Illtgllut To TIIE BROTHER SUPERIOR, PRINCIPAL, TE.ACHERS AND STUDENTS OF CRETIN HIGH SCHOOL IN SAINT PAUL: The publication of the year book of the ac- celerated class of 1945 Offers me the oppor- tunity to express to both faculty and student body my appreciation of the spirit of solidar- ity, cooperation and constant devotion to the objectives of a cultural, Catholic education manifested in a course of study pursued by the present graduating class. The real test of the achivement of any in- stitution of education is to be found in the character of its graduates. The record of Cretin in its career of eight decades is to be read in the lives of the men who consecrated themselves to high duty at any cost in times of peace and war. VVithOut any hesitation I commend to the class of 1945 the appreciation of the Worthy alumni among Whom they now take their places to enhance the glory of Alma Mater through the fulfillment of the ideals and prin- ciples she has set before them. Very faithfully yours, Archbishop of Saint Paul. February 5, 1945. Everything around us was new: new teachers, new subjects, new methods. More quickly than we realized. were we to become acclimated to our strange surroundingsg for 1941 was a memorable year: America was basely attacked and we were plunged into the chaos of war. The succeeding years moved ahead with the impetus afforded by the world conflict. Day followed day with but one purpose in mind: we had to be pre- pared to take our places not only on the battle fields of today but also in the world of the future. CLASS CDFFICERS fflfl TES D . TTER SU Cui' preparation for this monumental task has been adequate. Wie have been trained in the fields necessary for the successful accomplishment of our duties. llve have the administration, the faculty. the military department to thank for the guidance and care given us during this all-important phase of our training. Our sincerest hope is that We shall be able to live up to the goal set for us by our advisers:-The best class ever to be graduated from Cretin. Under the patronage of hlary Immaculate We will go forward to achieve success in time and eternity. .LJLXIFQ r W V SiROAllBF aledlcgorian .RG Dfvxiitn P ,sq 4 r Sa1l,fOrfa5RFTr Page N1'1zetee1z 1 C I , - . y I 1 , ' , ,J ' V 'J Il' lg' ,ld VIA, S . . ,L x I I fr F' all I ' ' i ' VW gULIS AHMANN , cm 1d Lifuten it OHicer's Club. 5, N .A., '43, Track, '43, C. Barrows was assigned to Cretin High School in the spring of 1942. Soon after his assignment here, he was promoted from First Lieutenant, which rank he had held for some time as an ofhcer in the enlisted reserve. Captain Barrows received his degree as Bach- elor of Science from Coe College. He also attended Drake Lniversity and the Cniversity of Illinois. He received his LL.B. degree from Drake. The captain was an outstanding athlete all during his high school and college career, he was chosen lowa All State halfback during his junior and senior years in college, and was named to the all- time all-star team of Coe College. He also holds several track records, and during his running days. it was not unusual for him and his twin brother to win track meets almost alone. The Captain has been an inspiration to all the cadets. He exhibits a keen interest in every mem- ber of the corps, and, since he knows most of the cadets personally, he is better able to aid us in our work either as students, athletes, or cadet ofhcers. B1aster Sergeant Frank Esenther came to Cretin in the fall of 1930. He remained here senior ser- geant in the military department until 1942. when he was ordered to join the Railway 'llransportation Center. Alter a period ol overseas service, he re- turned to Cretin last fall as military instructor. Since he has been here, the school has not missed the Honoil School rating, and the rille team, which he has so ably coached, has made a remarkable record. Sgt. Esenther has taken a personal interest in every cadet and his sincere guidance will always be remembered. On June 10, 19-14, Sergeant Burt Olson was ap- pointed to the military stall of Cretin high school. Previous to his coming here, he had been stationed at various army camps throughout the Lnited States dating from the time of his enlistment into the army in July of 1942. During his tenure here. uSarge,', has made a host of friends and admirers. Sgt. Olson has never been too busy to help us when we needed aid. He assisted in the Christmas Program and everyone will remember his swing band which was really in the groove. 1111 gr: S1'xly-sezfwz IQEGIMENTAI. STAFF Lfff to riglzzf: -I. Strozubcrg, J. Kelly, J. Page Sixty-fzine The 1945 edition of Cretin's Crack Drill Platoon has been working long and hard to perfect its drills in order to be equal to or better than platoons of previous years, which have established such brilliant and en- viable records for themselves and for the school. Practicing every Monday, VVednesday, and Friday afternoons and Sunday mornings, in addition to eX- tensive drilling during holidays, the platoon under the excellent leadership of Jim Kelly has become a smooth, Well-functioning unit. Its first performance was made before a joint meeting of the Motherls and Dads' Clubs on January 10, here in the school auditorium. Successive exhibitions were given at the R.O.T.C. basketball game, Summit School, Visitation, CYC's pre-Lenten party, Nativity Parish Father-Son Dinner, St. Joe's, the