An initiation party at the home of jackie Van Hattum topped off a day of horror for the new members. Selling postcards, sponsoring dances, doughnut sales and a dance after the Creston-Central game provided revenue for the year. As a special project for the club, all the members attended the Red Cross Center every Tuesday night to roll bandages. The girls provided mirrors for the girls' gym, furnished the lovely Christmas tree for the front hall, donated books to St. johns orphan- age, and provided the Christmas showcase display on the second floor. The play junior Miss was attended by the club. A progressive dinner was held at the homes of the following: Bonnie Warber, Ginny Dayton, Esther Carlyon, Bette Culver, joan Marquardt, Pat Impens, Ruth Vanderjagt, and Esther Ritzl-ri. Pins were ordered this year for the first time in the club's history. lnitiating a new idea, the Ami- citia Club gave a reception for the mid-year graduates and their parents and friends. The girls served many things this year for the Needle-work Guild. Mrs. joe Romdema's group made a fomplete layette. The separate groups enjoyed spreads and attended week-end Camp at Camp Keewano. The most important and time- consuming of their activities was serving as aids in the hospitals. All the girls give two or three hours a week in the hospitals of Grand Rapids. They carry messages, pre- pare laundry, hx trays, arrange flowers, and in general, help the overworked hospital staffs. Every memher of Mrs. Gerald Chapin's group gives her time regularly. The three groups from Creston are under the sponsorship of Mrs. Romdema, Mrs. Chapin. and Mrs. Louis Gouzwaard. ir Row I: S. Anderson. I.. VamlerBout, M. Davey. IS. Chapin, M. l.. Pettit. Row 2: M. Playing their first season under the tutelage of Gil Powers, the Creston football team didn't win a city championship, but they did make history twice. They compiled the best won- lost average in the history of the school, and also placed every regular on at least honorable mention on the city's honor teams. The Polar Bears began the season with four veterans, Joe McGee, Stew johnson, Cal Miller, and Dick Smith, around whom the team was moulded. Coming into the Union game the underdogs, the Bears tliumped the Redbirds, 13-O. In the sec- ond game, we were downed by South 6-O, but then bounced back to take Holland 14-12 in the last minute of play. In the next three games the bears were also victorious, downing Ottawa 12-O, Central 24-O, and Tech 13-0. In the final game of the season, the championship game with Catholic, the Bears displayed a fiashy brand of football, After leading 13-7 in the first half, the Bears were dropped 28-13 by virtue of a last half drive sparkled by Bob Vandenberg of Catholic. Creston placed four men of the All-City teams: Captain joe McGee, jack Moroski, Dick Smith, and Wes Miller. joe made the all-city first team for the second consecutive year. He shared the place of captain with Catholic Central's Bob Vandenberg. To top off the season, the team gave Gil Powers a trophy by which to remember his first year at Creston. The trophy is a gold figure shown kicking off. Baaketddl Playing almost the entire season with a team of juniors, the Creston basketball team of '43-'44 made themselves feared in the city circles. Witll two returning lettermen from last year's team, they lost the first four straight games. After completing the first seven games, the Bears had won two and lost five. In the second round, they were hampered by injuries in the first two games, but then went wild and won the next four out of five games, their loss be- ing a two-point heart-breaker to Ottawa, The highlight of the season came when the Bears upset the city champion Chris- tian five, 24-20, Creston being the only team to do so during the entire season. A great help to the team will be the new idea of three practice games before starting the regular season. In their first practice game, the Bears dropped a 6-I verdict to the Central nine. Misplays were numerous, but a beam of light was the live hit pitching of Ray Flanders. In the second game they bounced back to upset the Union Red Hawks 2-0. Again the pitching looked good as Gord Aldering pitched four-hit ball, and not a misplay was committed by his team mates. ln the third game they stopped Davis Tech 7-4 at john Ball. a catch. This was quite true at Creston, as forty hard-driving tracksters an- swered the call of the cinderpath this year. With a heavy seven-meet schedule confronting them the thinclads went to work running on Kent Country Club before the track was ready. To mold a winning track unit from the returning men of last year's city championship team was the challenge confronting Martin Van Wingen. Supplementing the three lettermen, Captain Burt Brown, joe Mc Gee, and Lee Meyers, was a promis- ing hunch of aspiring youngsters. Promise of things to come was evident in the performances of G. Corn- wall and G. Slocum in the dashes, T. McGee and C. Buyze, in the quarter mileg T. Kerjes in the hurdles, and R. Todd in the half-mile. Li. ll ll Presenting a cup to Gil Powers for his first great year at Creston as football coach, having roller-skating parties at Ramona, and putting on noon dances were among the many diversified activi- ties of the CU Club this year. One of the main works of the club was to tackle the job of bringing the athletic pictures outside the gymnasium up to date. The pictures are one of the foremost attractions of Creston, because they show the growth of our athletic teams from the small class B teams to our strong teams of today. Mr. Wickett thought it should be the Club's job to do it, and as the Saga goes to press, the work is in the planning stage. Informal intiation was held at school with the athletes wearing as part of their clothes, something to represent the sport they won their letter in. Besides this, the initiates had to scrub the front steps with tooth brushes, and many other things. Formal initiation was held at the All- Sports banquet. Officers of the club are Wes Miller, presidentg Dick Gibson, vice-presidentg Dick Smith, secretary-treasurerg and joe McGee, seargeant-at-arms. Below. Club, which is under the competent direction of Miss Frances Kilstrom, have now been awarded with their letters, numerals, and all-city honors for their efforts put forth during the years of 19-13 and 1944. These get- to-gethers have been instrumental in help- ing the girls know each other better and have instilled a finer comradship, which is always found in clean sportsmanship and fair competition. As for the fall sports program, field- ball held the greatest interest, In mid- winter sports, volleyball took the limelight. Eight ambitious teams competed with each other, each team having stiff oppo- sition. Following, as individual sports, were speedy games of badminton, and pin-spilling games of bowling, while soft- ball was the spring attraction. These girls are all very proud of their awards, especially the all-city girls who have been members of the club for three years. Letters, Row I: j. Livingston, S. Anderson, M. Langler. C. Albers, K.
