N X-X'-A 'K ' ml L Lf-uf'-' J ggfjggff f HISTORY OF THE CRETE PUBLIC SCHOOL After the old Crete school building had been destroyed by fire on June 11 1928 a special election was held to decide whether or not a new build ing should be constructed this xote resulted in a majorltv fax ormg a new building Immediatelv following thls ballot there was another election held for the purpose of securing a S65 000 bond issue with which the build ing cost was to be defrayed Although the cost of the building which con s1sted of 6 rooms both a bovs and girls washroom and a combination audi torium and gymnasium was S100 000 onlv a S65 000 bond issue was neces sary The remaining S35 000 came from the lnsurance which covered the old building and from surplus funds on hand at that time The building was dedicated on April 19 1929 Durlng the time of reconstruction of the building chool was held in the Village Park Hall and in the Town Hall The daily attendance of the eight grades in 1929 was 132 pupils The faculty at this time had only four members The present dailv attendance in the elementarv school is 234 pupils the present high school dailv attendance IS 136 pupils The facultv now consists of 15 teachers school were added to the elementary school In 1933 the portable building was bought and set up at a cost of S3 500 This building at that tlme was used as the library and study hall for the seventh and eighth grades and high school At the pr ent time the port able building is used for Vocational Arts In 1937 the thlrd vear of high school was added to the two vears already established Also in 1937 in order to accommodate the thlrd vear of high school a new addition was constructed on the east end of the elementarv school This was dedicated on November 18 1937 On May 11 1940 a proposed four vear community high school was voted upon and carried by a proportlon of better than 3 to 1 and the first high school board of directors was elected on June l 1940 They are Nelson E Helme president B S Stephens secretarv J Schulte D M Sumpter and W R Dedert members September 1940 inaugurated the first four year program for Crete Commumtv High School and to the potentlal graduating class of 1941 this book is dedicated The development of Crete s program of public education during the last decade has been l1ttle short of phenomenal and we can well be proud of the fact that it has so steadily kept pace with the rising need for expansion 7 .