Twilight Parade, the Annual Federal Inspection, and finally at the St. Paul Auditorium for Commencement. The Rifle Team became a smooth Working unit of sharpshooters under the excellent coaching of Sergeant Frank Esenther and Cadet Captain Blaine Barr. Several lettermen reported for the first practice in October. This aroused early hopes of a championship team, the team has fulfilled all expectations. It won first place honors in the Seventh Service Command match for the third consecutive year. By placing first in this match, they became eligible to fire in the National In- tercollegiate match in which teams from all over the United States were entered. They completed the firing of this match with a total of 7600 out of a possible 8000. Since 1931 the team has Won twelve Hearst trophies, captured in competition with high school, college and university teams, this season they have again added another plaque to their collection. They won second place in this event with a score of 909 out of a possible 1000. The team members can truly look back upon a season of brilliant performances which brought honor and distinction to the school, the school is justly proud of them. . The 1944 Raiders were coached by Mr. Schaefer and lXf1r. Patton to a record of 5 wins, 3 ties, and 1 defeat . . . In the Catholic Conference, the Raiders placed second . . . The team was made up of 22 seniors, 10 juniors, and 1 sophomore . . . The myth- ical all-state Catholic team contained 6 Cretin men. Those chosen to the highly prized position were backs Jim Vllanger and Dick Letven, and linemen Ken Mauer, Don Leyden, George Failes, and George Lulcoskie . . . George Janisch, All-State guard of the '43 season and captain of the '44 team, was benched with a broken arm, CRETIN I9 HARDING 6 The curtain went up on the Cretin football season at Central Stadium as the Raider Eleven beat the Harding team in a night game. Every type of Cretin attack rang the bell in the opener as Cretin's 3 scores came on a line buck by Dick Letven, an end run by Dan Hovey and the final, on a pass, Jim Vllanger to Don Leyden, who scored from the 15-yard line. CRETIN 26 ROCHESTER 0 Lourdes of Rochester was the second victim for Prof. Schaefer's men. The game was played under the lights in the Rochester stadium. The 26-0 scor- ing was accounted for by Jim Wvanger, who scored twice on beautiful runs. Dick Egan, on a pass from lvanger, and Dick Letyen, who bulled his way to the goal marker. The pass snatching of Don Leyden and the defensive play of Louis Lepsche, ,Tack Dufresne and George Failes was superb. CRETIN 6 The Blake game was the first rough spot in the Cretin road. The contest proved to be a see-saw affair, marked by vicious body-contact and clever ball handling. Again it was the famed Cretin passing combination of Wlanger to Leyden that turned the tide. lim Vliangerls pass of the third quarter found glue-lingered Don conspicuously by himself near the goal line, thus scoring the lone tally of the game. CRETIN 7 DE LA SALLE 7 ln the fourth football contest DeLaSalle came to St. Paul and tied the Raiders, 7-7. lt was a battle of linemen as neither backfield could seem to shake the oppositionfs defense. Letvenls off-tackle plunges were the only consistent ground gainers for the Raiders. BLAKE 0 CRETIN 30 ST. AGNES 0 St. Agnes was run thru, around, and over in the game that marked the half-way mark of the season. The subs started the game and handled themselves nobly. -lim O7B1'lCH, in his first year of Raider foot- ball and -lack Bergman, the lone sophomore repre- sentative on the team, each accounted for'12 points, and Ken Klarkwardt added another 6 to register a 30-O score. CRETIN I3 ST. PAUL AC'Y I3 The huddleless St. Paul Academy style of play baffled the Raiders as the Eleven made the poorest showing of the season in typing S. P. A. 13-13. An inspired Academy team held the Cretin ground at- tack to a standstill and the passing attack swung into action, Vllanger to Leyden made one score, and VVan- ger to Janisch set up the final and tying score on the S. P. A. 11 yard line, from which Wanger swept the end untouched. Letvenfs plunge for the extra point was good and the score was knotted. kllkl VVJXXGER Left Half .Xll-Conference KENNY xt,xt'ER ' 2 S Left Guard .Xll-Conference 'fRLiSTY LETYEN Fullback All-Conference IUUIBI-III CRETIN I3 ST. The game of the year, as always was high in competitive spirit and both teams outdid themselves. Both Wanger and Krowka starred as they passed their respective teams to the 13-I3 tie which resulted. CLOUD 7 In the last home appearance of the 1944 Cretin football team, the Raiders met and defeated St. Cloud Cathedral 14-7. The power playing of Dan Hovey and Dick Letven accounted for all the scor- ing. A blocked punt by George Lukoskie on the St. Cloud 10 yard line, and Cathedral's loss of the ball on Downs on their own Z0 yard line was a made-to-order situation for the Raider power attack. An intercepted Cathedral pass by Don Leyden in the closing minutes of the game killed the final St. Cloud tying attempt. Jim O'Brien, working in place of the injured Jim Wanger, Lepsche, lvlauer and Lukoskie all fulfilled their duties to perfection. CRETIN 7 ABERDEEN 20 In one of the longest trips ever to come to a Raider football team, twenty-five Cretin gridders journeyed into South Dakota to play the Aberdeen Central squad in a U. S. O. benefit game. Out- weighed and outplayed, but