Somewhere between its covers you will find someone you know, a familiar place, and a mem- ory of something you have done. We hope, as you look at the story of Creston in 1956 as told in your SAGA, you will spend many happy hours in reverie - re-living parties, plays, athletic contests - but, most of all, remembering friends. Again, this is your book. You, the people - your clubs -your social life-your activities -we have tried to cover it all. :Y 31.44 of confenf, Qzaculiq . . 7-I6 Swarm . . V V leckcafion P What is more important -to any school than a good teacher who can also be a good friend to his students? Believing he combines the wisdom, the tolerance, and the love for learning necssary to a good fteacher with the sense of humor and the friendly manner essential for fostering friendships with young people, the Staff of the 1956 .SAGA wishes to dedicate its efforts to Mr. John A. Row-ell, teacher and friend. Mr. Rowell ca-me to Creston in 1954 as a teacher in the English department. He has made himself an important part of the school with his teachingg his work as adviser of the school newspaper, the ECHOg and his technical direction of many of the school's theatrical productions. Bu-t even more important to those of us who have become his friends, we have been influenced by his everfpresent desire to combine the spirit of truth with the spirit of fr-eedom. As Mr. Rowell leaves Creston we of the SAGA staff wish to express our feelings by quoting from Henry Adams: A teacher affects eternityg he can never tell where his influence stops. . C. Waters, new principal at Creston High School, looks up to welcome a student to his office. Transferred last fall from Burton Junior High School, Mr. Waters has already made himself an integral part of the school scene. Miss Dorothy H. Lawyer in her capacity as assistant principal does much of the detail work of administration of the school, but still finds time to welcome with a smile and a word of greeting all who come to her office. Mr. Russell L. Waters assumed the task of leading Creston's faculty and student body when he undertook his duties as principal this fall. He replaced Mr. Howard W. Wickett who was promoted to the position of Director of Secondary Schools of the City of Grand Rapids. Mr. Waters has worked with teachers and students to try to make Creston an even better place in which to go to school. One of his particular fields of interest is athletics, and he hopes to bring new spirit and life to the teams which represent our school. He is being ably assisted in the task of ad- ministration by Assistant Principal Dorothy H. Lawyer. In addition to many routine adminis- trative jobs, Miss Lawyer finds time to counsel Qalmfflgiellfa regarding both ffadsmigalgi personal problems. M Both Mr. Waters and Miss Lawyer are inter- ested in Crestonls students and in their activities and try to help them in every possible way as they proceed on their path to becoming mature and intelligent citizens -- first of Creston, then of Grand Rapids. 'I l Pupil Personnel Director Lowell McDougal is unfailing in his efforts to help Creston students adjust to the demands of school life. When Creston'sA doors were opened last fall, returning students noticed many chan-ges among the faculty members. We still welcome Mr. Wickett to our building on occasion, but his position as principal has been assumed by Mr. Waters. Other persons not returning to their familiar spots this year included Mr. VanKrimpen, Mr. Welch, Mr. Constant, Miss Rusch, Mr. Howland, and Mrs. Doerr. New teachers welcomed to the building were Miss Suzanne O'Neal, Mrs. Ruth Smith, Mr. Charles Chase, Mr. Harold Snyder, and Mr. Gene Blossom. To Mr. joe McGee, who also began teaching here last fall, September must have seemed like a Homecoming, for he was a popular Creston graduate of 1944. ,xrrszw--vm' im: W- M Mr. Orville Scoville's task at Creston is to assist in keeping attendance regular. To mention all the ways in which the faculty helps Creston students would be a virtual impos- sibilityg however, we' would like to mention the fact that practically every teacher in addition to teaching five hours every day assumes the respon- sibility for direction of at least one extracurricular activity. Coaches, conductors of musical groupsg dramatics, debate, and forensic directors, publica- tions advisers, sponsors of various clubs and or- ganizations, session room teachers-all these people give liberally of their time, talents, and energies to helping Creston students develop all facets of their character and abilities. 1 1 school office running efficiently but make friendly contact with students who desire information or help. These are the words used to describe the seniors who graduate on June 7 at Fountain Street Baptist Church. Our lives at Cresf ton may be ending, but new and more exciting ex' periences lie ahead. We will never forget, how' ever, the many activities we shared in here at Creston. As freshmen we really began our social life with the annual St. Pat's Prance. In the sophomore grade much time was spent preparing for our spring dance known as the Daisy Dip. As sophomores we had our first experience in electing class officers. Without hesitating we entered our junior year prepared to cope with anything. Our first activity was giving the annual Harvest Hopg this was folf lowed by the Junior Amateur'Hour and then the spectacuar