We are proud to present to you the 1953 edition of the Saga. As you read it you will recall much of the work and play you have experienced in the past year. The Saga staff sincerely hopes you will enjoy these recollections even more as the years go by. Many years ago, an earlier generation of Creston pupils selected the polar bear as one of the school's emblems. This year's staff decided to feature polar bears in the Saga. The pictures of polar bears were taken on a vaca- tion trip to the Brookfield zoo, near Chicago. SENIOR SECTION . .. 5-25 ORGANIZATIGNS . . 'l . . The Polar Bears Dedicate The Saga Staff, according to a time honored tradition, each year chooses to honor some person whose guidance and counsel have greatly contributed to the welfare of the school. XVe have chosen the assistant ad- viser of the Saga this year for this honor because she has been a helpful friend and counsellor to so many Cres- tonites. She has given hours of her own time to her pupils, and was al- ways available when a student needed help. As assistant adviser of the Saga and its editors she has contributed many hours help to this activity. In addition to her work on the Saga Staff, she was chosen because of the active part she has played in junior Revues as well as for her enthusiastic leader- ship in her classes in typing and short- hand. So now we, in turn, inscribe to her the time and effort which her pupils put into this book. To you, Miss Lally, the Polar Bears and the Saga Staff proudly dedicate the 1953 Saga. They are: David Houk, Presidentg Norma Sier- veld, Vice Presidentg Laurel Paasche, Secretaryg and Bill Blandford, Treas- urer. One of the first projects of the season was the Harvest Hop, the an- nual Fall dance. A great variety of talent was demonstrated in the Junior Amateur Hour, with Jayne Foote and Mike jackson as Mistress and Master of Ceremonies. The biggest success of the year was the Junior Revue. The theme of the Revue was Alice in Wonderland, and the leading part was played by Delores De Jong. The last annual activity sponsored by the Jun- ior Class was the Junior-Senior Prom. With the combined efforts of Mr. Van Wingen and the entire class a happy and successful year was completed. ,W , , V , , 4 f 'Q D ,mr ,Q Z K JW, ga, ,. lr ey a ' ' A rt Bettie K om it Lker Barnes Beals Benes Butler M L , A r, , Iarl Nancy Ann Dolores John Betty gerland Long Markoski Nyeholt Oliver B3 Thompson 5 fi ir I 'rf B fr as F . . up F K I lk K urelia U C TCS A 21' CS Fred Margaret Afton Ammon Anderson Anderson Anderson y , 6 l 3 A i xl i 1 oof ' QQ ' l C John Marlene Anna Mae CH I lrglrjla Barr Batson Berg Beerthuis Bien ,, an Q' WM A S Y ' rrre if r Q i l e , will J- it -JMA 'hyllis Barbara Ed Madge B Don Bont Bont Bosman Bouwelf Owefmafl lrll C 9 f it 573 S g i B Q .i ' , V J xl L , 6 f I ward Norman, Donna 015 AE C118 uifum Buhr Byl Byl Bylsma ,.'5iJ ig' i 1 S6 A E xg, A n I ,ff A B a t N 'S B Eirien Rgnal ra ' 5 ooley Corstange Danhgf Davis Deatherage 7 4, - ry uvg' ' -,rw vll is J' '7 Betty Susan Shirley Dells Dent Gaubas I2th grade Dyanne Pembroek t S P21111 Marilyn San y Webster Woolpert Yokom I lth grade ut :UA Mary H ' utli: Anderson Annis Avery i S N ng' 5 ,l'Z '. They got oft to a shabby start by losing to Central and Christian. Then they won four straight to enter the second round of competition with a 4 and Z record when they again lost to Central. Four straight victories again put the liears in contention only to lose it share of the title to South in the hnal City League contest. They downed Ottawa for the third consecutive time in the Regionals at Kalamazoo. The Bears then, contrarygto pre-tour- nament predictions, upset a highly favored Benton Harbor quintet. Creston lost the chance to enter thc state tournament, when they lost to Holland after defeating lilenton Harbor. The success of the Creston Bears depended partly on the inexperi- enced newcomers. Carrying most of the weight were returning veterans: Art Beals, Larry Crow, Lew Mahacek, Bob XVynalda, jack Neve, Dave Houlc. Two returning lettermen, captain Bob Crow and pole vaulter Ken Felix, were out play at the plate Lefty early because of injuries.