not out-fought was the team's feeling after being dropped 20-7 by the very expert Aberdeen aggregation. It was Dan Hovey's pass to substitute back Augie Donavan that registered for the raiders. With both Jim Wanger and jack Dufresne on the sidelines most of the time, the team was weakened considerably. The record which this team hung up will long be remembered as one of the greatest in the schoolls history. From the time of the Cretin close defeat in the finals of the 1944 State Catholic tournament, Mr. Schaefer had been looking forward to the past season with great hopes and anxiety. VVilson was put away with ease by the squad as Eggleston connected to start the Raiders on their high- scoring season. Quite a few weaknesses presented themselves as the team dropped the Redmen,' 32-24. Central was next to fall at the hands of the Raider Five. lylany of the mistakes of the initial start were over- come and the shooting of O'Brien and Leyden was exceptional. Wlashington fell in the third of the pre-Con- ference games to the tune of 37-19. A journey to Rochester resulted in a victory of 40-24 over the Lourdes five. With two successive games against Harding the Raiders advanced their record to live wins. Loyola of Mankato, the team that was to beat Cretin for the State Title at the tournament, suffered its iirst defeat when the Cretin squad beat them on their own floor by 10 points. On January 7th the Conference competition opened as the squad jaunted down to Cold Springs to play and beat St. Boniface. The second Conference game gave the Cretin boys their first real competition as they were matched against St. Thomas. It was the third quarter sharpshooting of O'Brien and- Leyden that pulled the squad up from behind at the quarter and half to tie at the final gun. An overtime periodqvxvas played and the ball-handling of the Raider five proved too much for the Tommies and the extra stanza ended with a Cretin victory. Us And again the Raiders defeated the Loyola quint in a Cretin home game, score 40-31. A win over St. Cloud Cathedral put the Raiders in the Conference lead, one game over second-slot St. Thomas. Almost before the din of the DeLaSalle game had receded, the tournament was opened at O'Shaughnessy Hall on March 9. In the first round Cretin was matched against St. Augustine of Austin and the subs played almost the entire game. Again the second squad was called on to give the first team a rest when St Cloud was played on the second day of the event. Every member of the team took part in the scoring as St. Cloud was dropped from play by a 66-33 score. The finals pitted Cretin against the team they had twice beaten in previous games, Loyola. Getting off to a bad start the Raiders found themselves in the hole throughout the title game. The tired squad found itself unable to find the basket on the set-up shots and had a tough time of it under the back boards. Thir- teen points by Leyden and 8 by Mauer were not enough to equal Korth and his 23 point play. The Raiders took the second place position for the 2nd straight year with a loss of 37 to 31. The squad played its heart out and were the first to congratulate the new Champion. On April 16th, the first game was held at Phalen against the johnson nine. Numerous errors booted the game for the Raiders as they dropped the opener by a score of 7-5. Rlechanic Arts was the next opponent for the Nine and the smooth pitching of Jim Daniels opened the door to victory with a neat Win of 5-2. Again Daniels was called on to throw against a very good and experienced VVilson squad. His pitching pulled the team out of many tight spots before Wilson was retired by 6-5. Although victories were few, in the eyes of Brother Gerard the season was a success because the experience gained was great, and augurs well for future years. In the City Meet Cretin led the field of ten teams and holds claim to the City Team title. Under the tutelage of Hockey Coach Brother Hilary, Don Omodt, goalie, Delaney and Tom Hurley, on defense, Gerner and Connolly at the wings, and Bill Langevin at center, took the ice as the 1944-45 edition of the Cretin hockey squad. The team played up and down hockey, being a smooth working aggregation on some occa- sions and losing to inferior teams in other instances. The squad beat teams from johnson, Breck, Shattuck, Harding, St. Thomas, and Nlonroe, and lost to St. Paul Academy, Blake, St. Cloud, and on return games with Johnson and Shattuck. The season record was 6 wins and 7 losses. Exceptional hockey was played by Connolly and Delaney, while the goal-tending ability of Don Omodt made him one of the top net tenders in the city. . ...rv y. . - . - 1 -f-f?.NVQ-55,-.wh .