Opening their conference bookings, the Cardinal club after playing a putrid half, retired for the rest period with a ll point handicap. Returning for the second half with a bit 'of the old pep talk from their disgusted mentors, the Cards played smart ball, but lost a heartbreaker to a fast- breaking York club by the slim margin of 24-26, In a second consecutive conference fray, the Red- birds, after serious last half threats, hand-cuffed the Orangemen of Beatrice 22-20. Using their excessive height and experience 1 rj the Links won only after a strenuous battle causing 'QQ 3 much concern and worry to them and their loyal 24 Qi pilot, Ralph Beechner, I QQ J In a game contested on a floor reminiscent ofa X Q' cracker-box, the Cards barely slipped passed a 'G ,Q stubborn Hebron team, 18-16. Q4 if Losing their third conference encounter by less 5' CQ than a three point margin, the jinxed Cards bowed 5 23 to an inferior Hastings squad, 25-22. Because of 'l.' 1 1' this setback the Redbirds relinquished any possibik A Vw ity of any conference honors. ' v Q Playing one of their finest games in the season, 3 tg the Cardinals overwhelmed a classy Fremont bunch, ll . 58-29. The victory was especially significant 4 7? because Fremont went on to the state finals, where ,Q they lost to a heralded Scottsbluff aggregation. ' In their last game played on the local maples, ff the Cardinals concluded their scheduled games, by If whalloping a David City club, 57-18. Qf In the pairings of the district tournament tho I Cretans' first game was with Ashland. At the cut- Q5 set of this initial tournament fray the game was A fought on even terms, however,as the game went on, ,Z the Cards puked ahead to a 34-25 verdict.
