had charge of the cagers until '54, In these years the Cretin teams have indeed exemplified themselves, bringing many trophies to the halls of Cretin. Wee has taken a position at Boy's Totum Town, and he can no longer devote full time to his former responsibilities. We at Cretin would like to express our appreciation for all that Mr. Walsh has done in helping to make the Cretin cadet a man. Finding a new football coach of top caliber must have in- deed presented Brother Felix and the board with a perplex- ing problem, however, with the aid of the Holy Spirit it seems that a very splendid person has come to fill in this vacancy. This man is Tom Warner who himself was a Brothers' boy, having graduated from De La Salle, Minneapolis. Concerning the selection, Brother Felix stated, It was difficult for the board to come to a decision because of the many excellent applicants. We feel that Mr. Warner is well qualified for he has teaching, as well as coaching, experi- ence. He knows the teaching system of the Christian Brothers. Although the Class of '56 will have no opportunity to be under the tutorage of Mr. Warner, we would like to wish Tom and the team the best of luck in all their endeavors, and we will be looking forward to seeing the Raider football team in action. nv - Q-.' x X f I W I SQCI A L F Queen Ann 0 G is we Q -9- Hifi-iii f :+: Hf , Qsg ii, E 'T 'O i i 4 Sf 94 L... . 3 i sax ef C be 31 W 9 0 ., D i Q ' +- ,A iiiii .Yr i W O 0 ,.. ,os 2, if G 0 ' F4 0 0 .f' ' U37 0 59 JO X' 'R f W ry crgcir pin I Mu M etMcAI ' Gerry Burke HCJMI ff Cretin's Homecoming Donce on Fridcy, Ocioh 28, marked The opening of o weekend of fest Ties. Following an excellent dinner the fathers and sons sat back to watch ex-Cretinite Tom McNellis present a program of mystitying magic. Next on the agenda were University of Minnesota Football stars, Dick McNa- mara and Bob Rasmussen, and Bob Haugh from St. Thomas College. They provided interesting entertainment by answering questions asked by the audience on athletics and many other subiects. President H Terry Sullivan may be best known among underclassmen for his athletic accomplishments, but the seniors all know Tige's by his big smile and 'his willingness to help in any school project. Affable and congenial, Terry has been an advisory officer for four years and a class officer for three years, having assumed the presidency of the class this year. As a four-year member of the football team, Terry developed as a top-grade fullback. In addition, he has been a key men on the Raider track team for four years, running the relays and the medium distances. Clas Terrence M. Sullivan, Vice-President The senior class has recognized the quality of outstanding leadership in the person of Jack Klein, class vice-president. Jack has been a class officer for three years and an advisory officer for four years. This impressive record speaks for itself. As a letterman in both football and hockey, he has shown his sportsman-like conduct and his ability to get along with others. In hockey he played wing on the first line and finished second in the scoring column last season. Jack is a member of the Benildus Club and participates in many other extra- curricular activities. As a senior in military, Jack has attained the rank of second lieutenant and the position of a company commander. Scholastically, Terry is also a good worker, having gained two merit medals. He hopes to finish his education at Notre Dame University. Valedictorian Clasi Climaxing four years of hard work, David Moga finished first in the class and David B. Moga was named Valedictorian. This honor signifies many hours of arduous study and concentration, and Dave may well be proud of his achievement. His outstanding scholarship is also exhibited by the fact that he has won four merit medals and is a two-year member of the National Honor Society. Friendly and unassuming, Dave is always willing to offer a helpful suggestion or assist a classmate with the problems of everyday classwork. He is a good mixer, and, as its leading exponent, has brought Turtle Lake to the world. Active in extra-curriculars, Dave was o member of the Physics Club, Offiicers' Club, Homecoming Committee, and was an editor on the '56 Cretinite staff. Officers Secretary Enthusiastic and energetic, Louie Bader is known as The Great Organizer by his classmates. During his four years, Lou has been one of the more active members of our class. As a participant in Junior Achievement of St. Paul, L-ou has won several awards and scholarships for his eftort. His qualities of leadership are evident, for he has been an advisory officer for four years and a class officer for the last two years. As a senior, Lou was general chairman of the Homecoming committee, con- tributing significantly to the success of that aftair. Heading the Cheerleaders, Lou became known as Mister School Spirit to his fellow Cretinites. Louis G. Bader X . Treasurer George Hebaus, treasurer of this year's senior class, is the quiet, level-headed type. He is known throughout the school as a persistent worker who has set high goals for himself. An advisory olticer for two years, George was elected as a class otticer last year. Since that time he was chosen by the faculty to hold the rank of lieutenant- colonel in the ROTC corps here at Cretin. He is also commander of the second platoon crack drill unit. As a junior, his meritorious service and leadership garnered for him a Chicago Tribune award. George is our intellectual giant. Naturally, he has won four merit medals while maintaing a 94W average during his four years at Cretin. He is also a two-year member of the National Honor Society and has won several awards for excellence Leaders in Latin translation. George G. Hebaus Scilutcitorian A close second in the race for top scholastic honors in the class of i956 is quiet, easy-going John Beck. John has succeeded in combining athletics and scholastics in such a way that he has excelled in both, while letting neither interfere with the other. He has won four merit medals during his sojourn at Cretin, and, recognizing his ability and acknowledging his effort, the faculty made him a two-year member of the National Honor Society. While participating on the varsity hockey and foot- ball teams, John was always impressive with his methodical and driving play. John T. Beck BF' Dick RICHARD B.
