BARRI rr President Vi' -Presi'deri Secretary K Treasure: M, I SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On Sepiember I-l. l03l. we. the class of '35, timidly entered the portals of Cretin High School. where we were to spend the subsequent four years. furthering our education. Our want of confidence was bolstered by the presence of Brother Herbert. who welcomed the newcomers. and introjuced us to our curriculum. We recruits were then inaugurated in the seemingly mvs- terious maneuvers known as drill, in which we were ably instructed by the sergeants and the cadet oflicers. On October I2 we went under fire for the first time in the Columbus Day parade. in which the whole school participated, and we were commended for our good showing. Vile lent our aid to the drive for books that was carried on as Cretin's observance of National Book Week. and later most of us had our first experience with a retreat. while it was announced that John lirank was to be the cadet colonel. The year closed with the scholastic exhibit and the military show. The second lap was begun two days earlier than the preceding year, under the same general supervision. although several of the teachers who taught us during our first year, had gone. Here came the chance of a lifetime: an opportunity to balance the ledger by dominating the incoming freshmen. lt need not be said that this was well done. for no class fails to do its best in this capacity. At the beginning of this term, the class split into two divisions, as approxi- mately one-Hfth of us decided to pursue commercial studies, in the business course offered to the three upper classes. Before the Christmas holidays. there being no retreat. Robert lfaricy was appointed cadet colonel. Some time later a chapter of the National Rifle Association was formed under the supervision of Sergeant Frank Esenther. and William Baumhofer replaced the incumbent colonel. With the completion of the exhibit and an elaborate military show. we had finished the first half of our academic career. well prepared to assume the burdens of juniors. As school was resumed in September. 1033. an air of confidence was prevalent among us: we were juniors: we were stire that we could not possibly fail in anything that we attempted. Proudly we mounted the stairs to the second floor. where we were to find new fields to conquer. lt was now that members of our class began to take a prominent place in the athletics and other activities in and about school. A new handmaster was appointed. in the person of Mr. lirancis N. Mayer: the school was visited by the Apostolic Delegate to the United States: and our class was kept informed on matters of importance through otir own weekly paper. The Junior. Our colonel was Thomas Bohen. the annual play was a success, but sorrow was brought to our hearts near the close of the year. upon the death of Brother Herbert on May 15. I93-l, after an illness of five months. He had been the director at Cretin for four years. and had done much in behalf of the students. The exhibit was dispensed with. as the class of '35 closed its third year at Cretin. The following autumn we returned as seniors. to find that Brother Richard had taken over the directorship, and that Captain Russell was going to spend his sixth and last year at Cretin. After three weeks of preparation we assumed military leadership in the school in the capacity of cadet ofhcers and non-commissioned officers. This time the cadet colonel was to be chosen from among us. and Ralph Miegel was awarded this honor. Our final. and consequently. otir best. year at Cretin saw many improvements. notable among which were the enlargement of The Comment, the Friday afternoon assemblies, and the appointment of Brother John Berchmans as supervisor of classes. A precedent was established when Yhe senior book was substituted for the traditional yearbook. Our class provided the backbone for the athletic teams. and. although not all of us participated. we all backed the teams that carried the name of Cretin. XVe. the class of '35. graduated on June 3 with mingled emotions. and set sail on the tempestuous sea of life. well equipped. by the training that we had received at Cretin, to meet our new responsibilities. flbl FRANK XV.