United Nations junior Revue. Cer' tainly not to be forgotten was the JuniorfSenior Prom given in the Black and Silver Room at the Civic Auditorium. Now at last it was our turn-our turn to be looked up to as seniors. The year started as we elected the Homecoming Queen and her court. Deloris Kaboos and Tony Powell reigned as King and Queen at the Homecoming Dance, cofsponf sored by the Senior Class and the Alumni Associaf tion. Between semesters the Midfterm Mingle was given to raise money for our project. With the help of Nliss Thomasma and Miss Hoekstra, as well as the class adviser, Mr. Rens, we presented our senior play, Seven Sisters, which proved to be a big success. Dressfup Day, the annual banquet, and graduation night brought our senior year to a close. , Now we, the seniors of '56, are looking ahead- looking to the future. But we will never forget our four eventful years at Creston High School. Vice President Bonnie Schuhardt, Secretary Judy Thompson, Treasurer Tom Lannon, President John Gorman. Borrowing ideas from that most famous Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans, the juniors tried in their Revue this year to capture the wild, gay spirit that surf rounds everything at Mardi Gras time. In New Orleans the activities begin in Feb' ruary, but the Juniors began their planning and preparation in January. After the theme was selected, committees were set up and the first line dance rehearsals were called. As time and tempers grew shorter and evening rehearsals longer, a person found himself smiling hello to someone he had hardly known before the Revue. Juniors found themselves burning the midnight oil to keep up with their school work, staying after school to work out dance routines, and chasf ing all over town for stage propsg but if you asked them if they were tired, they didn't seem to hear you. They would only smile quietly and rush off for a costume fitting. The long weeks of preparation were over on March 23-the Juniors received their conf gratulations on a successful show-the Revue belonged to the past. Librarians teach English classes the use of 'the library facilities. Here we see an interested student using the card catalog. Q-'amifar pfacea af Krerifon Education consists in developing knowledges and skills, habits and attitudes, virtues and ideals to prepare people to live honorable and useful lives. Vufhen we look back at a school year, the things which we may remember first are the spectacular events-but the 'foundation of our educaf tion-and the foundation of our school lives-really lies in the classroom. Woodworking classes teach boys proper use of tools. They also have the 'opportunity to make many useful and attractive articles. , , Much attention is given to improvement of reading abilities. Here the tachistoscopeiis being used to help increase speed. 66 Training in office skills and procedures is the purpose of the Office Practice class Here the Dictaphone is being used. Vlhat makes up a school year? Certainly, the Senior Play, the Junior Revue, the Student Council Carnival-but these events, important as they may be, are secondary to the algebra, English, and biology classes attended by students when they can't find an excuse to get out. In picturing school activities we do not want to give all the attention to the frosting of school lifeg we want to present some scenes which are typical of class activity-scenes which are familiar to every Creston student every day of the school year. For these activities truly represent a school year. In the Print Shop boys learn basic operations of equipmentg-then they gain practical experience by printing programs, posters, and other materials used in presenting school activities. Maybe all persons in an art class. are not budding Rembrandfsg but the students develop an interest in creative activity and an appreciation of the works of genuine artists. Machine Shop provides interested boys with the opportunity to learn to operate drills, presses, and other types of machines. Geography classes prepare projects and display exhibits as they Future homemakers prepare for the time when they will study peoples of foreign lands. produce culinary delights for their own families. American Government classes give students opportunities to draxnatize the activities of the different branches of our government. Opportunities for learning the domestic arts are amply provided for in our home economics department. l Student Council officers show Miss Dor- othy Lawyer, assistant principal, the new Linden Memorial trophy. This trophy is to be awarded annually to a senior boy who has displayed in an outstanding way qualities of citizenship and service. X - Y may be Greek to some peopleg but to our mathematics students it's just an- other algebra problem. These words, the preamble of the Constitution for the Student Council serve as a guide to the group. Starting as a minor unit the Council has grown in stature until today it is recognized as the leading student governing body in the school. Each year since its organization in 1928 the Council has adopted a project to benefit the com- munity or school. Project for the year 1930: Through the efforts of the hardfworking Council the city 'street cars no longer pass by the corner of Oswald and Plainfield but come to a screeching halt to let teachers and students out one block closer to the school. This year's project was