- .E if ' .. , i. Joe Krause, the president of the city-wide Junior Red Cross Council, has become nationally renowned for his invention, which speeds up blood donor contributions in the traveling caravans of the Red Cross. LEADERSHIP CLUB K The Leadership Club this year has seen about the most successful year in the annals of the organization here at Cretin High School. To start the year off, the Club took over the promotion of the sale of VVar Stamps and Bonds through- out the school, and most successfully, too. To date, approxi- mately twelve or thirteen field ambulances have been bought by the student body. The highly valued and much sought after Treasury Flag has been won and flies from our flag- pole, and a total of some forty thousand dollars worth of stamps and bonds has been sold through Cretin. The second project to be undertaken by the Leadership Club was the Community Chest Drive, in which it was again successful, soliciting one of the largest amounts of money of any school in the entire city. Suddenly We found the Holy Season of Lent at our door- step, and again it was the Leadership Club who desired to put on a program in which the entire student body could participate, and this was brought forth in the form of a Pre- Lenten Dance, Which, through the good spirit of Willingness of the members, was a huge success. Now the underclassmen members of the Club feel that they would like to make this HPARLIMENTARY LAW IN ACTION, dance an annual eventcon Cretin's calendar of activities, and we seniors want to wish them every possible bit of success with it in the future. Member- ship is restricted to 15 per cent of the senior class and 5 per cent of the junior class. Selections are made by the senior and junior advisers judging from the studentis four-year record. The nominees are then qualified successively by the Leadership Club and the Faculty Council. Final approbation rests with the Prin- cipal of Cretin High School, Brother john Berchmans. VVhen the results of this yearfs culling and weeding out were finally announced, it was found that nineteen seniors and eight juniors had successfully completed the judging. Five members of the present senior class, James Dech, Charles Kolars, Richard hfullins, James Stromberg, and Robert Vileber, were elected to the National Honor Society last year. Therefore they automatically became members of the society this year. The fact that they were chosen above the rest of their classmates to be members of the Cretin Chapter will be placed on the permanent record of the thirty-two cadets, and whenever anyone wants to examine the records in the ad- ministration oflice, it will be noted that these cadets stood over and above the rest of the school scholastically. APGSTLESHIP OF PRAYER Under the guidance of Brother Josephus, the Apostleship of Prayer took its place among the school's leading organizations. The whole year was marked by a quiet activity, which although it caused little ex- citement, achieved much. Early in the year, promoters were chosen from each advisory to be leaders in the advisory's spiritual activities. They attended monthly meetings, took care of the prayers and intentions marked by the students on the Apostleship calendars, and passed out the League leaflets. Later in the year they began putting out a little paper The Promoter which publicized their activities and assisted them in their work. All year long, Masses were offered for 1 retinites in the Armed Services. Nfemorable among the yearis activities was a iyfass held in the Cretin auditorium on December lst to commemorate the Centenary of the Apostleship of Prayer in the United States. Nearly every member of the student body received Holy Communion at the first Kfass to be offered at Cretin for many years. Among Cretin's charities were two programs sponsored by the Apostleship of Prayer, for the old people at the Little Sisters of the Poor. One program was givcn during the Christmas season and the other, on St. ,loseph's Day. iyfany of the cadets contributed their time and talent towards the success of these programs, members of the Band and Choristers, and quite a number of vaudeville performers. The diversity and caliber of the acts were especially pleasing to the audience and the performers were gratified at the looks of happi- ness on their audience,s faces as they left. Archbishop hlurray attended the St. Joseph's Day program and both he and the Little Sisters were very pleased with the evidence of Cretin's generous spirit. The Chapel is to bear the name of the holv founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, St. John Baptist De La Salle. Although the CRE'l'INI'l'E demanded so much of its editors, and was in no small way a constant headache during the entire thirteen months it was in the making, the editors hope that it fulfills the expectations of the entire school, without whose cooperation, the book could never have been completed. 0 1' Always a pleasure to the cadets are the days on which the COM- BIILXT is distributed. The first Cretin band would be dwarfed beside the present en- semble of almost ninety members, testi- mony to its steady growth and a sign of its vigorous life. Its services to the school have been many. Military parades, football and basketball games, assemblies have been enhanced by its spirited playing. The high praise be- stowed upon the band by people and oflicials of the city in being selected to play at rallies and parades, and above all in being chosen as the official V-E Day band for St. Paul has reflected in turn upon the school which it represents. The record attendances of appreciative audiences at the annual Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert-the twelfth in the band's history-proved gratifying to the hard-working members, and to their conductor, Mr. Frank N. Mayer. So excellent was this yearis spring performance, that recordings were made of almost all the selections. The band's greatest contri- bution, by far, has been in the bringing of music of traditional quality into the life of the school, to add some new element to the strange amalgam that goes into the characer of a real Cretinite.