of a different nature, benefiting basketball fans-a new scoreboard for the gym. In the year 1931 the tradition of the Penny Carnival was begun. Now 25 years later students still vote for their choice for queen with pennies. Fifteen years ago the first exchange assembly took place through the efforts of the InterfHigh Council. Again this year Creston cofoperated with Ottawa in presenting a pep assembly. A pingfpong tourney took the spotlight in 1942. Not quite as eyefstraining as a pingfpong match were this year's pep assemblies guaranteed to strain your vocal chords, providing you had the right amount of spark and enthusiasm. ' Elections of officers are always exciting as candif dates fight right down to the wire for votes. The heated campaigning is climaxed by an assembly where managers praise the merits of their charges. This year's campaigning resulted with the election of John Ley, president, Chuck Unseld, vicefpresf identg Charlene Buckel, secretary, and Bill Anderf son, treasurer. fOfficers are pictured at left.J The duties of the officers are: 'LTO promote the general welfare of the school through an organizaf tion representing students and faculty. Bud Rice and Tom Axdorff-pair of rough linebackers. 114 lotta! Jihdfea Creston opened its 1955 campaign in an impressive fashion downing a good Holland team. The Polar Bears scored early by marching 65 yards in a sustained drive on the opening kickfoff. Holland scored before the end of the half by blocking a punt. In the third quarter Creston scored the winning touchdown on a plunge from the three. The Bears were beaten in their first City League game by the Indians from Ottawa Hills. It appeared to be a matter of over confidence. Although playing out of its class Cresf ton gave a good account of itself in hold' ing the powerful Catholic Central team to a 7fO score the first half. The second half proved too much Catholic Central power. Playing one of its better games of the season, Creston bounced back after two straight defeats to beat Muskegon Cath' olic. Both of Creston's touchdowns were scored by John De Blaay. Marred by penalties and mistakes Cresf ton suffered its third straight city loss from Union. Union led at the half 13f0. but Creston came back and almost pulled the game out of the fire. Roger Van Belkum's spectacular 60 yard touchdown run was nullified by a clipping penalty. Two very costly poor centers set the stage for South's winning margin. The work of Tom Axdorff and Dick Feutz was outstanding for the Bears. Central pounced on every Creston error and turned two fumbles into touchdowns, and a pass interception by Ernie Brazil was good for 90 yards and the final Cen' tral score. As for playing Muskegon Heights, one of the powerhouses of the state, it was just a question of too much speed and depth. It 'was strictly a team victory with John DeBlaay and Roger VanBelkum supply- ing the thrills against Grand Haven. De Blaay's scoring of 19 points placed him second to AllfState Denny Cook in the City League race. Dick Feutz was elected by his team' mates as the most valuable player for the Creston Polar Bears of 1955. Buck Ash and Tom DeBoer -two tough tackles. .lim Bienel' - rugged senior center. Coaches Don Black, Joe McGee, ' f and Bob johnson. Z?afsLei6a! The Bears began their '55956 season in style by downing Alma f59f43j. The first game with Chris' tian was played extremely well, but Creston came out on the small end of the score, 62f6O, in a double overtime, Mr. Johnson stated that if the boys had taken this contest the season probably would have had a much different outcome. An' other factor which had a strong bearing on the final results of the season was the number of inf juries to several of the Bears' key players. Bill Anderson, Jack VanBlooys, and Don Seekel had sprained anklesg and Jerry Brunsink had a strained knee. However, the Polar Bears seemed to hit their stride in the Regionals. First, they whipped Musk' egon Catholicg then they edged out Christian in a thrillerg and finally were beaten by the number one team in the state, Muskegon Heights in one of the best garnes.of the season. The Heights then went on to capture the Class A crown. Although the record shows only four victories, i-Aiea the team actually played better ball than this. The Polar Bears were defeated in their first Ottawa game, 84f71g but those 71 points by our boys tied Creston's high point mark for one game. The Polar Bears were quite well balanced this season. Tom Lannon, senior, and Ray Wollney, junior, were the team's top scorers during City League play. Tom was honored by being placed on the AllfCity Second Team. John Svechs was noted for his standout defensive play, as were Don Seek' ell, Dave Paasche, Bill Anderson, and a few of the other players. Mr. Johnson is very optimistic about the com' ing cage season. Returning are Seekell, Wollney, Paasche, and Van Blooys, who will probably form the nucleus of the team, along with several under' classmen brought up during the past year from the second squad. We may not have had the best basketball team in the city, but Creston's students were always there cheering their team on. 119 Captain Bill Anderson John Svechs Don Seekell Ray Wolhxey Jerry Brunsink Jim Page Dave Annis 1 2 0 John Ripmaster Tom Lannon Bill Anderson Jack VanBlooys Dave Paasche Dave McCr0ry 121 ll FIRST ROW: Dave Annis, Fred Challa, Jim Page, Tom Davidson, Al Ryers.
